“Great location for CBD and getting out to the burbs”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 21 February 2009

Stayed here for 4 nights to visit family and was happy with the value for money received.

Citylife provided us with everything we needed, without paying for the extras of a 5 star hotel. It is centrally positioned but is very private, quiet and gives you the ability to cook and catch up on the washing!

We were located on level 5 at the back (looking over a steeply terraced garden) in an Executive 1 bedroom and it was great to stay somewhere that was peaceful - no traffic noise. If you are looking for great views, this is not the hotel for you.

The location was great for us - Citylife is directly behind the entrance to the Motorway (not that you realised this as there was no traffic noise). It was so convenient for visits north of the city. Highly recommend that if you visit Wellington & get a car, that you do a trip up the west coast to Paraparaumu and beyond (such picturesque coastal scenes).

Very good access to the CBD & the waterfront and the hotel is really close to the Cable Car (everyone who visits should go on this!). Although it was a good 10 minute walk to get up to Cuba St and Courtney Place, which is the restaurant precinct (and the only part of town that seems to be alive at night).

Having researched, we knew that the entrance was at the 'back' of the Hotel (not on Lambton Quay, although there is access to the lifts from here). The entry is at the very end of a back street, on Level 6 of the building. Small but satisfactory and the staff were friendly.

There was parking available (which we used) but be aware that whilst there is parking at the hotel, there are only about 8 spots - so you will have to use the the public Wilson Parking up the road. It isn't too bad, but it is quite steep getting to & from the hotel to the car park.

The interior of our room was so spacious! Massive room, LCD television and DVD player with Sky Cable as well as a full dining table, oven/microwave and a washer/drier. The bedroom is a separate room, however there was no direct air-conditioning so we had to leave the door to the living area open. Not too pleasant when this was discovered, but wasn't a big deal once we opened the door.

Be aware that the general fittings are a little bit dated. The lifts are not new, the building itself feels a little bit '60s, but the interior of the room is very modern.

Would definitely stay here again!

Hard decision this one - what to rate, could have so easily been a 5/5 but it wasnt to be.

The best point of the Citylife is its CBD location - it is right in the middle - easy access to pretty much anything worth seeing, as well as a plentitude of shops, cafes, supermarkets - even BK and Mcdonalds for those cheap breakfasts - so thumbs up for this.

The hotel is all a bit backwards in terms of layout - its actually strange - what other hotel can you name where the lobby of the hotel is on the 6th floor but you still enter on the ground floor - so that's all a bit weird - the 7th floor has no lift access which is the top floor for rooms - which again is a little odd. The lobby itself is forgettable and small as is the breakfast area - but there is little reason to use it with so many other local options .

No Matter - I was on the 2nd floor in a room facing Lambton Quay - the room was BIG for 1 - clearly an upgrade of sorts - a 2 bedroom apartment - which 1 room with a double bed - the other with 2 singles a good sized lounge with dining room, a good sized kitchen - the double bed room had an ensuite with a toilet attached. The main other bathroom - had a shower over bath and proportionally was pretty small and crammed - the laundry is also in there - the layout is a bit odd with a heated metal towel rail - actually down the side of the toilet ( about 10cm away) - this is incredibly hot - i mean like burning - and if you touch it with bare skin whilst using the facilities - you actually get a light burn - its also incredibly easy to do - so poor design.

The rest of the place is pretty nice - the furniture is all pretty modern - there is a big lcd with many channels in the lounge area - and a smaller one in the main bedroom - the bed in the main bedroom was reasonably comfortably but overly so in a worn sort of way.

None of this is a big issue and all passable - what really pushed back the rating was a combo of in my opinion the worst things - Heat/Noise - there is no air conditioning or ventilation - only the windows which open - so it gets incredibly stuffy in the room - you could open the window - but you wont - as the road outside is at its narrowest point and the point where every bus in the city passes on a 1-2 minute basis so its incredibly noisy - (seriously i looked out the window at a high point and saw 5 buses outside on each side lined up below my window ) - very hard to sleep - the windows are semi sound proofed but not no where near enough - so sleeping was all a bit tough and after all you stay in a hotel as a place to sleep - and here its all a bit tough - only now i realize i should have moved to the other rooms but never thought of it and a small single bed isnt overly appealing either. .

So all in all - location is good, staff friendly - but noise and heat let the place down - they could put in aircon and double glaze and it would be a great option in the city but until then - Intercontinental would be a better option.

