This hotel has an excellent location .with all the main attractions are in walking distance. The room was very comfortable and clean.Well appointed and a good size.
Reception staff were very helpful and polite.
Didn't use the hotel to eat and drink. In part because the choice in the city was so good.iThe cost of things including breakfast was not readily displayed. This I found irritating.
Use the Quayside .Great bars and cafés.Try the Crabshack and Shed 5 restaurant. Both great .
We loved the Botanical Gardens and the original parliament .Amazing wooden building and you can just walk in.For the literary Katherine Mansfields birthplace is interesting..
For a drink try the Old St Paul's Thistle Pub. Dates 1840 and serves decent beer. Not a feature of NZ.
Wellington was our favourite N Z city when it's not windy !

My wife and I payed $279/night for an executive room at the Ridges for 3 nights, for that amount of money I was expecting to find as the word suggests an executive room but we were so disappointed to find that the room had only the linen and bath room accessories changed. The carpet had not been vacuumed in the lounge and hall way, the toaster still had crumbs in it and more then likely they are still there. Also the wine glasses had finger marks on them and the mirror in the bed room and the stereo system had marks on them as well. The walls had not been cleaned and are severely marked as is the dinning table. Sadly it must only be the view that commands an exorbitant price in this economic climate. To top it off a guy does not knock but enters the room to check the contents of the fridge.

On a good note the restaurant and bar staff were great, as was our meals

Room Tip: when you book make sure that you stipulate the sea view......

Stayed for just 1 night of luxury but wish we could have stayed longer. Took a 1 night package which included film and passes but did find cheaper through a booking agent - after we had booked through the Rydges priority of course, although being a priority member you do get food and drink discounts and late check out so I suppose it balances out. Great room, comfortable bed and having a choice of pillows was wonderful, loads to watch on tv and the added advantage of a kitchenette (not all Rydges have this). Valet parking turned out to be a great idea as parking is expensive. Ate in the restaurant and really wish we hadn't - slightly overpriced and we waited almost 55 mins for our main course. If the hurricane hadn't been passing over we'd have gone elsewhere.

Excellent room with wonderful view of the Wellington waterfront. Very good value for money Valentine's evening supper. The staff coped really well when the whole hotel had to be evacuated at 4 am due to a false alarm caused by an irresponsible guest

Couldn't fault our stay, from the moment we stepped inside the hotel the service was very good. Our room was on the 14th floor facing out to the Harbour so we enjoyed taking in the view. Our room was large and well laid out. Bit of a quirky idea to have a frosted glass window between the bathroom and bedroom so we pulled down the blind and that worked well. Nice little kitchenette with basics for a cuppa or glasses for wine and water. Bed was very comfy so I slept wonderfully. Had intended to have a swim and a spa but just spent more time than we had expected exploring the outer regions of Wellingrton so will save that for next time. We breakfasted late on Sunday morning with many of the other hotel guests and I would recommend that the hotel tweak their breakfast layout and service just a little to improve a few things, I realise it was busy but the staff were a little slow restocking plates and cups and we did have to ask for butter and there were a few gaps in the buffet when food ran out. All in all a great two nights away in the capital city. The location was great for us we walked from our daughters flat in Mt Cook across town to Featherstone street and it was safe and easy to do. Seemed to be a good amount of parking around the hotel when we needed to park nearby. Shops, parliament buildings, petrol station across the road for those little things you might need anytime of the day or night, Sunday we strolled from the hotel down along the waterfront to Oriental Bay lots of sights and a great market - vibrant and with the warm late summer sun shining across the harbour it topped off our lovely weekend away. This is a good hotel and I would recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view towards the harbour!

Our travel agent booked us into a 'superior' room - you could have fooled me and if this was superior I would have hated to be given a standard one. We found the room quite small and it was difficult to stow away our two (not terribly large) suitcases. The 'view' (despite all those lovely photos in the brochure was of the offices across the way. If you held your head at an angle you could just about see the parliament buildings. The bed was OK once we had got the pillows sorted. There was a redundant microwave and hob (did this make it superior I wonder?). The air con was noisy and the windows failed to block out much light probably because the curtains were of some strange and rather tacky pink net. Despite the fact we were quite high up there was a great deal of street noise. The staff appeared young, inexperienced and ill informed - all our queries were met with 'I don't really know'. I know that Rydges have quite a reputation in Australasia so perhaps we were just unlucky but it was a poor introduction to North Island.
