“Plenty of facilities in an old converted house”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 April 2012

This hostel is situated in an old converted house, so there is a bit of an 'old building' feel about the place but it seemed clean enough. We stayed in a double room that was very spacious, airy and bright. The bathrooms were adequate but the floor was often covered in water after people had showered.

The hostel seemed to have a lot of facilities: kitchen, movie room, both wifi and coin-operated internet, washing machine and dryer/clothes line. I believe there are free canoes as well but we never saw them. It backs on to the river which is nice, but otherwise is strangely located in what seems to be the middle of an industrial area. However it only took us 10 minutes to walk to the centre of town.

The one thing I would change about this hostel is to make an official reception desk. The staff seem to live in a separate part of the house and it makes them a bit inaccessible...you kind of feel like you are bothering them if you have to knock on the door for anything.

I went to the grapevine because I read in the BBH guide that they have free canoes which is true. They have three or four of them and it's first come, first go but I never saw all of them being used.
From the veranda, you have a lovely view of the river that goes through Blenheim on which I was canoeing for about 1,5 hours - it was fantastic!
The rooms are fine and there are free lockers for your valuables within the rooms.

We had a private room which was away from the main hostel building so it was really quiet! We had a huge room with one double bed and a single bed and a TV. The back porch had a beautiful view. The best thing was the cheap bike hire! Billie was very helpful and extremely professional. Only a short 15 min walk to the main town but close to a convenience store if you need. Quite clean, didnt use kitchen so cant comment on that.

Room Tip: Get the twin or double in the seperate house, worth the extra couple of bucks.

We stayed at the Grapevine for a couple of nights as we had come to the region solely to take a wine tour.

It's a bit different from the usual hostels/backpackers we have stayed in. It is an old converted house, which is a beautiful building. We had a large double room at the front of the property with huge windows. It was light, bright and with plenty of space. The bathroom nearby was nice and modern.

It's situation is a bit out of town, along the riverside. Not a problem for us but maybe a bit of a walk if you're staying for a while.

However, the room wasn't very clean - there was sand/dirt all over the spare bed and dead bugs on the floor, plus sugar all over the sideboard. The in room kettle needed a bit of a scrub too.

The kitchen was a shambles. It was tiny, filthy and covered in flies pretty much the whole time we were there. On our last morning it was having a clean but too late for us! Everything in there was old and knackered. And due to the lack of space, cups and plates were stacked on top of the cupboards - my husband is tall enough to be see and be appalled at the layers if grime up there. Our tip is to wash everything before use!

The common areas have real character and are large, though very old and dated. There is a TV with free DVD's to rent from the office which was a nice touch. wi-fi pretty pricy however.

The staff were quite nice, though a little absent and distant. It felt like you had to drag information and help out of them.

Overall, I really wanted to like this place as it was a great house (would love to have one like it!!!) with bags of character in quite a beautiful location. So the lack of cleanliness, and care for the property is quite sad. It could be fantastic and a real feature hostel.
