“Pack a picnic and head for the hills”

It's been many years since I trekked up to Mt KauKau, but I'm writing a review anyway, as I regularly used to pack a lunch and head up for a walk on my own, with the family, friends or with our family dog.

Visiting recently with my husband, I so wanted to take him up there, but we were strapped for time. Next time, for sure!

If you love bush walking, and love great views (who doesn't?) then this is a must. Put your bush walking gear on, good shoes, pack some food and drink (you don't have to, but it is lovely to sit and have a picnic when you've reached the top, and take in the views over a sandwich and a thermos cup of tea). It takes about 2-3 hours if you want to take your time. 1-2 if you're in it for the fitness challenge.

The walk had options of moderate or difficult tracks. The moderate one had some track and some steps with various places to stop and catch your breath while looking out over Wellington city and harbour.
At the top ( which takes about 45 mins) is a seating area and a plaque pointing out various points of interest including the harbour, city, Makara wind farm and the South Island which could be seen.
We came down the more challenging route which was still quite accessible if a little slippery given recent rain.
This is a trek well worth the exercise. The views are simply stunning of Wellington in all its glory.

After a coffee and cake at the cafe at the btm, we were primed for the steep bush track leading up to the barren grassy hilltop where the view of Wellington harbour to the south are astounding.we sat and ate our picnic lunch near the top, in a sheltered spot where the wind din't blow our hair in our faces! you need to be a bit fit and at least 6 years old, really.Or 60 plus!

I did the Mount Kaukau and Northern Walkway trek as part of the same tramp with the Wellington Tramping Club. This was classified as an easy-medium tramp starting at Simla Crescent Railway Station. We immediately started on an uphill track all the way up to the top of mount Kaukau. Plenty of short rests along the way but this was a good quality track and I think the easy-medium rating was spot on. You need a reasonable level of fitness. It was a very blowy day so we had to wear our wind proof gear as we came out from the more sheltered track to the top of Mount Kaukau and at times the wind was so strong we had to brace ourselves against it to stop from getting blown over. The views were stunning even though the weather was questionable, as the wind blew the clouds across the sky at speed so the view would be covered and would then clear a few seconds later. We carried on to complete the Northern Walkway ending up in the Botanic Gardens. I think it took around 3-4 hours and I was pretty tired by the end but it was well worth the effort.

Take the picturesque but modern Johnsonville trains to Raroa Station and climb Kaukau. Accessible to the slow, but steep enough to appeal to the fit for a quick run.
