Description: Hans Herzog Estate is one of New Zealand’s most treasured, truly artisan wineries. Settled in 1994 in the heart of Marlborough within the most beautiful gardens Herzog’s offers casual luxury and indulgence for food and wine lovers. Unfettered by commercial considerations, the Herzog’s have adopted an experimentalist stance, cultivating an eclectic array of grape varieties all of them highly acclaimed wines rich in varietal character showing off the covetous terroir. The Estate’s iconic Gourmet Restaurant, casual Bistro, stylish Cellar Door and lovely Vineyard Cottage oozes European elegance and together with vivacious Therese’s and her team warm hospitality it really is a must visit destination!

We went to Hans Herzog while on our honeymoon in New Zealand and absolutely loved it! We recommend having the Pinot Gris (which actually looks like a rose, but isn't) and the Zweigelt (A Austrian red grape). They are both delicious. There is a fancy (and more expensive) restaurant and a bistro which is served from the same kitchen. We went to the bistro on a recommendation from a local who told us we would be just as happy at the bistro. He was so right. We started with the bread/hummus trio which was great (we especially love German style bread which is what they served). We also had a lamb shank for two that literally fell off the bone it was so tender and delicious, paired with ratatouille, and potatoes. It was so savory. We really loved this place.

Have visited for lunch before in summer and it was fabulous, so grabbed the option to visit again and experience the degustation. The food was excellent, although the service let it down. We opted for matching the wines to the food - all wines presented were very cold and not at ideal temperature. Also wines were merely placed on table without any description of what it was we were drinking or how it matched to the food we were about to eat.... It was a winters night and the wood fire was not ideal - either wet wood or not lit properly so the bistro was very smoky. Disappointing for what should have been a fabulous night.

We were expecting Herzog to be a highlight. It was a lowlight! We went on a cold winter's night, the fire was out. Apparently the wood was wet and it made too much smoke. The ambience was non-existent, the lights were pretty much full on. Someone, either waiter or kitchen staff, made a mistake and supplied an entree size meal rather than the main course size. The main course size when it eventually came was not generous. The wine was expensive. Too expensive. As a winery with no overheads they should be able to serve a glass of wine for less than $16. The wine was certainly nothing exceptional compared to many other excellent wines in the Marlborough area. The food was well prepared and quite good but overshadowed by the rest of the experience. Overall a big disappointment considering that it had a big build up.

The bistro has a fantastic menu that makes it so difficult to decide, but what ever each of us picked, it was superb. Even better they can recommend/provide wines to match each dish. Lovely place to idle away the afternoon.

Lived up too all expectations and more. The price was actually reasonable and comparable to other fine dining in Blenheim and Australian dining The food was sensational. The beef Tatar was the best I've ever had and the banana soufflé with chocolate sauce was devine! We tried the 3 course 'trust the chef' and you should absolutely trust the chef. We left with three bottles of their Pinot Gris from the cellar door. All amazing
