We stayed at Straw Lodge towards the end of our honeymoon. It was a perfect place to stay - the room was spotless and very welcoming, the views and surroundings stunning, and the hosts delightful and welcoming. We had great fun on the elctric bikes that Netty can lend you, exploring the vin yards in the sun shine, and stayed in for a lovely platter dinner and great company. If you want somewhere special to stay in this region, unique and run by lovely people, this is the place for you.

Straw Lodge is an excellent find and a great place to stay and use as a base for exploring the Marlborough Vineyard region. It's pretty unique in so much that it's a boutique working vineyard and the accommodation is made from straw (apparently the penny doesn't drop with all visitors :-) You're literally surrounded by the vines so you really do get in to the spirit of wine growing when staying at Straw Lodge.
The suites are great and although not massive, they provide plenty of room including outside space to sit out and relax. The beds are comfy and the bathrooms are great. You're hosts are Jane and Nettie who are just great. It's a warm and friendly atmosphere and great to chat, relax and drink their Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot. Whilst we didn't bring any back, we can purchase it from a UK distributor which we're going to do. On the first night, we sat out and ate the freshly prepared platter of local produce (whilst drinking the wine of course!) which we felt was far more fun than heading out to a restaurant. Breakfast are expansive and very tasty. There is a hot tub which you can sit and chill in and guests can also use BBQ facilities.
You can explore the vineyards in several different ways but we borrowed the bicycles (the ones with additional battery power for getting up hills!) and cycled a tour of vineyards, following an itinerary put together by Jane and Nettie. This was great fun and we discovered many wines we would not have otherwise found. If you like golf then you can borrow some clubs and go and play at a local 9 hole course 15 mins down the road in Wairau Valley. I got up early in the morning and played 15 holes before breakfast and didn't see another person. It certainly made a change from the courses in the UK.
Either way, this is an excellent and interesting place to stay so would recommend checking it out if you're planning to stay in the area.

We stayed at Straw Lodge over Xmas which was a wonderfully relaxing treat. The Lodge is in a stunning location with some wonderful vineyards close by and their own wine which we naturally sampled is also excellent. Nettie, Jane & Bill were excellent and very informative hosts. Our room was very private with great views over the garden to the vines & the hills. The outdoor hot tub also has great views. The house and guest areas were lovely with some fantastic outdoor spaces in which to relax and enjoy the views. Jane cooked excellent breakfasts with a good choice which were a great start to the day. It is a very sociable place which was hard to leave.

The service was great, and yes the place is built of straw. My wife and I arrived, got picked up at the airport then back to the lodge, or more simply described our bedroom door was 10 meters from the vineyard, that's around 30 feet. Yea, we had to wake up to grapes...
ohh hard life.

We did a 6 mile bike ride and then crashed.

Best meal we had in Australia and New Zealand combined was at Herzog. They treat you right, eat there once in your life and you will be blessed with an amazing time.

Nettie took care of us and on the next night we had the dinner plate just incredible.

For travelers, they have LAUNDRY! and for kids they have a dog named Texas who likes to say hi.

If you are in Marlborough please go stay with them. You will like it and like their wine. If you fancy a wine in the area we recommend two. Mahi, just full of flavor and Mount Riley's Savee...it's a sparking from Saviong Blanc.

Nettie set us up with a wine tour for $75 per person and Gary took great care of us. You are in good hands at the straw lodge.

Oh and bonus for those allergic to dogs like my wife, Texas will stay away from you and give you space unless you seek it.

They are awesome and charming, pick this and you will have a story to tell. Pick somewhere else and you will have a bed and then wake up to move on... not sure about you but we enjoyed the great night sleep and the story of waking up in the vineyard!

My husband and I spent three nights in one of the wonderful cottages. This was by far our favorite accomodation that we had in our month of touring New Zealand. As the previous posters stated, Nettie, Jane and Bill are terrific hosts. On our first night we decided to stay in our cottage and have their dinner platter out on the patio overlooking the vineyards. The platter was beautifully presented and delcious to eat with a bottle of their tasty chardonnay. We also had an fantastic dinner with them one evening, which I would advise for all to do. The food was delicioius and the company fabulous. The cottages have everything one needs, robes, books, t.v. comfy bed, very nice towels and linens. We were able to take some enjoyable early morning walks down a lovely country road and our days were spent touring and tasting at many wonderful wineries. It was hard for us to leave and I like others, wanted to take Texas, the beautiful lab, home with me.
I would love to return one day and spend more time. You will not be disappointed with The Straw Lodge.

Staying in a working vineyard was such a pleasure. Wonderful gardens. The straw cottages are cozy, well-appointed (interesting magazines to read, fragrant lavender soaps, plenty of beverages available to drink) and the manner of their construction is interesting. Nettie and Jane are excellent hosts. We were too tired to go out to dinner one night and they prepared a wonderful platter for us with delicious local cheeses, fruits, olives, breads, and of course a bottle of one of their best wines.
We were very happy that we took their recommendation and went on a private tour of the vineyards because the tour director was very knowledgeable about wines and I think her presence led the vintners to open their better bottles for us to try.
Texas is a well-behaved sweet dog who I would love to have taken home with me.
Hopefully, I will be able to return again some day.

Stayed 2 nights at Straw Lodge. Beautiful room located in the middle of a working winery. Nettie, Jane and Bill are wonderful hosts. Highly recommend having dinner at Straw Lodge one night. Breakfasts were amazing. Loved the flat whites. Jane is an amazing cook. Walked down to the river from the winery with Texas, the resident black lab. He is trained not to go in your room and will come over and see if you are ready for breakfast. Great wineries nearby. Really enjoyed Bladen and lunch at Herzog. Straw Lodge is fabulous.
