“Great B&B”
Reviewed 2 May 2007

We chose Straw Lodge after reading the numerous TA reviews where people gushed about their stay and we weren't disappointed. We stayed for 3 nights and Nettie, Jane and Bill (and Texas) were fabulous hosts!! Jane's meals were delicious and Nettie was full of suggestions of things to do each day. If you can, order the vineyard platter (full of cheeses, meats, breads, etc.) and try to take advantage of a dinner at Straw Lodge. We enjoyed a dinner with another couple staying there and had such a good time with them and our hosts. It also gives you an opportunity to enjoy more of the Churton wine (grapes from Straw Lodge property grown for this label). It was great to wake up next to the vines and see all the beautiful stars overhead at night. No other place we stayed at on our 2 week trip to NZ was able to top the environment and hospitality that we experienced at Straw Lodge.

We spent 3 great nights at Straw Lodge. Our hosts were wonderful and the place itself is very nice and perfectly situated on a vineyard.

After reading the reviews here, I couldn't wait to stay at the Straw Lodge. I was not disappointed.
Their property, in the middle of their vineyard, is heavenly. The rooms are stylishly appointed, clean and spacious. The owners, Nettie & Jane are friendly and helpful and Jane's eggs benedict are to die for. Their gorgeous lab Texas also loves to play with the guests.
This was my favourite place to stay during our 2 week South Island honeymoon.

In the 3.5 weeks my mother and I (her adult daughter) traveled throughout Australia and New Zealand, one of our two regrets was that we didn't have more time at Straw Lodge (the other was that we didn't have more time at the Lookout Apartment on Kangaroo Island, Australia). Nettie, Jane and Bill (and Texas, the black lab puppy, who doesn't go in guest's rooms) were terrific hosts. They worked with us prior to our trip to accomodate our somewhat late arrival and even brought us a complimentary bottle of their house wine when we arrived. It was delicious! The room was beautiful and very spacious--it was literally on the vineyard. We walked out our door into the vines. If you've ever dreamed of owning a vineyard, this is your chance to pretend like you do! Nettie joined us for a walk through the vines, explaining the harvesting process and making us feel right at home.

The rooms are completely private and quiet, and the views from the windows are breathtaking. There are a multitude of vineyards within a 5-minute drive and the town of Blenheim is only about a 10-minute drive away.

Nettie, Jane and Bill were charming and went out of their way to help us (even bringing us breakfast for our room as we had a 7 am flight the morning we left). I cannot recommend the Straw Lodge more highly and would encourage anyone staying there to arrive as early as possible and stay as long as possible. It was truly wonderful, and we will certainly go back!

We’ve just returned from a 4 week holiday in NZ and found this to be one of our favourite stays. We were particularly impressed with the location, and the friendliness of the owners.

What a setting, right in the middle of wine country. The location is very secluded, but yet only 10 minutes from Blenheim, which makes for some very enjoyable sleeps. Texas, the 18 month Black Lab, was an added bonus, he certainly made you feel part of the family. The rooms were excellent and we loved the CD selection in the room. We had some excellent wine, their own label and some canopies that were out of this world. The first evening we had a meal with Neddie, Jane and Bill and it was like having dinner with old friends. The meal was absolutely fantastic..

The breakfasts were the best we experienced during our four week stay and basically you could decide when you would like to be served.

Our second night we took advantage of our private patio and had some excellent wine and a meal we brought back from Blenheim.

Overall, we can’t say enough good thinks about this place particularly the hosts, who went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable.

We stayed 4 nights with Nettie and Jane who run a wonderful boutique home-stay amongst the vines just west of Blenheim. The vineyard (owned by Nettie and husband Bill) creates very a special setting for the 3 rooms with the Wairau River close by and spectacular 360 degree views.

Jane is a great cook and both she and Nettie have a wealth of local knowledge and a warmth of hospitality that makes you wonder why one would ever stay anywhere else in Marlborough. We found 4 days exactly the right amount of time to get to know the immediate area using the complimentary bikes, but you would be well advised to have a car available for trips to vineyards further afield.

Straw Lodge was one of the highlights of our trip to New Zealand, and I've no hesitation in recommending it to anyone who values a relaxation, great food and close proximity to someone of the world's finest wineries.

My husband and I stayed here for two nights as part of our honeymoon and absolutely loved it!! It was truly one of the highlights of an amazing trip. Nettie and Jane are incredibly welcoming and knowledgable about the area and make the best eggs benedict we've ever had! Their wines (Nettie's husband Bill grows pinot noir and sauvignon blanc grapes for the Churton label) are wonderful, the scenery at the Lodge is gorgeous, and the rooms are very comfortable, well designed, and stocked with many thoughtful amenities. The Lodge has free bike rental (we found the roads around the Lodge perfect for a leisurely ride around the vineyards); as well as petanque and an outdoor hot tub, and of course we loved playing with the Lodge's friendly labrador, Tex. On Nettie and Jane's recommendation we went to Gibbs, a local restaurant, for a fabulous dinner one night, and they prepared a wonderful "snack" platter our second night--both were great dining experiences. I would HIGHLY recommend Straw Lodge to anyone looking for both a top-notch B&B and a great value.
