“Not worth the price”
Reviewed 9 June 2014

The hotel, which is located in a former bank, is listed in the 1000 places to stay. Located in the middle of Blenheim, parking space behind the hotel is limited but available.

The rooms, all different decorated, are trying to match the art deco style. Sadly the comfort isn't the main focus as the old toilet, shutters not possible to close, and they could need a refurbishment soon.

Breakfast was ok but nothing special - no free wifi.

I note that your review this week is from a stay at our hotel more than six months earlier. There have been a number of items upgraded since that time as part of our ongoing maintenance programme. Each of our rooms is different in style and is carefully furnished to reflect it's theme.
It is this feature which makes our historic hotel a bit special rather than standard hotel rooms which are encountered elsewhere. I am sorry you did not enjoy the style of accommodation experience we offer. Please note the wifi is free of charge although it does not operate in some rooms due to its concrete and steel construction.

After reading the rave reviews about this hotel, we were looking forward to staying there. Unfortunately, the hotel (and staff) do not live up to the hype. And how it's a "bucket list" place is inexplicable. At check-in, the surly desk manager took us to our room, which was confirmed to be a king. We were taken to a queen room. Not the end of the world, so we asked if we could please get a king bed room. He ignored our question and asked if we were staying for dinner at their overpriced restaurant. After finally getting through about the room, he took us next door where there was, in fact, a king bed. He said it might take a while for the heat to come up. We weren't too concerned, so we went to dinner at a fabulous Indian place around the corner (Mango). Imagine our surprise when several hours later, the room was still only 15 degrees. When we asked about the heat, Mr. Surly could only sputter out "I warned you." At any rate, after another trip to the desk, Mr. Surly avoided speaking to my husband and pawned us off on a terrific young guy who was actually apologetic, got us some more blankets and a space heater. He said the king rooms don't have good heat. So if you want heat in winter, don't book a king room, or better yet, don't book here. On a side note, don't expect WiFi in the rooms, the router they have is not powerful enough to penetrate the thick walls. While the room itself was mostly charming, after the experience with Mr. Surly and no heat, we won't be back and don't recommend this property at all.

I must apologise for the less than satisfactory experience at our hotel which was caused by a number of coinciding problems. Unfortunately, your stay was in the middle of several days of a severe cold snap (minus 4 degrees overnight). The reservations staff had allocated you a queen bed in error and had heated the room to a comfortable level. By the time you arrived the reservation staff had finished for the day and the restaurant manager was to check you in but clearly was preoccupied with a very full restaurant at the time. There is no excuse for his lack of full assistance and I have taken this up with him. The room with king bed he reallocated to you is our largest room and had not been used for several days. It takes overnight to heat due to the solid concrete nature and large windows of our historic building. I am sorry that he did not place you in a warmer room as our reservations staff take great care to have rooms at optimum heat levels during winter stays.
The wi-fi problem is not an issue with the router, rather that our internal walls are 400mm thick concrete and steel which kills the signal. Once again unfortunately, the room you were in is furthest from the router with resulting low signal. There is no charge for our wifi and it works well in the bar, restaurant and guest lounge as well as most rooms.
Once again, I am sorry that your experience was not up to our usual high standard and I will be taking steps to ensure that there is not a recurrence of this.

Hotel D’Urville is a charming boutique hotel in Blenheim. The building was formerly a bank and the hotel rooms now have the benefit of the high ceilings and thick walls. It’s quirky but fun to access one’s room through a vault door! Our king suite was cool, comfortable and bright. The four-poster bed was very comfortable and featured high quality linens. Chris was an affable host, helping with luggage and offering thoughtful suggestions for wine tastings and winery lunches. The continental breakfast included in the room rate was generous and our dinner in the restaurant was outstanding. Hotel D’Urville is an easy drive to the wineries and within walking distance of many restaurants and services in Blenheim. Highly recommended!

We stayed in the lovely boutique hotel for two nights and we're very impressed. Beautiful rooms, very comfy beds, great service where nothing was too much trouble (we asked for a bread knife and a butter knife so we could have home brought antipasto in our room which was promptly supplied and then cleaned and re-left in our room the next day when they saw we still had some left). Breakfast was also a great selection and included in the room price.

Overall great value for money and well worth the visit!

The rooms here are all themed. I loved mine (from the Far East). It was very clean (very!), large and comfortable. The staff were friendly, professional and helpful. The restaurant lived up to its' reputation with excellent food, wines and service. I would definitely go back again! Highly recommended for anyone wanting something a little bit different to the norm. If touring the wine region, I would suggest a car to get around rather than relying on public transport and taxis.

I recently had a delightful stay in the lovely Hotel d'Urville and would recommend it to anyone wanting a hotel a little different to the norm. The staff are very helpful and accommodating. The room spacious with everything you might need for a few nights away, although I would have loved a bath to soak in after a long day sightseeing. Blenheim is a great central spot in beautiful Marlborough wine country. A meal at the restaurant is a MUST !

This is in a great location in the centre of Blenheim for touring the Marlborough wine country. All the rooms are decorated in a different style - we were initially booked in to 'Colours' but we had trouble with the door lock so were moved to another room whose decor was very retro 1960/70 in style. It was split level and we really liked it.

Restaurant is great - food, drinks and service. In fact, service throughout was excellent.

We were given complimentary wi-fi but the reception in the room was a bit patchy as the building is a former bank with thick concrete walls.

There is off street parking (a few spaces).

Overall a very pleasant stay and would be very happy to return.
