“Average but cool wi-fi”
Reviewed 20 June 2013

Recommended by friend. Stay there two days and one night. Location is easy to find. Reasonable price with reasonable facility. 10 minutes walk from Christchurch certer. Nothing to complain. For me, the best thing is 100M free wi-fi. Cool!

This motel was the worst. I have slept in many motels, hostels, camp grounds, on my friend's kitchen floor, and I think once in a tree, so I am not a very picky person. And this was the worst place to sleep. When I asked the man working there if I could see a room before paying, he acted like I was being strange and unreasonable. The room was big and had a kitchen. Everything inside the room, except the TV, was very old, so that there were many large holes worn into the fabric drapes. But it looked clean enough and I was very tired, so I accepted, and what a mistake. When I layed down on the bed it was springy and I sank into it like I have never experienced before, so it was more like sleeping on a chair in an airplane then on a bed, except that a chair on an airplane doesn't make noise. It was the worst sleep ever, and I cursed myself for not saving my money by sleeping in the car (even though it was cold outside). In the morning I told the same man working there about the bed in a very polite way ("I just thought you should know..."), whereupon he began being dismissive and walking me toward the door, which made me believe he wanted me to leave. I guess this motel would be a good deal if you were part of a large group and everyone was extremely drunk. But for normal situations, stay away.

We found this motel online. It is just what we needed for our 2 night stay. Small kitchen and 3 beds made our stay comfortable and affordable. Good central location. The Manager was friendly and checked us in with no hassle or wait. For a family traveling on a budget I would recommend this place.

Stayed here for three nights in March 2013. The motel is located in a suburban street, not too far from the central city area.

The property appears to have been built in the 1970's or thereabouts and most of the features and fit-outs still hark back to that era, such as the traditional shower with water heat "dial" which can be found in similar traditional motels (and homes) in NZ. Apart from the TV and stove most of the furnishings are rather dated.

Being a traditional NZ motel, the room is like a small flat where you have everything you need to sleep, wash and cook your meals.

There's the bedroom, which in my case had two single beds; also a wall-mounted mid-size LCD TV (the only new item in the room), a small fan heater, a wall-mounted open "cupboard" to hang clothes, a couple of small storage cabinets with drawers, alarmclock, phone. The TV has Sky and there's wifi available from the motel although I did not use it as I have my own USB stick.

There's a small but complete kitchen with a small table and two 1970's era chairs (adequate to do work on the laptop); a 4-burner stove (fairly new with ceramic top) with full oven, a half-height fridge, and a kitchen bench with sink. A microwave is also provided (however the turntable was not turning), as well as a kettle, toaster, and set of pots, pans, plates, cups, glasses, mugs and cutlery - you can truly cook a complete meal here, although some of the items in the kitchen are far from new. The selection is adequate however.

There's instant coffee, tea bags, and sugar provided in the kitchen, as well as the traditional small bottle of fresh milk.

The bathroom had three separate areas: the shower, the sink in its own little partition, and the toilet with a separate sliding door.

All in all a good place to spend a few nights, particularly if you don't want to spend the money other hotels are asking. The bed was very soft (mattress felt old/uneven inside with noisy springs) however which I don't like.

There's a guest laundry, however I did not need to use this so don't know the details.

The area is quiet and even though my room was at ground level on the street side there was very little street noise in this suburban street.

There is a bus stop near the motel however unless you know the city, navigation by bus is a bit enigmatic, as the city website only lists the areas/roads where each bus line goes without a map. And so it is only useful for locals who know what is what when they read the name of an area or street, or if you do fairly extensive research on a map.

Taxis are expensive in this city, I paid $50 for a taxi from the airport to the motel, and $22 for one from this part of town (Linwood) to Addington, which is about 5 kms away.

I would recommend coming here with a car (easy to rent at the airport). This is a motel so there's car parking onsite, usually in front of the units as far as I could see. However if you're only going to (what is left of) the CBD, you can walk this from the hotel in about 20-30 minutes depending on how fast you walk. It's effectively down the road - however it's a rather long road.

There is a small but expensive supermarket about 5 minutes walk from the motel, as well as a few take-away shops (fish & chips, a non-branded burger place of some kind, and a Subway). In the same area there's a dollar store and a couple of ATMs (one general "QuickCash" ATM and a Westpac one). The supermarket has a limited selection of beer and wine.

The motel owner is very helpful and when I needed a drycleaner, he asked a friendly chap staying at the motel for directions. This gentleman then promptly offered to drive me to the drycleaners and back again (it would have been at least 20 minutes walk). The lady who cleaned the room was also very friendly, a caring grandma-like personality.

This is a basic but adequate place to stay, with friendly owners. A traditional and simple "local style" motel in a quiet street not too far from the city centre.

We booked this motel directly without much fuss

reasons for booking

- cheapest rates for a central motel in Christchurch [ we stayed back at Christchurch before flying out to Auckland just to suit the flight timings - had little intentions save the nights sleep ] . Did not expect anything better than a very basic sleep and scoot place .

reasons for a strong recommendation

- this place is very nice with car parking right across your door
- Barry Murdoch is a gem of a host - full of infective good cheer and loads of helpful info about town
- spacious and comfortable family room ; two bedrooms and a full kitchen with cooking range . Enough hardware to cook a horse .
- just outside the devastation zone on a very quiet avenue yet only a few minutes drive away from the city attractions
- very good value for money and a pleasant surprise for us .

The owners are friendly and helpful, bus stops right outside (and chch has the best bus system I've come across), and only 2 mins walk to sm block of shops with choice of takeaways and convenience store. I stayed in two rooms, the first twin studio beds not very comfortable, but no probs with the second, a single suite. Both had sep kitchens, and i was able to wash and dry a load of laundry. Its def not flash but not bad value for money either. I would stay there again.

Old and worn out. Stained carpets and bed speads, collapsed mattresses in both rooms. Heater in bathroom inoperative, doors that do not close properly. Room was advertised as having a washing machine but this was not the case. Laundry room located downstairs and behind the building, the washing machine did not work properly and neither did the dryer, $5 per wash. Everything is needing to be replaced but no money has been spent with the exception of a new sofa and tv, but this just highlights how revolting everything else looks. A really poor effort for NZ100 per night.

Room Tip: If there is no other option in Christchurch, maybe stay here.
