My wife and I stayed here during a visit from Canada in Dec 2012 in Room 1603. We found it to be a very nice and stylish hotel with a great view.

Our room was a bit smallish but comfortable with light kitchen amenities. Cook top, microwave & mini fridge with some tea/coffee provided. Very clean and modern. The bed was very confortable and it was nice to have a balcony to step out onto to take in the view. It was also quite quiet despite heavy traffic below.

It would have been a nice amenity to have had free Wifi, which was not included in our stay. It is pretty much the norm to have free Wifi in North America and it seems very nickel-dimey to charge for it at a place like this.

It was nicely located a block off the waterfront where it is a short walk to a nice variety of restaurants. Also, the Te Papa Museum was only about a 10 minute walk and was in view of the room. We spent a whole day at this most interesting & free museum.

All in all, it was a very nice place in a good location and we would likely stay here again, but we would be more inclined to if there was free Wifi.

Room Tip: Rooms on higher floors have balconies with a nice harbour view, on the water side.

Thanks for your review all the way from Canada, hope you enjoyed what some people would describe New Zealand as ‘a pint size version of Canada’. Our rooms do offer great facilities, the wifi charges here at the hotel are competitive to rates throughout Wellington. Our location is fantastic, hope to see you when you visit our beautiful country again.

We arrived in a wet Wellington after a 10 hour train journey and walked to the Rydges Hotel feeling a bit sorry for ourselves. The mood soon changed as we got to our excellent corner room on the 10th Floor - spacious, comfortable bed, powerful shower, good toiletries etc - with views over the city, bay and mountains. It was too wet to go out so we decided to do what we normally try to avoid - eat in the hotel restaurant. The meal was very good indeed, however, probably the best that I had during 4 weeks in New Zealand. Breakfasts were also very good and we both enjoyed our stay very much.

Room Tip: Higher floor corner rooms have the best views.

Hi there, well, you chose the perfect hotel for your train trip from Auckland where we are located just around the corner from the Wellington station. You are not the only one to mention our great corner rooms, they are definitely spacious accommodation rooms. Great to hear of your restaurant experience at Portlander, and funny that you should mention you usually avoid hotel restaurants. That is what we have set out to achieve, and by the looks have done so with your review being the best you had during your visit to beautiful New Zealand. I hope you enjoyed the rest of your time here in NZ.

Great views and a very handy location to shops and city. Room size was good and had all the goodies in the bathroom. staff were helpful and friendly . The buffet breakfast was very good fresh food and very quick service. The king size bed was very comfortable and the linen was soft and smooth, would love to stay next time in Wellington.

We stayed here for a week in a spacious corner room. If you have to stay in a hotel room for a week, this is as good as any. Rydges Hotel is located in the business district, not as central for shops and pubs as other chains, but close to the harbour and with many amenities only a 10 min. walk away. There is also a handy supermarket in the nearby railway station.
With one exception, Reception staff were friendly and helpful, and the young waiting staff in the restaurant cheerful and efficient, though the breakfast chef who abandoned my eggs to go and chat to a friend, then took his eye of the replacements and served them up like rocks needs a wake-up call.
The price-point for this hotel is pitched above the value chains. The decor is cutting-edge, the restaurant trendy, with prices to match. But housekeeping could be sharpened up if Rydges is to hold its place in the pecking order. The hotel does, however, offer a priority booking system, which is free to join, with a variety of excellent offers throughout the year. If you are looking for something a little more special than a budget hotel room, booking direct with the hotel offers great value packages.

Room Tip: The 06 rooms on the corner are spacious and have city views + side view of the harbour. High floors...

Hi! Those corner rooms are perfect, offering all the space you need and abundant natural light. Thanks for the feedback on our staff, have passed your comments on about the egg incident and the need to sharpen up our housekeeping. It’s definitely worth it to join our PriorityGuest loyalty program to ensure you get our very best deals. Come back soon for another special stay with us.

We stayed here for one night before moving on to the South Island. The location was excellent for shops, bars, restaurants and for the interislander ferry, but the service was dreadful. First of all we were left to struggle with our bags as we unloaded the car outside the hotel, then the girl on reception was not only offhand, but downright rude!

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to give us your feedback, definitely agree with you on our central location. Disappointing to read of your interactions with staff at the hotel, I have passed on your comments to the Rooms Division Manager for follow up action as this experience is unheard of at Rydges Wellington.

My friend and I stayed in Rydges in August last year coming from a hiking trip in Taranaki. It was our first time in Wellington. Staff were very helpful. Hotel location is near waterfront, museum, cable car, parliament, and pubs. Would love to go back again there in the future.

Our first visit since September last year.
From the minute we arrived everything was superb, check in was a friendly experience, the room was clean & tidy with superb harbour views. Dinner was a sheer delight helped in no small way by Ivan who attended to our requirements unobtrusively with friendly suggestions that only added to our dining pleasure.
We were there for the Cliff Richard concert (which was great) and we headed swiftly back to the hotel for after show 'drinkies' and this is where things started to fall apart. After being advised that it was 'last orders' I could hardly believe my ears so ordered a double round. We watched as many others were turned away without being served before finally someone must have put the 'hard word' on the staff and eventually got a drink - unbelievable!!!!!
Next morning we went for a morning coffee which arrived with both saucers full of coffee, was this replaced, no, so rather than ruin our clothes we left them and I went over to pay for our stay mentioning that our coffee was spilled and therefor unusable thinking they might take it of the bill but that did not happen. A small gesture would have made all the difference and we went to The Intercontinental for coffee instead!

Room Tip: Harbour view room is very relaxing

Thanks for taking the time to write us your feedback. Firstly I would like to say that I am glad you enjoyed your dinner here at the newly opened Portlander Bar & Grill and yes Ivan is one of the best we have and I will pass on your comments to him. I would also like to take the time to apologise for the service issues both after the concert and at breakfast the following morning. We pride ourselves on our service levels and unfortunately we have let ourselves down badly this time around, the Portlander breakfast is one of best in Wellington and should have been a highlight to end your stay again unfortunately this was not the case. I really do hope that we get the chance to show you what we can do on your next trip down to Wellington.
