The Wellesley walks both sides of the line between charming and tired, but definitely has a unique atmosphere. Our Classic Double room had fabulous high ceilings, plenty of floor space and storage, and a classy modern bathroom, although the queen bed and general room appointment could use updating, and the pillows were not to my liking. The public areas (lobby, hallways, etc.) are classic 1920s gentlemen's club, but also a bit odd and deserted feeling, like being at Hogwarts during Holidays when everyone has gone home but you. We were provided a pass for 50MB of free internet (beware, this lasts about 20 minutes!) and told where to park ($20 for 24 hours) around the corner. The location is on a fairly quiet side street (although we did hear noises from above), about a 20 minute walk from the main dining/attraction district (Cuba St., Te Papa, et al). No complaints, but no great laurels either.

This hotel was a former gentleman's club, and very little has been changed. The signage is all there, and the rooms are labeled with their former inhabitants' names. There is a working old-fashioned elevator. The stairway still has giant pieces of taxidermy and lots of framed old prints. The atmosphere the place creates is excellent.

However, with that old-fashioned charm comes a lack of modern updates you have to be prepared to accept. The bathrooms were the best part of the room--really huge with enormous tubs and lovely Molton & Brown toiletries, fluffy white towels, etc. The bedroom, however, felt a bit shabby, but it all suited the atmosphere, and it was comfortable. The space was a bit stuffy, but we opened the windows and that took care of the issue. We found the wifi to be acceptable.

The location was very central and convenient in many ways, right by the cable car stop, not far from Parliament and government buildings. It was definitely a bit of a government/business district, though, and in hindsight given our preferences it would have made more sense to be in the Cuba Street or Te Aro areas. But we walked over to Cuba Street each day in 20-30 minutes, which was fine. In fact, we really walked all around, so clearly the location was very central.

Overall we would recommend this hotel. It felt like good value and we were charmed by the old-timey atmosphere.

We arrived from Australia late at night , it was raining and we were so pleasantly surprised to be warmly greeted and shown to a delightful , quaint and very comfortable room. This hotel has very big comfortable rooms, comfy beds and a lovely claw foot bath in the bathroom.
Central in location , the hotel is near the ferry terminal and in a beautiful old building which has been well maintained.

Room Tip: Ask for one of the rooms with a claw foot bath

What a pleasant alternative to the standard hotels of today. This hotel has kept its old world charm but with all the modern conveniences.Good location for exploring Wellington and was able to park the car overnight for free on the street just outside the hotel. We were upgraded which was also appreciated.Costwise it was competetive for our booking but due diligence is always the word.

Located in an old gentleman's club in downtown Wellington this boutique hotel is lovely if you are looking for something centrally located (it is very close to the train station) which has more style than your standard modern hotel.
The service at the reception was very high standard and personalised. it was extremely quiet in the hotel when we were there, which was possibly because there were few guests as it was the Easter weekend but it is also tucked around a corner off a main road. rooms and bathrooms are beautiful. a little more expensive than a cookie cutter hotel but well worth it. I'd certainly recommend it if you are looking to treat yourself.

While the hotel was nice, and I must say the front reception staff excellent, both at check-in and when we had an issue with the TV, we did find it not quite as impressive as the website photos and descriptions.
We had booked a deluxe room, but both felt that the price did not justify the quality of what we received.
Location was good being in the central city but we would likely seek alternative options if we had the need to stay overnight in Wellington again

We stayed in a deluxe room and enjoyed the lovely period ambiance of the room with enormously high ceilings. While there was an edge of tiredness about the place, I accepted that as part of the challenge of managing a heritage building (particularly one with so few rooms). The location is excellent. We would stay again.
