Had 3 nights here in Oct 2012, and no complaints at all. Handy to everything in the CBD so just walked everywhere. Backpackers rooms available, too, but separate to the hotel side. Totally recommend the Cambridge Hotel to all :-)

We stayed here for a long weekend in Wellington. It is an amazing old building - the first time we'd ever been in a lift with a cage that you pull across the door (like in the movies). It was really good price-wise, cheap as chips. The room was very small, with it's own very small ensuite shower - which suited us just fine. We were travelling with others, so would have benefitted from an area to sit down, so we ended up going out more than we might have done. All round a good cheap place to stay - clean and tidy with lots of character. I would avoid on a Friday or Saturday due to being above a pub (a lot of noise until 3am one night). It is also a backpackers, I believe for an even cheaper bargain. Beds very comfortable.

Everything about the accommodation was good - room & service. Unfortunately the same cannot be said about the 'day' bar staff who we felt didn't even want to be there and had that same attitude towards our group! Very poor service and the worst I've ever experienced even to the point where we had to had to wipe down our own tables with a dirty cloth that the bar staff came over with! The bar staff had no uniform and actually blended in with customers! We ordered breakfast which took forever to cook even though we were the only customers and they had the essentials under a baine marie. The scrambled eggs had a lot of liquid and seemed as though it had been cooked in water - never eating their eggs again. The only thing this pub going for it is the 'night' bar staff who were a pleasure to deal with and also the accommodation staff!

Hi, We really appreciate your feed back. Could you please advise us via our email address info@cambridgehotel.co.nz which day this took place in our bar as we would like the chance to fix this problem. We are very sorry for your unpleasant experience. We are glad you found our accommodation and our night bar staff good. Thanks again for your feedback.

This place was recommended to us by the manager at Howards Lodge in Tongariro (also a great place, see my review). It is a backpackers/pub style stay. Would not recommend it for families with children because of the 24-hour hubbub. Our stay was quite comfortable. We had a queen en-suite with an attached bathroom. Bathroom is small but sufficient. Our room was up a few floors but looked out onto a side street. This is potentially noisy due to the infamous Wellington wind. We didn't notice traffic noise. The whole building is very old and historical but we appreciated that aspect. Pub attached has great breakfast food for very cheap. Laundry room available but you may have to wait during the busy season. Very close to Te Papa and walking distance from other attractions.

We stayed at this hostel/hotel on two seperate occasions, and we loved it both times! It is close to Courteney Place, supermarket and Te Papa. We were well taken care of and even though we booked in to a dorm we got a double room for the same price. The second time we stayed we got a discount, just because we had stayed before. The rooms are warm and cosy, and the beds soft. Bathrooms are clean and there are plenty of showers. The kitchen might be a bit small, and it's a bit annoying that it closes at midnight. Someone else mentioned here that there are no plates or cutlery, but you pay a deposit for it at reception, which you get back when you return everything.

I never had a problem with noise staying here, and I've stayed on all floors on every day of the week. The pub next door offers cheap beer and a fantastic breaky for only $2!

Stay here!

We stayed in the hostel Section in a mixed dorm Of 8 for only 20 bucks a night. When we arrived we found we had been put with 6 men who were still in bed at 2pm and were so messy! We complained and asked to be put in a dorm with girls and the lady on reception was kind and understaning and put us in a 4 bed girls dorm at no extra cost! We also liked the pub which was cosy but far away enough not to be noisy, you can get eggs on toast for 2 bucks! Brilliant! Only thing we didn't like is the combined kitchen and tv/sofa area which is too noisy at night to relax in so we went out every night :)
