“Tasteful & Cosy”

I stayed in 2 rooms over 2 nights at the Shepherds Arms. I was pleasantly surprised when shown to my room upon arrival. Had a four poster bed with a large leather sofa, sideboard with a mirror, copper plumbing which had the most amazing water pressure. For a large room, it was very warm and the spa bath was a treat on the cold wind. I extended my stay, the room had been previously booked and so I was shifted to Rm 11, which was in the main building, towards the back of the Hotel. A bit smaller, I found this room to be nice and cozy, floor was a bit creaky and then I noticed how the traffic noise was missing. I noted that housekeeping changed my towels ea day, which was nice. I never bumped into any other patrons throughout my stay. It surely was a treasure and though I didn't partake in the restaurant, having the bar there was handy. Location was handy to CBD, straight down Bowen Street to Parliament, The Terrace or Lambton Quay. Would recommend this Hotel for the romantics, or the leisure travelers travelling the country. Old english, tasteful & cosy.

Room Tip: Carpark is free however, parking away from the building will ensure that your car does not get bomba...

Popped in for a meal one (quiet) afternoon, but guess this place will get stowed out on the right nights. Prompt and good, friendly service. A nice menu with a wide choice of food. I had the chicken parcels that were great and my girlfriend chicken in a fruit sauce. However, the meals came with a salad that was sadly clearly from 'out of a bag', the addition of some tomato and other bits would have easily sorted that. A wee bit pricey, but would recommend for a visit and we will use again.

The shepherds arms is NOT your run of the mill motel/hotel. The theme of yester-year is very well done; from the old fashion switches, to the leather couch, to the 4 poster bed. We found this very special. Location is great. Sure there is a little bit of road noise but having a spa bath makes all the drama and noise feel so far away. The Hotel is attached to the Speights Ale House which is busy especially on quiz nights, they offer delicious kiwi pub food and they will always find a park for the Hotel guests. A great time and happy to stay again.

Room Tip: try the speights ale for dinner one night

This was a walk back in time. I love History and this place had it all. The rooms were delightfully decorated in keeping with the era of the pub. It was winter and the rooms were warm and inviting. The staff were great and the Meals were Tops. Highly recommend this. Excellent value for Money.

Room Tip: Room 6 aws Lovely. I would stay there again.

I am saddened to say that this place is the worst accommodation we have ever stayed at and we stay all over the place. I choose this Hotel after a couple of long nights checking appropriate places with a spa. This place stood out from the rest with the so-called King Poster Bed (Queen Stick Bed) and the Double Spa so I booked and paid for it.

We arrived late and unpacked and had a cuppa while we caught up with some computer work. It was at this stage that we noticed the blacken ripped curtains. These were dirty from old age and fell to pieces in our hands, these curtains were in strips. We were tired and decided to overlook this and went to the restaurant to order a meal and eat in our rooms. The lamb shanks were tangy and everything was microwaved, this cost approximately $56-$58. We left the place at 9.30pm to go into town to order food again and did not return until midnight. It was at this time that we thought a hot spa before we go to bed would be nice as this was the reason we had chosen this place.

The bathroom was disgusting, the jets had blacky brown slime in them and around the nozels. I have never seen anything like this ever before. We checked the rest of the bathroom and the toilet and handbasin were dirty, dust everywhere even dust on the hairdryer, honestly guys REALLY BAD. My partner shot down to the petrol station to bought Janola and Spray and Wipe and he cleaned the bath/spa blasting the jets with a janola bath, cleaning the jets with a toothbrush til 2am in the morning just so that we could have a shower before we left in the morning.
Morning came and we left. I made contact with the Manager and Owner complaining about the filth and off lamb shanks and I was nice about it and was seeking some compensation for cleaning their bath. They have not responded back to me and have not offered any form of refund. This night cost us over $200 accommodation and food.
Oh I am sure when they read this that they will have some excuse or heaven forbid it might even be our fault that the room was dirty. Finally a response ay from them. End of the day it had blacky brown slime in the jets of the spa and off food and they don't care about their guests, take my money and run....

Room Tip: Check the bathrooms first...if clean then stay!!

This was our second time staying in this historic hotel in a picturesque old part of Wellington; it is located within walking distance of major attractions such as the Te PaPa Museum, waterfront, cable car, and is adjacent to the Speight's Ale House which we also enjoyed very much for dinner. The staff is friendly, the rooms are clean. Perhaps our second stay was inspired by an overly fond memory of an exceptionally friendly and helpful staff member from our first visit.

This hotel has a great history and has been maintained to resemble its original appearance and perhaps decor (with the exception of an amusing series of portraits depicting cartoonish sheep dressed as noblemen). Some rooms are more spacious and better appointed than others - we had a tiny room with a bathroom that seems to have been made out of an old closet -- so prospective customers should review the offerings to be sure the room selected will be adequate.

Travelers should be aware that as with many old hotels, this place does have some other drawbacks. For example, during our first stay we DID have internet access, an amenity which has since been discontinued, much to our chagrin. We assumed this would be available for us this time around, and were inconvenienced by its absence, particularly since such access is unreliable in smaller areas of the country. In a busy cosmopolitan city, internet access has truly become an important feature, and its absence is quite an oversight.

The hotel is on a busy street and there seems to be a bump in the road which adds a not-so-lovely double Ka-chunk sound to passing cars; in essence, street noise may interfere with a sound night's sleep. Lack of modern ventilation also makes the room temperatures uncomfortable at times. Lastly, there is no good breakfast service; though our rooms were supplied with small boxes of cereal, refrigerated milk , a couple small cartons of yogurt and tea and coffee, the pub itself is closed for breakfast, as are nearby cafes. We had to walk into the main part of town to find a place we could have a real breakfast.

The hotel is certainly adequate, and charming in its own way, but may not be for everyone. On the plus side, we found it impeccably clean and the dining to be lovely as before. We also appreciated the hotel's having its own little parking area.

Stayed 2 nights at the Shepherds Arms as part of our stay on North Island. Picked this property as recommended in the Rough Guide to new Zealand.
Accomodation was a good size and clean. The bathroom was small but functional. The decor is as you would expect of an older pub and essentially charming.
We found the staff to be charming and always helpful.
Car parking is available at the hotel.
From this location you can walk easily to most of the sights in Wellington and it is very close to the botanical gardens and parliament.
We can recommend the food in the bar too!
