“Windy, rugged, dramatic hilltop views”
Reviewed 8 October 2013

The easy to follow path is Accessed from Khandallah park which is sheltered and surrounded by bush - in the summer the swimming pool is open and that's a great way to finish off a climb up Mt Kaukau. The path winds through bush, at times beside a beautiful stream, then as you get higher the bush turns to scrub. There are fabulous views over Wellington as you climb upwards, then up the top you can see all the hills that surround Wellington and fabulous 360degree views

“Views of Wellington and the Coast”
Reviewed 4 October 2013

Reasonable level of fitness required, and definitely good walking shoes and clothing. Lovely walk through the bush up to amazing views over the harbour and coast line. Can't beat the view from up here on a nice day!

“Fantastic Views”
Reviewed 1 September 2013

Need to be reasonably fit for the walk as some parts are very steep. There are various ways to get to the summit which are all well marked. The best route is going from the Khandallah swimming pool as you walk through some good native bush before you get above the treeline. The walk takes anywhere from 35 minutes to an hour depending on the level of fitness. Fantastic views of Wellington. Just make sure you go on a calm day as the wind at the summit can be very strong as there is no cover up there.

“Go on a calm day!”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

360 degree views to die for, from Mount Taranaki to South Island to Ruapehu, but you must be fit and you must go on a calm day. Any wind at the bottom is multiplied by 6 at the top.

“a great view, a good stretch of the legs”
Reviewed 30 July 2013

as a simple walk, its fine. the tracks are well marked, its safe, there are alternative routes from different access points. its usually windy but of course it is, its above the treeline. the basic walk can be connected with longer routes along other bush/ tree ridges. its nice to be able to do something simple so close to the city without any frills and without too many hordes of people ticking off their set of wellington attractions.
why not rate it more highly - i love the full bush of the wairarapa near to wellington, this is most scrub and farmland.
