No wonder Stonehaven is ranked No 1 here, though we didn't know it when we were there. It was one of our 3 favourite B&Bs out of the 10 that we stayed at in 3 weeks in South Island.

Certainly it had the best chef! Paulette cooked us an absolutely awesome dinner - the tenderest venison we've ever had, green-shell mussels cooked just right and scrumptious pavlova. She sources quality ingredients like a Michelin-starred restaurant chef. John patiently answered our questions about wines (and much else besides) and let us buy a few bottles from his own cellar. We really enjoyed talking to them and their down-to-earth opinions! It was great that they breakfasted with their guests rather than just serving them. They are both hospitality personified.

Our beautiful room was spacious and, like the house, decorated with interesting local artwork. Everything was provided - from bathrobes to sherry - with nice touches such as a truffle chocolate on the turned-down beds. There's a computer with Internet in the living room for guests to use. Our room balcony looked out on the surrounding vineyards and a lovely garden full of birdsong. There's also a herb and vegetable garden in the back, trees laden with lemons and oranges.

The property is a stone's throw from famous wineries like Cloudy Bay and Hunter's, but John suggested smaller ones that were eminently worth visiting too. He also advised us to find out if they had distributors back in HK so we wouldn't have to lug back the wines we liked (tho we ended up lugging back 9 bottles!)

Highly recommend Stonehaven, and book a dinner with Paulette & John if you stay there.

The worst part of our stay at Stonehave was that it was for only one night. We booked Stonehaven as a stopover from arriving early evening at Picton and before travelling down to Hanmer Springs the next morning. This homestay and the region demand a longer stay a minimum of two or three nights.

Our ferry was late but as soon as we arrived Paulette and John came out to the car park to greet us. Before even seeing our room, Paulette had coffee for us and discussed dinner, which is a must if you stay here. John was more interested in the wine selection for dinner and it is fantastic that he shares in cellar with guests. The dinner was the best we have experienced in NZ, and we have stayed at many places, food in NZ is always very good but our dinner that evening would have put a Michelin star chef to shame. Paulette and John are terrific hosts, we started dinner at 7.30pm and before we new it it was 10.30pm. The dinner, wine and conversation were much appreciated.

The bedroom was spotless and very comfortable, although I must admit due to exceptional hospitality we did not spend much time in our room, other than sleeping.

If we ever went back to Bleheim we would book Stonehave for three nights.

Absolutely beautiful accomodation, setting and hospitality with scooters and push bikes to hire to get you around the vineyards and see things in a different way. It was great fun hiring the scooters.

The rooms were luxurious with those "extra special" touches that leave you wanting to stay longer.

Highly recommend staying here.

A truly welcoming stay and such a personal touch is evident in all aspects of this accommodation - the luxury touches to the bedrooms and ensuite; the genuine friendliness of Paulette and John; hospitality......everything. It's quite a package. They've thought of everything and it's there to make your stay memorable. Two of us hired scooters for ease in getting around the vineyards - such a novel and fun way of getting about - at a fair price and available to hire on the premises. Great idea and beats the peddle power of a push bike. Thank you Paulette and John! From the two Scots and the two English girls - who by the way are all still talking to each other despite England 'just' beating us!
