“Lovely central hotel with friendly staff”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 May 2012

We travel extensively and as an Australian I can honestly say this is a lovely hotel with helpful staff.

Lovely linen on the beds with flatscreen TVs and plenty of space, which means excellent value for money.

We thought the eco touch was responsible and helping our planet, even though it may be helping ever so slightly. Why have some reviewers become so negative over people trying their best? Why does anonymity encourage exaggeration?

It's really sad to see negative people from bigger cities nitpicking to make themselves feel better.
Blenheim is a breath of fresh air with great wine, delicious produce and honest, straightforward locals. If that's seen as boring to some people, stay in your concrete jungle.

Thank you to Chateau Marlborough staff for looking after us and we look forward to our next trip to the beautiful Marlborough wine region.

Room Tip: They all seemed spacious and of similar nice quality.

Don't be fooled by their website metatag which reads "Luxury Accomodation Blenheim". There nothing at all above average about this joint - except their restaurant prices. And it looks so pretty in the photos, but parts of it are still being done up. Our bathroom was old and scruffy with mouldy grouting.

And because they are have some kind of Eco standing, this is licence for them to use eco bulbs in fittings not built for them, to leave the fireplace off in the restaurant (in May), and not even light the tea lights on the tables. Yup, it's all about them and saving money. The whole vibe is a little stingy actually.

If you are already booked in here, I'd give the hotel's restaurant the big swerve (over $30 for a main) and go elsewhere. Lunch at Wither Hills winery is good (pays to book, they are really popular) and the strangely named Watery Mouth Cafe just a block away actually has really good breakfasts and lunches - far superior to the hotel. For something really ritzy and special, book into Herzog Winery for dinner, the best place in town - or rather a fair drive out of town, you will need a car.

Note that both Herzog and Fromm wineries are now organic, worth a visit.

Thank you for your review of the Chateau Marlborough Hotel and the direct corrospondence we have had regarding your concerns.
It is unfortunate that the light glare from the ecobulbs was uncomfortable for you, it is not a complaint we have previously encountered however I do appreciate that your discomfort is the subject of personal sensitivity. The eco bulbs are an enviromentally friendly product used by the hotel as part of our sustainability efforts and form part of our Qualmark Enviro Gold rating.

In the interest of clarity our hotel rating is awarded via Qualmarks independant review process.

A small number of studio suites are the subject of bathroom refurbishment and this included the suite used during your stay. While that bathroom is programmed to be refurbished it is the subject of an extensive cleaning and maintenance programme. It is disappointing that it was in my view described by yourself in that manner. The remainder of the hotel comprises of brand new bathrooms.
I do however hope you enjoyed the complimentary breakfast included in your package in consideration of this. We look forward to the completion of our bathroom refurbishment programme with those completed bathrooms looking spectacular.

I have spoken to our restaurant staff concerning your comments regarding the use of the restaurant fireplace in the evenings.
Having had a particularly mild autumn period during your stay and the staff simply elected not too ignite the fireplace choosing to instead rely on the central heating of the hotel and thereby ensuring a comfortable level of heat throughout the restaurant. I certainly agree the fireplace certainly adds to the "feel" of the room and can assure you it is routinely used by staff over the colder periods. I would however respectively suggest that your use of the word "stingy" is unwarranted.

I note your concern at our restaurant main meal costs. I am happy to advise that our award winning restaurant which pleasingly is well patronised by our local population and hotel guests has an extensive menu and this includes main dishes available in the under $30.00 price bracket.

As our restaurant is not open for lunch I am pleased you were able to enjoy a number of local eateries in the Marlborough region ranging from cafes to the Herzog silver service fine dining experience.

I booked using the hotel's website to stay one night over Easter on our way home from Nelson to Christchurch. On arrival, the hotel didn't appear to be too busy, and the service was adequate. However, when we checked into our room, we found we had been given a room with only one queen bed, not a queen and single as I had booked (we were travelling with our 13 year old son). Back to reception, where we were told that they didn't have any of those rooms left, and we would have to have a fold out bed (the room would have been very cramped with a fold out bed) for our son. When I said this wasn't good enough as I had booked and paid for the room with two beds, no apology or alternative was offered, so we decided not to stay and drove home that night.

Thank you for your feedback. We would have, and still would appreciate, direct contact with management regarding this issue to ensure we would be able to rectify it, as please be assured this is not the manner in which we handle guest problems. I do hope we have the opportunity to discuss this with you further.

Stayed in The Grande one bedroom suite, Lots of room & comfortable, Service was lacking and room cleanliness was only average. I think the receptionist was finishing her shift when we checked-in as she basicly tossed us the keys an pointed in the direction of the room. Went to check out and I think she forgot to come back as I waiting a good while as people beside me ended up throwng their keys over the counter and leaving, in the end I shouted out to the person on the phone out the back room to hangup as I wanted to pay and get going.

No idea why this is a boutique hotel as it was very average.Given room downstairs at first, quite close to the footpath, no net curtains, felt like a goldfish bowl. Moved us upstairs on request. Reception staff very helpful. Blenheim a dull place with nothing much to see.
More suited to business people who just want to get some work done.
