“Delightful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 January 2013

We had a fantastic time at Old Saint Mary's Convent.
The property is absolutely beautiful.
The buildings are charming, the grounds immaculate.
You walk outside to gorgeous gardens and the smell of lavender.
The house has that old charm but all the "new" comforts.
The room (we stayed at Sister Ancilla) was big enough to accommodate me, my husband and our two children (4y and 2y old) very comfortably. The bed and beddings are heaven.
The bathroom is very big and you can choose between the old charming bathtub or the powerful shower.
The room is equipped with air conditioning (hot and cold), but we chose to leave our windows open for the nice lavender breeze and birds singing.
It is that old/new combination that struck me as the best thing about the place, it feels like your perfect traditional country house, with all the benefits of a very well run hotel.
Hanna and Maria will look after your every need. From restaurant recommendations and bookings to picking up bikes for us to ride the vineyards and even taking care of some laundry for us.
The breakfast is to die for, second to none!
We felt truly welcomed.
Hanna, thank you very much for making our stay memorable!
We hope we can come back soon.

We spent our family Christmas of 2011 here in the adjoining Mother Superior and Sister Ancilla rooms: our first warm-weather antipodean version of the festival.

The property is charming: enough of the original features have been retained to suggest the institutional feel of working convents I have visited, yet there is plenty of luxury to remind you that you don't have to be getting up for Mattins at 5am. Rooms are traditionally furnished with dark-wood beds, wardrobes and tables, floral bedcovers and wingbacked chairs: the bathrooms are Victorian-style too and the whole thing is very period with sash windows and wood-panelled corridors.

Highlight for me was the snooker table, even if I remained distinctly amateur: highlight for m daughter were the resident cats (5 or 6 of them) and the opportunity to feed the chickens and collect the eggs, supervised by an older friend of the manager.

Breakfast was fine, served around a single long table (so you meet other guests) and thanks are due to the chickens for their contribution to this too.

Altogether this was a great couple of days and a major part of my daughter's memory of New Zealand as a place of great natural beauty, friendly hosts and pet animals. We would certainly return if in the area again.

It was such a pleasure having you and family staying with us over the Christmas period. I remember your lovely girls enjoying feeding the chickens with Maria, and your enjoyment of the snooker table! We hope that you will return again in the future.

We liked Old St Mary's very much. It is a lovely old building in the middle of fields with loads of lavender all about, bordered by vineyards. It is run by a long term expat British family, and is very well-maintained and characterful. The rooms are traditional and comfortable, with large bathrooms and space for all your things. The large windows allow a lot of light in, although you may want to keep the curtains drawn at times due to the fact that, at least where we were on the second floor, there is a large walkway all around which allows guests to enjoy views of the surrounding countryside but could slightly compromise one's privacy. Mealtimes are a treat, and we all enjoyed breakfast at the communal table immensely. We also enjoyed the several resident cats, which were full of personality. There are several large common rooms on the ground floor, including a well used billiards room, which we enjoyed a great deal. The host was a delight, always ready to make you a drink of an evening, and chat for a while in the billiards room. Of course, they know the area very well, and are able to arrange wine tours and other such activites, as well as recommend excellent area restaurants (Herzog is expensive but marvellous). There are numerous decorative touches which make playful reference to the hotel's past as a convent, which were mostly tongue in cheek and cute, but I didn't like the enormous cross on the landing. It seemed mocking and a bit creepy. Would you make fun of a Star of David or other such symbol? Nonetheless, this is a fantastic place where we spent an idyllic couple of days and I'd have no problem recommending it to friends.

We had been looking forward to returning to the Convent after seven years, as we were married in the gorgeous Chapel on the property and stayed there twice previously. The Convent did not disappoint, and in fact surpassed our expectations.

The current owners have made sympathetic changes to the property, including enlarging the number of social rooms, changing the colour of the buildings to lavendar (it was a deep red earthy colour previously) and tending the most beautiful rose and formal gardens.

The property itself is a thing of beauty and full of history, and we love the way the rooms are set out, with wrap around balconys, and loads of sunlight. The bathrooms are huge, and it is one of those places you can find the time to have a relaxing bath.

Maria the manager is a wonderful presence in the Convent and makes you feel like part of the family. She tends to the gardens, and makes the most delicious breakfasts.

The natural beauty around Marlborough is quite striking, with green rows of vineyards on the plain, surrounded by grey blue shadowed mountains. If you love vineyards and wine tasting, the main vineyards are only a short cycle away. There is no better place to stay in the Marlborough.

Room Tip: We love Mother Superior's room - the bath is great.

It was such a pleasure to meet both of you, and we were so pleased that you felt we had looked after the Covent since your last visit 7 years ago. We hope that you don't leave it as long this time and you return to see us soon.

Great location, 3 minutes from town. We were made to feel most welcome by Hannah and Maria and our room was immaculate. Maria even provided us with a herbal/honey combination for my wife's bad chest cough. Breakfast by Maria was a real treat and afterwards we were taken on a personal tour of the vineyard by Gerald the vineyard manager, this was a special treat with us being UK winemakers. Gerald was a true gem, he gave us some genuine insights into NZ vine growing. However our overall impression was that we had arrived out of season even though it was only early March. There was just one other couple staying. The pool was closed. You just did not get the feeling of 'sanctuary' that was given to be expected. It may well be that Old St M has a very different feel 'in season', however I'm not sure the unbelievably high billed rack rate can possibly be value for money, despite the lovely Maria !

Thank you for your review. I am dissapointed that you feel that the price did not reflect the high standard that OSMC thrives from. I can agree that it is quiet in March here in Marlborough, and this is a seasonal pattern that we experience. In regards to the swimming pool, this is never closed, it is at the guests choice if they would like to use it, but due to the weather over your stay we would have suggested that it may be too cold, but would have been more than happy to have taken the cover off if you wanted to use it.
I am pleased that Maria made you feel welcome and that Gerald our vineyard manager showed you around our vines and was able to give you advice on growing, and hope that those experiences are what you will remember from your stay with us.

Having spent three nights in Christchurch (and experiencing quite a number of rumbles from aftershocks even 1 year after the disaster), the Old St Mary’s Convent turned out to be a real heavenly place to relax and catch up with some good sleep. The property is a jewel and beautifully set in a lush garden with shady trees, fragrant lavender rows along the drive and walkways and the adjacent vineyards. My room was spacious with great garden views. Bed was very comfortable with clean and comfy sheets. Hannah and Maria are fantastic hosts and looked after my wellbeing and assisted in whatever I’ve asked or requested for so to make my stay a memorable one. Breakfast was great too, with a good selection of freshly cooked meals according to your liking. A well-stocked bar and their own wines are available to guests to round up the day exploring beautiful Marlborough. Words cannot describe the wonderful two days that I’ve enjoyed staying at the OSM convent and I would love to come back, one day, soon!

After a long drive from Mt. Cook, we arrived at the most special location on a beautiful day! We had no idea what to expect, but were instantly thrilled with what we saw. We happened to be the only 2 people there those 2 nights and so got the total attention of the manager of the property. Her name is Maria and she is a marvel. From keeping a perfect house, to beautifully ironed linens, elegant breakfast settings and freshly washed clothes hung out to dry. Maria showed me around her extensive gardens where she grows the fruit and veggies to use in the kitchen. We rode bicycles around the property and through the extensive vineyards and enjoyed a very large, bedroom with a fabulous bed and view on 3 sides of lavender rows, gardens and vineyards. This wonderful place is a must stay. Enjoy!

Room Tip: We only saw one, the one in stayed in and loved it, think it was #5. Lovely clean, new bathroom.
