We enjoyed our stay at the centre point motel. Jeff arranged a shuttle for us when we missed our flight from Auckland. He was helpful with maps and let us store our things there after we checked out so we could do more sight seeing. The room was very clean and had tea and coffee. We appreciated the heated mattress pad as it was chilly. We look forward to visiting again! Well done!

Hi Susan J and thanks for the review. Glad that you enjoyed your stay with us, especially the electric blankets! That's what we call them but in reality, your description as "heated mattress pad" is more apt! Either way, they are great on those chilly evenings. Thanks for your accolades, we look forward to seeing you again.

When we stayed:
October 2010

Caveat:
This review relates to a stay at the Centrepoint on Colombo prior to the big earthquake. As such, some of the information may have changed. Why was it left so long? I wanted to honestly and accurately appraise the motel - without appearing falsely positive because of the earthquake. All positivity below is there because things were great, not out of sympathy!

Why we booked:

We were on our third campervan trip to New Zealand and Christchurch was our last stop before heading home so we needed a place to stay for a few nights prior to our flight. I checked Trip Advisor for reviews of city centre accommodation as we had no transport so wanted to be walkable to the main sights. Centrepoint on Colombo had great reviews, so we booked up.

Original Booking:
We needed two rooms - one for my wife and I, another for my parents who were travelling with us and needed just one night in Christchurch. We booked direct via the motel's (excellent) website. We received our booking confirmation for the deluxe spa bath studio and deluxe studio rooms quickly. We were due to be staying in May 2010.

Change of plans:
Shortly before our flight in April 2010 European airspace was thrown into chaos by the eruption of a volcano in Iceland. This meant that our trip to NZ was cancelled at very late notice. I contacted Jeff and Naomi who, despite being under no obligation to do so, were very understanding and happy to drop our booking back to October. As an aside, EVERY company we dealt with in NZ at this time were brilliantly flexible and we lost nothing in the end. We rebooked and had the confirmation in place very quickly again.

Arrival:
We arrived after a long drive having dropped our campervan at Christchurch airport and taken a cab back into the City. Jeff greeted us with a smile and checked us into our rooms on the upper floor and walked us up to them.

The Accommodation:
The rooms were clean and tidy with modern decoration. The fittings were all good quality. We had a nice big, comfortable king bed. There was a small kitchenette area with complimentary tea/coffee/biscuits. The room had a nice en suite bathroom with spa bath. There were luxury toiletries in the bathroom. There is a vast array of TV channels available in the room and an LCD TV on which to view them.

There is a full list of the facilities on the motel website, but we didn't use them during our short stay. We did book a hotel shuttle minibus via the motel and that all worked out fine - Jeff advised us on timings etc.

Location:
The location was perfect for us. Ten minutes walk down to cathedral square, short walk to the trams, lots of nice restaurants and bars nearby, parking if required. Walking around Christchurch was lovely - lots of gardens, nice river, galleries etc and this could all be done easily from the Centrepoint. Jeff was a mine of information and was always happy to assist when required.

There had been an earthquake in September 2010, so there was some damage to buildings in and around the centre at that time. We had a couple of tremors too whilst there. This of course was nothing compared to the big 'quake in Feb 2011.

Check out:
Again, this was easy. We stored our bags in Jeff's giant garage, safely chained up in the morning and took the shuttle from the motel after a walk around the city.

Summary:
Jeff and Naomi obviously take great pride in their motel and this shows not only in their customer care, but in the quality of the rooms themselves. The location in the City Centre was perfect for us. I wouldn't hesitate to stay there again if I am in Christchurch and would recommend it highly.

Room Tip: Talk to Jeff about what you want! :-)

Well! Hello StuMoz and thank you for what is possibly the longest review we have ever had, and maybe the most delayed but we understand your reasons. Thanks for staying after finding us on TripAdvisor! Even though there was the good ol' volcanic eruption, we are glad you stuck with us! Glad you liked the rooms and the TV channels, although we now have a lot more since we upgraded to the 50+ package! Yes, we were just 10 mins from Cathedral Square and we still are, its just that its still off limits. We look forward to reclaiming our city centre back from the earthquakes soon! Great to see you found our location more than attractive. Thank you for coming to stay and thanks for the review. Its just a little bit hard writing this response since you are writing about Christchurch as it was and it is very different now. We are still close to town, its just that town has changed so much..... it would be nice to be able to turn back the clock.....

My wife, myself and my colleague were in Christchurch for business and glad to have stayed at this hotel. Jeff was a great host and tremendously helpful. Jeff even recommended a sushi restaurant then called and made a reservation for us. If in town again, will stay there

If you are looking for a very comfortable, quiet, relaxing , spacious, central , modern , clean and welcoming place to stay in Central Christchurch....look no further!! Seriously, lots of Motels claim to have it all but CentrePoint on Colombo really is exactly as described. Jeff goes out of his way to help in every way he can, including making sure the room is warm and your electric blanket is turned on . Thanks Jeff, you made our trip to Christchurch really memorable....we will definately stay with you again !!

Room Tip: We stayed in the One room apartment on the second floor, bedroom on the third floor. This was very quiet and very spacious. As we booked in at the last moment, and its a popular motel, we also stayed in a ground floor studio...this was equally as quiet and also very spacious (especially for a studio) You cant gowrong with either room.

Before the earthquake I imagine this would have been the perfect place to stay. The rooms are spacious, clean and well-appointed, the staff are very friendly and helpful, and it's a nice and comfortable place to relax. However since the city centre is now closed, there are quite limited eating and shopping options and the remaining tourist sites are now not close by with the exception of the container mall and the botanic gardens. Overall I'd stay here if I was doing something in the area (family, business, etc), but otherwise I'd look elsewhere if I'm a tourist.

Hello dlanods and thanks for the review
Thank you for complimenting our motel – the spacious, clean and well appointed rooms, the friendly and helpful staff and that we are a nice and comfortable place to relax. We are glad that you were more than happy with that aspect of your stay. These are things we can control so we are glad to see you are happy with them.
The effects of the quakes is largely beyond our control but we take steps including providing an interactive guide to all guests to show what is available close to the motel.
It is true that while some of the centre of Christchurch is still closed, and there are not as many restaurants as before the quakes, our position still offers positive benefits for all visitors to Christchurch.
We are still one of the very few accommodation options in Christchurch where you can easily walk to the accessible central city area including the Container Mall, Botannical Gardens and the Canterbury Museum that re-opens 2 July. If time in Christchurch is limited and you want to see the central area – including the havoc the quakes have wrought - then we are still a very viable option.
While we do not have as many restaurants as before the quake, we do have 19 food options (fish ‘n chips to fine dining) within a 1km radius and many more just outside this.
Our current situation also means that we are very quiet at night, which may explain the 5 stars for Sleep Quality – that’s a relief cos in a way sleep is what we sell! The other great things about this location is that it is easily accessible to all parts of Christchurch and is not affected by the congestion other parts of Christchurch can be.
While things are not the same as before the quakes we still offer an accommodation option satisfying to many people.
