“Nice but not Exceptional”
Reviewed 15 September 2011

I stayed at the Bolton recently and I was really looking forward to it as I had heard so many good things.

The room I stayed in (a one bedroom room with seperate lounge) was exceptionally clean and very well appointed. They had a choice of hard and soft pillows and the linen was exceptional. The toilletries were very nice and the bathrooms large and spotless. The shower was excellent with superb shower pressure. I couldn't seem to get the television in the lounge area working no matter what I tried but I'm quite prepared to put that down to 'user error'.

The room itself was on the South side of the building facing towards the hill and was very dark - this was probably exagerated with the deep stained wooden decor. As a result, the room felt quite enclosed. I imagine those rooms facing North would be much nicer in terms of outlook and light. You cannot open the windows for air and have to rely on air conditioning which is never my preference.

I ordered room service on one occassion. The room service person was excellent and very attentive. I ordered the fillet steak. The food was average I would have to say. The steak was tough and unappetising although the presentation was fine.

The reception staff didn't really seem to welcome me - it seemed more like processing another guest. The Lobby area is very small and difficult to find a spare table for a business discussion. There are only two lifts in this building so be prepared to wait.

The location of the Hotel for business is excellent, situated just off the Terrace and near Parliament. It is close to Westpac Stadium which would be great if you were visiting for a sporting fixture. However, if you are visiting Wellington for leisure, I would prefer to be closer to the theatre and restaurant area of Cortenay Place on the other side of town. For this reason, I always think that the Copthorne in Oriental Bay is ideal. It has the added benefit of balconies attached to all the room for a little indoor-outdoor flow.

Don't get me wrong - it is a nice hotel, just not exceptional, and it does tend to be pricey.

Room Tip: The rooms on the North side of the building would be perferable. Rooms facing South lack natural lig...

We stayed here on a combined business/family get-away. The hotel is located within walking distance to shopping, Beehive and Botanical Gardens. We had a lovely room overlooking the gardens. The rooms are quite spacious, with internet, kitchenette, laundry facilities in-room and a decent-sized bathroom (but no bathtub). We loved the "Chewbacca" blankets on each bed-- we cuddled in them while watching TV and lounging around the room. The concierge staff was very helpful, giving us advice on where to find something to eat late at night, and arranging for a car to drive us to the airport. This is a clean, modern, sleek hotel, and a good buy for your money.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view of the Botanical Gardens

We treated ourselves after 10 days of camping and hiking around south island.

It was one of the nicest hotels we've stayed in. (That said - the price was still the same as an average Aussie establishment.) We had a huge one bedroom apartment with a large luxurious bathroom.

We had the winter warmer package for two nights - included a tappas platter, breakfast, late checkout.

The staff were friendly and professional, the breakfast terrific and we slept soundly. I also enjoyed doing laps in the heated pool in the mornings (although it was small and with three of us in there it was a tight squeeze).

Appreciated free use of a computer to check a few things online before heading home.

We stayed for two nights in a one bedroom suite during Wellington on a Plate Food Celebration. We were very impressed & found our suite to be spotlessly clean, very well appointed & equipped with absolutely everything, in fact it is more an apartment than a hotel. Even as a couple it is great to have a seperate lounge & the kitchen was equipped with everything with used items replenished daily.
The floor to ceiling windows span the entire outside wall of both the bedroom & lounge giving great light & fabulous views over Bolton Gardens. We arrived around noon & were given immediate access to our room. It is easy walking distance to the centre of town & we appreciated the complimentary umbrellas available during a spell of rain.
The buffet breakfast is well set out in different areas of the restaurant thus avoiding a build up of guests in one area. A very nice touch to the buffet not found in many hotels is that our toast was made fresh from good quality bread (may have been Vogels) & brought to our table in a toast rack.
The brioche cafe/bar in lobby area is relaxed & inviting & we enjoyed dinner one night at the Bisque Restaurant on mezzanine floor. This restaurant was a finalist in the Cuisine Magazine Restaurant of the Year competition.
Complimentary internet in the lobby is a further extra, just nice to check emails at the end of the day.
We highly recommend this hotel & know that we will be back whenever Wellington beckons again

