Owner description: The highlight to any visit to Wellington is a trip on Wellington Cable Car. In just 5 minutes you will reach the top of the Botanic Garden where panoramic views of the city and harbour are the reward. You can also visit the Space Place Observatory here. Before you head back down make sure to visit the Cable Car Museum (free entry), which provides a history of the city's symbolic mode of transport and see the original cars and winding machinery on display. There are walking tracks that start at the top of the Cable Car if you're keen on a stroll back to the city. The Cable Cars leave every 10 minutes.

The ride up the cable car is short but enjoyable. The walk up is also relatively easy. There are a few things up the top to do apart from the view. Take the time to walk around the botanic gardens because they are beautiful.

We took the cable car up to get a view of the city upon arrival in Wellington while on a cruise about 8:00am. Lovely view even though there was construction work being done at the top. Fellow cruise members that went up later in the day complained of long lines, but since we were there early there was no wait.

The ride up on the cable car was an experience. It is in tunnels most of the time but you get the odd glimpse at the two stops on the way up. Prices are very low so well worth the trip. At the top there is a museum, craft shop and cafe, then a bit further down the Carter Observatory. Just brilliant, we were lucky it was a fine day.

Bring your camera for the great views from the top and try to leave yourself 35 extra minutes so you have time to walk back down and enjoy the area.

We'd been told by everyone to go up the Cable Car in Wellington. It took us ages to find the entrance. We were walking around the streets of Wellington saying 'where on earth do you catch it from?!' When we finally found it, we paid the fare (which for such a short ride is kind of a rip off....) and jumped on the cable car. You almost feel like you're taking up space because most of the others on the cable car are students or workers trying to get up the hill. When we went up there was a lot of construction as well, plus there are numerous tunnels the car goes through so it can be a little difficult to really take in the view. It's worthwhile though. The view from the top is nice, and the gardens seemed to be nice too.
