“Unbelievable vineyard accomodations and wonderful hosts”
Reviewed 17 February 2011

My wife and I spent several nights at the Strawlodge in January of this year and it was one of the true highlights of our 10 days on the South Island of New Zealand. The hosts, Nettie and Jane, are so unbelievable and make you feel completely at home. The home and rooms are fantastic and they make your stay so incredibly relaxing. Nothing beats sitting outside your room looking at beautiful vineyards while sipping on great wine and playing with Texas, the lodge's amazing black lab. The night sky is also completely lit up by millions of stars which makes for a great time spent in the outdoor hot tub. My wife and I also biked to many nearby vineyards (the lodge provides the bikes and helmets for free) and also spent quite a bit of time chatting with the wonderful hosts who were just generally amazing people and also had a wealth of knowledge regarding the nearby activities. They convinced us to do an all day hike along Queen Charlotte Sound which we were so happy for because it was one of the highlights of our trip. The lodge also has an outdoor bbq which we enjoyed one evening when we didn't feel like going out to dinner. We truly can't recommend Strawlodge enough and are already looking forward to our next visit!

We stayed at the Straw Lodge for a couple of days in the beginning of November. It was the most memorable and fantastic experience of our trip to NZ. The hosts Nettie and Jane very very gracious and friendly. We would highly recommend a stay at the Straw Lodge if you plan to visit Blenheim and the wine producers.

Make sure you have breakfast at the lodge. I won't say much and let the pictures do the talking.

Straw Lodge was the perfect place for us to start our honeymoon. Our room looked out on the Straw Lodge vineyards and mountains - a beautiful and peaceful setting. We were treated like family by Nettie, Jane, and their black lab Tex - they couldn't have been nicer! Jane is also a fabulous cook. We loved our breakfasts! Nettie and Jane were so willing to share with us their knowledge about growing grapes, the area, sustainable farming...even though I'm sure they end up saying the same things to many guests, they treated us so well we really felt like we were being welcomed like long lost family. You won't regret staying here. It's a great experience.

We were greeted by an adorable black lab with a toy in his mouth, tail wagging and innkeepers who pay attention to every detail! Rooms were comfortable and had a great view of the vineyard. The food was wonderful! And we were treated to a stroll through the vineyard with the owners who taught us about growing grapes!! We want to go back again. Nice, casual atmosphere!

Nettie and Jane took great care of us during our stay at Straw Lodge. The property is beautiful and the rooms are sizable yet cozy. Nettie loaned us their mountain bikes and pointed us in the direction of some really amazing wineries. We really enjoyed their company and the happy hour wines, appetizers, and breakfast were all great. You should stay here on your next trip to marlborough.

What a great place to spend our first two nights in New Zealand! My wife and I, along with another couple, soon learned that a B&B is only as good as its hosts, and Nettie and Jane couldn't have been more welcoming. As the first guests to stay at Straw Lodge after their winter break, we had the place to ourselves with the two Lodge rooms (identical side-by-side rooms with views of the vineyards). Lodge dog Texas did his best hosting duties as well.

We love food and wine, which is why we wanted to stay in Marlborough in the first place. And the Lodge is situated perfectly among acres of vines. We had read about people biking around and visiting the wineries, and it seemed too good to be true. But it was true! Nettie and Jane have 4 mountain bikes, helmets, and maps for the perfect day out. We had a blast, and only one of us is a frequent rider! Also during this time, my wife was in marathon training and needed to do a 20-mile run. With me alongside on a bike, this run along the river ranked as the most beautiful run of her life.

The breakfasts were heavenly, with everything local. So was our dinner the first night, consisting of "platters" of small dishes. We went out our second night for more great local food. Speaking of local, our hosts poured us wine from the very vineyards in which we were staying.

The rooms are spacious and extremely quiet. We needed to get in some violin practice and our friends in the next room couldn't even hear it. It turned chilly while we were there, and there's no central heating, although the rooms are well insulated. So until we learned to heat up the room with the space heaters in the morning, and the beds with electric blankets at night, we spent some cold hours. Also, the bathrooms are smaller than your modern luxury hotels, but that's a very minor consideration.

Straw Lodge was obviously built with love, and that's the way Nettie and Jane run it. The day we were to leave Blenheim for Christchurch was the very day of the big earthquake, and our hosts helped us get in touch with various folks and reroute our trip. We were tempted to just stay on at Straw Lodge, but we had other connections to make. I can promise you won't regret settling down here!

Sustainable architecture set in the middle of an organic vineyard with grapes hanging from the vines - mountains on the vista - beautiful breakfasts - and travel with friends - what more could you ask for? Nettie, Jane and Bill are your hosts at Straw Lodge and all were accomodating and made our stay enjoyably memorable. A big plus here are the free bikes - 6 in all - that guests can use to explore the incredibly beautiful countryside free of charge. Rooms and amenities were very nicely done.