My boyfriend and I stayed in for 3 nights at the Bolton Hotel in August 2011. We booked the winter warmer package deal online with wotif. This package (which includes an upgrade and breakfast) is only for the weekends, but we wanted to stay 3 nights, so we phoned the hotel and asked if we could have the same deal for the third night also. The staff were good about letting us have the same cheaper rate and upgrade for the third night (excluding breakfast) and we were happy with this.
We arrived early morning in wellington and were tired so asked if we could check in early. Melissa at the reception was very helpful and said she could get us into a room at 12pm instead of 3pm, but it would be another upgrade to a premium suite. We were offered this at a discount price of $30 extra per night, so took the deal.
Positive side:
- On seeing the gorgeous suite with comfy bed and luxurious bathroom we were so excited! Everything was clean, even the art on the wall was tasteful. We had a spotlessly clean kitchen, washing machine/dryer, comfy lounge, good sky channels, tv in lounge and another in bedroom. Nice bathroom amenities, free fast wifi internet.
- staff were well trained, friendly, and professional.
- We appreciated the voucher for free tappas plate for each of the 3 days. The staff at the cafe were excellent and always made sure that we got a special vegetarian tappas.
- The pool was very good, though a little narrow, but we often had it to ourselves anyway, so we were able to swim laps. The spa was hot and the gym looked good too.
- Breakfast was wonderful - excellent chef! Eggs, museli, tomatoes cooked to perfection. (I would have liked some baked beans too though as I am vegetarian.)
- very pretty view of the gardens from our suite windows.
- useful location about 1 min walk to parliament and 10-15min walking distance to the other main attractions, such as Te Papa, and the cable car to the gardens.
- Bolton seems to be a popular location for those associated with the government to stay, as it is so close to the Bee Hive, but there were also those on holiday like ourselves.
- Bolton is a newer hotel and possibly the best hotel in Wellington.
Negative Side:
However, the hotel has a big noisy problem! The first night we slept well, but were woken up around 8am to a horrible loud banging noise. At first we thought it was the guests above us banging around in the bathroom and were surprised how loud they were, but we dismissed it and went to breakfast; however, the next night just as we were going to bed the noise returned - really loud bang, bang, bang all night long! We thought it must be a severe problem with the piping or something. We even noticed a dent form in the corner of the bedroom ceiling (on the side near the window where most of the noise was coming from) and by morning the dent had gone back in again - very strange! The noise was so bad that My boyfriend slept on the couch all night, and I woke up four or five times. A couple of times I thought the window side of the ceiling was going to cave in. The room even shook a little like small chch earthquake aftershocks.
We were so tired that we missed breakfast (having been told that it went to 11am on check in) but not that it was only till 10am on weekdays; however, I explained the miscommunication to the staff and asked if we could have the breakfast for our last day instead, which they agreed to.
We also mentioned our noisy problem in room 703 and after waiting over an hour they finally sent a maintenance man. He told us he thought it was a design fault with the building and something to do with the structure when windy. He quickly arranged for another room. We got the feeling that this is a known problem amoung the staff though they imply otherwise. It was very rainy, windy weather during our stay in Wellington.
The next suite was directly above 2 floors up. It was less noisy, and not frightening, but still had enough noise that my boyfriend spent another 2-3 hrs that night on the couch. The noise seemed to come from near the waldrobe this time and whip around the room periodically, but was more bearable and I was able to sleep at least.
- The only downside to the hotel's otherwise good location is that the restaurants and cafes are half an hr walk away, and the only shopping centre New World Metro is 20 min walk and expensive, but they have great bakery there.
*Despite the aweful noise we did enjoy our stay due to the other many positives. I would recommend the hotel, but insist on a quiet room/suite and avoid suite 703!
* I also recommend the Indian restaurant on Cuba Street - excellent food!

Room Tip: Avoid suites 703 and 903 if you value your sleep! Insist on a quiet room at check in.

Right in the heart of Wellington so handy to get anywhere in the city. Our car was taken off our hands the moment we arrived & was delivered back to us within minutes on our departure day. Fantastic service by staff who could not do enough to help with advice etc. Room was spacious & had everything we needed. Great place to stay & would have no issues recommending it.