  • Liked — Location - Nice and Central
  • Disliked — Noise from Road - No Airconditioning - Lifts a bit dogdy

4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2008

I stayed at Citylife Wellington for 4 nights in August 2008 on a business trip. I enjoyed my stay and would recommed Citylife if you want apartment accomodation.

The location is excellent, right in the middle of the city. The staff were friendly and helpful.

My first floor suite had 2 bedrooms, one with a double (queen?) bed and the other with 2 singles. The main bedroom had an LCD TV and en-suite toilet. The apartment also had a washing machine, clothes dryer, dishwasher, kitchen appliances and utensils, fridge, freezer, toaster, microwave, broadband (at a cost), DVD player, and large LCD TV in the lounge area.

The apartment was very clean. The lounge and dining areas were comfortable and spacious, however the bathroom was cramped.

My first floor room was a bit noisy, with an aircon unit outside my window. The windows looked out onto a brick wall and there was little natural light. I would assume that higher floor rooms would be better.

The gym has minimal equipment, as if often the case. I think they install just enough to tick the "yes we have a gym" box.

I enjoyed Wellington in my few days there. The people seemed friendly. The city is vibrant but without the mad rush of many cities. It is easy to get around on foot, and while it rains a lot there is plenty of shelter along the footpaths. The highlight of my stay was taking the cable car (very close to Citylife) and then walking through the botanic gardens, highly recommended if you enjoy nature.

There are many places to eat in Wellington, particularly around Cuba Mall. I was impressed to see plenty of people eating out on weeknights. You can get groceries at the Star Mart just around the corner, or walk down to New World on Willis St for a bigger range and cheaper prices.

Citylife is good for longer term stays or travelling with a family. It doesn't have the glitz and shared facilities of a hotel, but is great if you want a bit of room and kitchen, washing facilities, etc in a central location.

  • Liked — Clean, great location
  • Disliked — My room was a bit noisy

I was really impressed both by the centrality of the location (with lift access down to Lambton Quay, the main shopping street) and the spaciousness of the accommodation. The view was poor- with a lot of light blocked by the drive into the hotel- but my friends, in a two bedroom suite overlooked the Quay so it is the luck of the draw. The room was well-equipped with plasma screens, good washing/ drying facilities and plenty of cooking utensils. It was possible to order room service at breakfast or dinner time and we were able to order a baby sitter at very short notice. My friends had a breakfast-included tarif but I didn't for some reason. Stil, it was not too expensive and there was plenty of food on offer. There were videos to rent at reception and internet access for a smallish fee. I would recommend this to anyone wanting to 'regroup'- do your ironing, get some good sleep and save some money by doing your own cooking.

I had reserved a 1-bedroom suite that got upgraded to a 2-bedroom (they probably ran out of 1BRs), but that was fine with us. Desk staff was very nice, and the room decor was very modern and sleek, with recessed lighting, a large dining table and a big flat-screen TV with DVD player (bring your own movies). And we definitely loved having a full kitchen with a dishwasher and a clothes washer and dryer! The one real complaint we had was that the mattress in the first bedroom was way too soft, possibly from age -- when we slept in it we felt like we were falling into the centre of the bed, which was rather uncomfortable. The mattress in the 2nd BR was a bit better, but still didn't feel firm enough and we had to hug the edges to feel like we were sleeping on a level. Other than that, I wish there had been a tub (it only had a large, walk-in shower), and there was no view to speak of from the 1st floor, but the location was great (right near the cable car and 10 minutes' walk from Cuba Street and Courtenay Place), so overall we enjoyed our stay there.

  • Liked — Full suites with kitchen and living room; location in CBD
  • Disliked — Old mattresses too soft

We stayed in the Citylife Wellington with my sister and brother-in-law, in a two bedroom apartment. The hotel is very conveniently located in downtown Welllington, and the apartment was modern and comfortable. However, the layout of the apartment was not well suited for two couples. The second bedroom had an interior window looking out at the dining room, with inadequate ventilation--it was cool enough only with the door open and a borrowed fan blowing air in. The master bedroom had its own toilet, but we all shared the shower in the main bathroom, which also contained the washer and dryer. Although the living area was large, the bedrooms had almost no room to open suitcases. The apartment might be better suited for a family, although both bedrooms had queen beds, no singles. The staff at reception were very friendly and helpful. After we left, our credit card was charged for an item from the minibar that we had not used--the amount was credited back as soon as we notified the hotel. In the end, we were satisfied with our stay, but would probably spend more for two separate rooms the next time.

  • Liked — The location.
  • Disliked — The layout of the apartment.
