This is a great beach to visit and my kids go there on a school picnic every second year and also enjoy the summer pool (open Labour Weekend in October to Easter) and the playground. There's plenty of trees for shelter too as it gets very hot at times in summer.

Eastbourne is about 30 minutes drive around the coastline from Wellington. The drive itself is lovely as there are great views of the harbour and coastline. Eastbourne and also the nearby Days Bay, has a lovely relaxing sea side feel and yet it is so close to the buzzing capital. At Eastbourne there is a lovely walk along the sea front that is flat, tar-sealed and much of it pedestrianised. Its a great place to stroll, cycle, take the children or your dog if on a leash. The beach is swimable, fishable and is also very natural with plantings of NZ grasses and flax in places and also clusters of the red flowering pohutukawa tree which looks exquisite over the Christmas and New year period. At the northern end is a swimming pool, picnic/sports area and nearby in the little shopping centre you can get good coffee, gelato or icecream plus quite a few lovely antique/second hand, craft and art shops and galleries. It as great place to relax without having to drive a long way to "get away". From Eastbourne you can go on a walking or cycling trail to the Pencarrow head, where there is a historic lighthouse.

Township, jetty and beach make Eastbourne a tempting getaway experience. An enticing destination, so totally unlike its English namesake! Despite a similar beach frontage, Wellington's "Eastbourne" is literally "a breath of fresh air", approached by a panoramic drive around the neighbouring "Eastern Bays". Special mention must also be made of nearby "Day's Bay" with its safe beach, jetty, amateur fishermen, ferry visits to Somes- Matiu Island, the historic Pavilion in Jubilee Park with its scenic Walks.

I had to be in Wellington for a conference - but staying in Eastbourne made it a much better experience than being in a boring Wellington Hotel room. We did have stunning weather - and the ferry trip to the city every day was great (although a bit of a pain to get home late at night). The local pub was an added bonus - so friendly and good old fashioned pub grub. Definitely look at this as an alternative to staying in Wellington

My walking route - Days Bay Homestay to the village, a different experience almost every day. The sand and gravel on this beach alternate with different winds & tides, providing very big changes in both environment and surface. It is sometimes sandy enough to use my Blokart or walk in bare feet, othertimes a bit stony. High tide or stoney is the time to walk on the dunes located behind the beach protected by the dunes from wind, but drenched in sun. It is very hard to think I am within 20 minutes of the city and no more than 500 meters from home by the time I reach the wharf. My favourite walk - just to get the groceries - tough but necessary.
2013 summer has seen very large crowds on Eastbourne beach, with parking at a premium and queues of cars for up to 2 km when it comes time to go home.
This beach is safe and easy, although sometimes a bit cool for swimming. Excellent snorkelling at the north end rocky point.
