We started the day by going up the Hooker Valley Track and was so impressed. Tasman, by comparison, is rather ugly, gray, and colorless all around. The famous icebergs were few and very small. I know I'm in the minority, but I was so unimpressed by this.

We didn’t get to see the west coast of NZ due to time restrictions so this was our only introduction to a glacier. We took the helicopter flight over the tasman glacier. The heli tookoff from the little Mt Cook Airport and showed us Mt Cook’s majestic peaks and then flew on top of the base of the glacier(where the glacier ends) and after a 10 minute flight we landed on the majestic glacier. It was serene, indescribable beauty which can only be experienced, there are no words for it .....Standing on top of New Zealand’s largest (27 Km) glacier was unreal. We were blessed with sunny weather and no winds, it was dead quite and there was no one between us and the nature. It literally looked like a river that was flowing but had frozen recently. We could see pockets of water between the frozen ice, we drank some of the purest waters you could imagine........ to summarise it was a dream come true.....Ours was a 30 minute flight which was expensive but I would still recommend this as you don’t remember the money after a while but the experience stays with you forever. Again one of the highlights of our NZ trip

We drove there from Lake Tekapo but the GPS took us the wrong way.
We called and luckily the guide is willing to wait for us :)
Is about 20 minutes walk to the Glacier and the view is spectacular.
The sky is so clear that we could see the top of Mt Cook!

The guide is very professional to explain how the glacier was formed and how the icebergs change throughout the year.

Is a very unique experience and is a must do if you travel to Mt Cook!

It is work the money to take the Ski Plane up to the Tasman Glacier, the views really are breathtaking and the best way I can describe the silence is that it is deafening!! I also took the boat trip on the Tasman Glacier lake, you can see the icebergs up close, and the guides provide information about the Tasman Glacier, the Glacier Lake and icebergs. The guides gave us bits of melting icebergs to taste - the purest water/ice you will ever taste! At the end of the walk to the lake is a very steep down hill. Be aware that the lake temperature is approximately 1 degree celcius - not something you want to try. Definitely take your camera, jacket and beanie. Travelled November 2011.

No, you don't see this gigantic glacier under your foot without taking a scenic heli-ride! But walking up the moraine wall gives you a feeling of standing together with this million-year buddy which has forever been quietly lying down there. Riding on a noisy helicopter is, in my view, such a cruel act to disturb the ever-sleeping glacier and neighboring Mt. Aoraki/Cook.

From our experiences during this trip, the view here is better than in Muller, Franz Josef or Fox glaciers. If you have time and good equipment, you could go to the Ball Shelter which may last up to 4 or 5 hours to return. Or you could just go up the lookout spot just above the Blue Lake parking lot.
