“Relaxing, welcoming and thumbs up!”
Reviewed 9 March 2010

I stayed here for 4 nights in all and found the cottages to be clean, airey and the breakfast provided was just the perfect balance! The owner, Chet - who has a lot of fingers in a lot of pies!! - was incredibly welcoming and kind during my stay, helping as much as he could when i needed to sort out rental cars, tours and getting around Christchurch. The cottages are not in the city centre, about a 5mins drive or 10min bus ride. For me this was not a problem as it's nice and quiet here and a gateway to going west of nz or to the Banks Penisula.

Thank you Chet (and Steve) for an excellent stay and making my first time in New Zealand a memorable one....I will recommend!

Close to town, only a 10 minutes drive, the Designer Cottage has 3 rooms for only one bathroom with the toilets in the bathroom... It is a little house, very charming, outside and inside, Chet the host is very nice, the only and major issue we had was the cleanliness in the toilets and the kitchen! The toilet was very dirty, the pantry was dirty, the drawers with the forks and knifles were very dirty too! That was really too bad, because once again the house is very comfortable, comfy. We told him, so hopefully these issues have been resolved by now... Because it is a B&B, Chet brought us a tray the day we arrived with cafe, sliced bread, jam, homey, muesli, yaourts, milk, orange juice for the 2 breakfasts to come.

I stayed at Desinger Cottage in Christchurch during our trip with my mom from Japan. As on arrival the owner welcomed us with a warmth and check us in very smoothly. We soon felt at home in this cute three bedroom cottage, Mom and i went upstairs in the lounge in a warm sun with a cup of coffee and relaxed there for a while. It was really nice to relax like that especially after the long drive that day. The cottage is located away from the main road and I remember it was really quiet most of the time.

Another place we enjoyed spending some time is in the garden. It's not a huge garden but it's very detailed. No wonder the owner designed it himself! and it's well maintained. I really loved the fregrant pink rose in the middle garden.

We had a double onsuite room. The bathroom was newly refurbished and everything was very clean.

We went out for dinner came back and went to sleep, didn't meet other guests in the house until next morning at the breakfast table.

This is a place you want to come back to and looking for my next stay in near future.

My first impression of the Designer Cottage on arrival was what a uniquely attractive b&b this is, located in a residential area of Christchurch but close to parks, bus stops, shops and only 20 minutes walk to the city centre.
The cottage itself has beautifully designed gardens and inside beautifully fitted-out rooms. The owner, Chet is friendly and accommodating. During the time spent there I really enjoyed Chet's hospitality and happy personality. The rooms are comfortable and there is space outside to relax and enjoy the garden. Upstairs there is a communal room to relax in. Chet will quickly point you in the right direction for coffee, takeaways, shops, restaurants and the nightlife, as he is very knowledgeable about Christchurch and beyond.
I would definitely visit the Designer Cottage again!

Not a good start - as we arrived the owner was in an argument with a couple of guests who wanted to leave early as their car had been broken into the night before outside this accommodation. However the owner was refusing to give them money back if they cancelled.

The room was shabby, didn't have locks and wasn't particularly clean. The bin hadn't been emptied for example. The tv wasn't tuned in properly. Breakfast was okay - a basic continental breakfast. The only place we stayed where our car didn't feel safe. The owner advised us to take everything out of the boot into the room.

The only space for guests is a tiny kitchen table. There was no guest lounge as is usual in decent B and B's in NZ. This wasn't as good as some hostels we stayed in - it definetly wasn't boutique accommodation.

Hi Lesley,

After you and your girlfriend stayed with us last year, it has taken us almost a year to consider responding to your negative review.

I was very disappointed that we had to deal with an alcoholic couple during your stay. I assure you that when we started the B&B our main intention was for sharing the heritage experience of Sydenham, Christchurch and not for the intention of upsetting any of our visitors.

However we were more disappointed that we offered you to be relocated to another B&B to avoid any bad experience, but you requested a discounted rate which never shows on your review either.

Your review is only speaking one side of the story; we hope you could know us better before judging us after your one night stay. We understand your frustration, and best wishes to your future travel.

Best Wishes,
Chet

We found this homestay very pleasan Chet was an excellent host and Designer Cottage is within easy walking distance to a rather pleasant restaurant. The premises were very clean and tidy and we enjoyed chatting with Chet each day. There is a lovely fish and chip shop that he recommended that was really awesome. We had Akaroa Blue Cod and the fishe we got was quite huge but very tasy. I would highly recommend Designer Cottage to any one. Hope to return there some day. Jo & Graeme Marshall
