The Taste of Marborough Half Day Tour started with a hotel pick-up in a luxury 4WD and then a leisurely meander through the beautiful Blenheim region on an equally beautiful early spring day. A visit to local honey producer The Honey Company, to sample the range of local honeys was both informative and a tasting sensation. Then on to collect gumboots (because the area had recently experienced local flooding) and a visit to local olive grower Basil Stanton at Stanton Olive Oils, a tour of the olive groves and an insight into what is involved in olive oil production. This former oceanographer has a wikipeadic knowedge about olives and willingly shared this. On then to local herb and lettuce grower Martyn Birch from Thymebank whose operation produces up to 20,000 lettuces a week for supermarkets and restaurants in Marlborough. Martyn is a perfect example of the new breed of entrepreneurs who identify a need and mobilize the resources to create a highly successful operation. Late in the morning we found time for a delightful lunch in the warm sunlight at Rock Ferry, a beautiful restaurant and winery well known in the area. Tour guide, local chef and entrepreneur Hamish Beard was a superb host, his local expertise and in depth knowedge of the local food and wine scene adding enormously to the pleasure of basking in the ambience of a most beautiful part of the world.

I recently enjoyed a guided cycle wine tour with Karen from Explore Marlborough. Karen is an excellent guide with lots of local knowledge to share and the wineries we visited all offered an excellent range of wines for tastings as well as local stories and as much information about wine as you wanted. The cycling was not at all difficult and an excellent way to explore this FLAT region with so many wineries to visit all within a short pedal of each other! The bikes are good quality and well maintained. Any purchases along the way are collected by Explore Marlborough and delivered to your hotel. There was no obligation to purchase any wines - each winery seemed genuinely pleased to see us without expectation that wine would be purchased from the cellar door there and then. It was a great way to get out and explore this fabulous region. I really enjoyed being out of a vehicle for the day (although the tour is supported by a vehicle in inclement weather!).

Well, if you have a set idea of what you want to see and experience, just brief it into Hamish, and he with his chefs experience, will create the right recipe to get you around Marlbourgh. From an education in food, wine, art and for just a great hearty laugh. A personalized tour is what I say makes the Marlbourgh experience truly yours. Own it!

Explore Marlborough's guided bike tour is a great way to really see the beautiful Marlborough countryside, taste the local wines and keep energetic kids entertained - all in one happy package. We toured the vineyards last summer, with Karen as our guide, as a family including our 11 year old and 14 year old sons and we all had a great time. Karen's knowledge of the local geological and horticultural history added context to the tour of the vineyards. The boys loved being able to bike through the vines and explore some of the back roads by bike. The long lazy vineyard lunch felt well earned, despite no-one really exerting themselves too greatly and we took home a few new Marlborough discoveries: clank, clank!
