We wondered why this was the only motel with a Vacant sign on, until we got to our room. The whole property is in desperate need of maintenance and a coat of paint. The basin was full of black mold. The bed was not quite as uncomfortable as the pillows, but the bedding smelt of smoke and as smoking is allowed on the property, we had a man puffing away outside our window every hour. I would not recommend this motel to anyone.

Don't be fooled by the exterior. I had per booked and when arrived was disappointed by the exterior being somewhat under maintained. But this is still rebuild Christchurch. This is older motel but rooms are a very good size. I stayed in the studio. Kitchen and bathrooms newly updated and in all pretty acceptable. Heating great. Full kitchen, what you get in the older motels :) so in all good. On main road but noise no problem

Room Tip: Probably back rooms better option

At the present time this motel is being used to house the influx of labour needed to rebuild Christchurch, leaving 1-2 units to motel users . Sadly the noise coming from the workmens units in the early hours of the morning meant that we didn't get any sleep after 4.30 - 5am . The half n'half system [ workmen versus tourist ] is not working . We have stayed at this motel 2-3 times prior to the quake and would of rated it then very highly but the way it is at the moment would not recommend to visiters wanting a good night 's sleep.

We stayed in a 2-bed apartment unit. The unit was spacious and had a full kitchen and good shower.

The owner/manager was very conscientious, offering us fresh milk for coffee, a heater in case we needed it for the night, and invited us to use the well stocked DVD library as needed. Ask for Internet and you get a wifi unit for NZ$5/day, which is a real bonus!

The location is good for getting to Christchurch and the universities.

Only point I would make is that the rooms need a bit of modernising or refreshing. But otherwise, a comfortable and good value option.

This is an older motel, yes the carpets are not new but the place was clean, the owners friendly, and the beds were comfortable. If you are looking for a fancy new motel with lots of extras, go elsewhere, if you are looking for a good 3 star place, this is a good pick. Added bonus was that the airport was just 10 min away.

I stayed for one night at the Earnslaw Motel at the end of a five week campervan holiday in South Island NZ prior to flying on to Singapore. It's conveniently located on the Blenheim Road -reasonably close to shopping facilities (if you need them) - don't know about restaurants - used the kitchen and the last of my 'supplies'. The place is clean, comfortable and well equipped - its more of an apartment than a room. There's a good sized kitchen - full cooker, fridge freezer, microwave and the usual toaster, electric kettle etc. In the main room there's a double bed, table and chairs, a couple of easy chairs and a TV. The bathroom is also a decent size. The shower is excellent (the cubicle's big enough to actually turn around without banging your elbows).

Accommodation is generally pretty expensive in Christchurch but the Earnslaw is very reasonably priced for what's on offer. I made the booking through Agoda - no problems - and the owner was helpful with sorting out a taxi transfer ($NZ20 - fixed rate) to the airport. I would certainly use it again.
