“Great place, wonderful hosts”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 February 2013

I've just read over the other recent reviews and I don't what to add. Nettie, Jane and Bill could have done literally nothing else to make our stay more enjoyable.

From arrival drinks and snacks (happy hour!) with their own lovely wines (Worlds End SB and PN) through to advice on where to visit and eat over our 3 night stay. Meeting the other guests at drinks and over breakfast was also a joy - and seeing Nettie handle some of the guests would make Kofi Annan proud - she has the patience of a saint.

Both the platter and the breakfasts were amazing as others have said. Mostly from ingredients sourced at the local farmers market and with truly great skill in preparation from Jane (PERFECT eggs every time and just-crispy bacon!) everything was lovely.

And you'd have thought that's it. A top notch B&B experience with great hosting. Oh, and the lovely lab Texas escorted us in for breakfast each morning.

But here's where they really blew us away by being so kind. We took their advice and asked them to book us a meal at the Herzog Winery Restaurant (which we also recommend) and we asked them to organise a taxi. Nettie instantly volunteered (!) Bill to drive us there to save one of the taxi fares. Just amazing.

We also took their advice to book tickets to the winery concert on our final night happening at Villa Maria (which was also great fun!). Nettie said she'd lend us some blankets to it on. When we got back in the afternoon they had been into town and bought fold-up chairs for us to use.

JUST AMAZING. These guys are some of the genuinely kindest, warmest and lovely people we have ever met. If we lived locally, we'd want to be friends with Nettie, Jane and Bill.

Room Tip: We were in the Vineyard Suites. Suite 2 probably has stronger wifi if you care!

Our three night stay in a vineyard suite was just not long enough to begin to soak up the beautiful scenery looking out over an organic vineyard to the mountains beyond, the cozy suite, plus the amazing breakfast feasts each morning. Nettie and Jane are first rate hosts and chefs (they say 'just cooks') but this breakfast beats the Four Seasons hotel buffet in Bangkok - previously my gold standard breakfast. Even got to try delicious fresh milk from their 'share' cow nearby.

Nettie and Jane and, of course, everyone's new best friend "Texas" the black lab, are born hosts, inviting you in for a glass of wine and canapes on arrival and providing great tips on the area's wineries, attractions and restaurants. We'd pre-requested a picnic for Christmas Day and enjoyed Xmas ham rolls on fresh baked bread, apricots from the Straw Lodge organic garden and a Xmas cake so delicious I had to get the recipe. I can't rave enough about the amazing food. I'm a very passionate cook and love good restaurants so was in heaven in Straw Lodge. The food seems to be overshadowing the rooms in my review - they are very cosy, nicely done in a vineyard cottage style with everything you need, lots of books and magazines and gorgeous views to wake to.

Thanks to other reviewers' advice we stayed in one night for the "not to be missed" vineyard platter - highly recommended!!! See photo. More than enough for two for dinner. Best enjoyed with a bottle of their own wine.

Before we left Straw Lodge we decided 3 nights was not enough and cancelled our Melbourne vacation in 2 months time to rebook here for 5 nights. Can't wait for more of this warm hospitality and superb food. Will try out the hot tub next trip - what a stunning spot as the sun sets. Great walking/jogging through the vineyards also to burn off the brilliant food.

Thanks Nettie and Jane for making us feel so welcome and so well fed in Marlborough. Can't wait to return!

We stayed in one of the vineyard suites which was really fantastic. The room is designed perfectly, everything you might need was available, and the view from the bed on the vineyard is amazing. We can recommend the hot tub under the starry sky in the vineyard. We borrowed the bikes and made a ride in the area. The hosts Jane, Nettie and Bill are fantastic. They do their utmost to help you in every possible way. We ordered the vineyard platter which we really enjoyed, it was made with all local products, even freshly picked strawberries from their own garden. The breakfast in the morning was perfect, all fresh, local and home made products. We wished to stay longer at that perfect place!

This place exceeded all expectations.

The grounds are like an organic fairy tale. They have an herb garden, citrus, lavender and vegetables in bloom. All studded with playful sculpture from local artists. Not to mention the organic vineyards stretching out behind the room.

The local area was stunning. We stayed here for two nights at the start of spring. The view from our rooms stretched out over their organic vineyard. One day, we borrowed their bikes and followed the river and the local wine trails through the Marlborough vineyards. In Renwick, we played tennis on gorgeous grass courts. After exertion, we were all too happy to enjoy the sunset from their hot-tub with a glass of their Sauvignon Blanc.

The food at Straw Lodge is both organic and scrumptious. The breakfast feast included local free-range eggs,"happy" bacon from local pigs, fresh milk from their co-op's cow, and a range of incredible preserved fruit they prepare themselves. The breakfast alone would merit a five star review!!!

The night we cooked in, we grilled in their garden, enjoying the beauty of their covered dining area. We used herbs from Nettie and Jane's garden, supplemented by excellent meats and local produce they helped us source from friends in the area.

If you have a soft-spot for local and organic lifestyle, you MUST visit Straw Lodge. You'll be sorry you ever have to leave.

It is lovely to be able to stay at a b & b within a vineyard. The hosts were friendly and made us feel welcomed. We were fortunate to be able to taste their wines and sit and talk about the area. The rooms were clean, but a bit rustic. Overall, it was such a nice experience.

We traveled in New Zealand for a month with another couple enjoying some of NZ's best B and B's and small inns. This was one of our favorites. Nettie, Bill and Jane are all wonderful hosts. They provide the much appreciated opportunity to visit with them and learn more about the area while offering well designed accommodations with complete privacy. We stayed in Vineyard Suites #1 and #2 which are nearly identical, beautifully furnished and well maintained. Nettie and Bill used to have a furniture business which is reflected in the outstanding quality of the furnishings in the suites. We especially enjoyed the large, well furnished courtyards in front of each suite, each with a beautiful view of the vineyards.

The highlight for us was sitting with our charming hosts under a vine covered arbor and sharing Jane's tasty appetizers, World's End excellent wine and some delightful conversation.
Our only regret was that we opted to drive into town for dinner rather than pre-order one of Jane's platters. Other guests were smarter than were we and after seeing their fare, we regretted both the long drive into town and missing the opportunity to relax further and enjoy the atmosphere, excellent food and company. We liked the wine so much that we ordered a case of the Sauv Blanc shipped to us in California where we also have a winery. It arrived prompty and in excellent condition and we think of Straw Lodge whenever we open a bottle.

My friend and I borrowed the two electric bikes one morning and had a wonderful time biking around the back roads near Straw Lodge. Our husbands went into town to visit the Air Museum which they reported one of the finest museum's they had ever seen. They highly recommend it to all.

With a limited number of rooms, rave reviews and charming accommodations in the middle of the vineyards you will likely need to book well in advance to take advantage of this charming B and B. It's well worth it.

We booked the lodge for ten people over NY and found the place to be perfect. Highly recommend the platters to share, we had more than enough food and the outside seating was ideal. Hot tub was a winner with us all and the hospitality was excellent. Thanks Jane and Nettie for your welcoming experience.
