“What a gem of a place!”
Reviewed 2 February 2013

I can't write my review, because Michael L. beat me to it. The place is so comfortable and inviting, you just don't want to leave. And what a breakfast! Spent so much time gabbing about our mutual interests, we only had time for 1 winery visit. It was still a perfect end to our trip, as I wasn't all that impressed with the knowledge of the greeter at Cloudy Bay, or with the new sauvignon blanc.

As Lowri H says below, John & Paulette strike the perfect balance between entertaining and respecting your privacy.

It was like staying with very good friends with a beautiful breakfast, great attention to detail and excellent facilities. It's hard work being in the people business, but they don't show it as they're excellent listeners, treating us as if we were their first ever guests. Their home are garden are delightful.

They shared their local knowledge of a fantastic area and recommended an excellent restaurant that we probably wouldn't have found ourselves. Didn't have time for the bike and motor bike hire, but it's a good touch.

We had an amazing time touring South Island.

Stonehaven was the icing on the cake.

Our stay at Stonehaven couldn't have been better. John and Paulette are brilliant hosts - striking a perfect balance between entertaining and welcoming you to their home and respecting your privacy. The evening meal that Paulette prepared was superb, perfectly complimented by wine carefully selected and presented by John. Breakfast was a real treat - I've been home a week and i'm still craving John's rhubarb compote! The bike hire is a real bonus - a perfect way to explore the amazing array of vineyards in the area. Thank you for a fantastic time!

I just finished my third stay at Stonehaven. As usual it was amazing. Paulette continues to provide an amazing breakfast and evening meals if you care to dine with her and John. I never go to restaurants in Blenheim as Paulette's culinary skills are unmatched in the area. John continues to share his wealth of knowledge about all things wine. I cannot wait until I can return again. John and Paulette continue to maintain a truely professional operation with special touches, while never losing sight of personal relationships important in their industry. A GEM amongst the wineries!!!!

Room Tip: The large King Room is my favorite. The view from the balcony is post card worthy!

Fantastic accommodation in a beautiful location! John and Paulette couldn't have been more welcoming or helpful, and the breakfast, with freshly picked strawberries and raspberries, were amazing. The bedroom/ensuite was top quality with every attention to detail, and I loved the home-made choc chip cookies! Many thanks for a great start to our holiday.

Stayed here with my niece and partner near the start of my trip - first taste of homestay in NZ and it set a very high benchmark. Great food, perfect location for our cycle ride round the wineries and interesting discussions with Kiwis over dinner and shared bottles of wine. But the welcome and the extra touches in the rooms were the bonuses. Highly recommended.

My husband and I rented bikes from John & Paulette our first day in NZ. They were absolutely wonderful! They both gave us the friendliest greeting at the front door when we arrived and got back to me right away over email beforehand. John gave us a map and routed out the best wineries to visit, and he and Paulette were sincerely excited to hear about our day afterwards. They are such a wonderful couple and their home is beautiful, set on a vineyard and lovely gardens. If they hadn't have been booked that night we would have loved to stay! They are so warm and accommodating. I couldn't recommend a better place to stay -- or to rent quality bikes from. We also bought a couple bottles of wine and fit them right into the wine pouch on the side of the bike. Such an awesome day. Thank you again, John & Paulette!
