“Great spot, great view, great vibe”
Reviewed 26 February 2013

Really enjoyed our stay over. Real sense of history and character but still well maintained and neat. Room was nicely done and very cosy (1 metre more of space to get past bed would be great but more an irritation than showstopper). Balcony is really nice and you are sure to chat to your neighbours at some point which adds to the appeal. Had a great meal downstairs, excellent wine list and good menu. Pub looks like good local spot, probably get quite rowdy at times but we had no problems. Breakfast room nicely stocked for light breakfast. All round, a good experience.

Room Tip: view of bay advised

Although we checked in pretty late on a Friday night, the staff was very friendly & accomodating and served us a lovely dinner and drinks. There was a lively but comfortable crowd that had overflowed out on to the porch tables and garden. Even if you don't book a room, this is a great place to go for drinks and dinner. We loved our bay view room upstairs, that opened onto a large verandah overlooking the beautiful bay! We slept very well. Although the bathrooms are shared and across the hallway, this was not a problem at all. A nice surprise was long terry robes in the room. A small breakfast room down the hall had everything to fix up a continental breakfast, which you could eat there or take out to the verandah, which had plenty of seating for guests and a telescope to watch boats on the bay.

Room Tip: I didn't see the other rooms, but I think the little extra price for the bay view with access to...

Delicious dinner in the garden, great view over the harbour, high ceilings and french doors onto a deep verandah, a buzz of conviviality from the patio and a good sleep in lovely white linen. We loved the friendly service, lingering sense of history (with a walk down the passage to the bathroom and a downstairs pub)- this old lady sure has a past- combined with the simple finishes and modernised conveniences like bathrobe, bedside basin, breakfast room and great reading lights. Luckily twe were there on a week night so the pub noise died down early enough for a good night's sleep.

Our family of 3 took 2 rooms overnight as part of a long weekend on Banks Peninsula. The other 2 were in Akaroa and would thoroughly recommend this 3 night 4 day trip to Cantabrians etc.
We very much enjoyed our 24 hrs at Governors bay Hotel. Jeremy, the owner was very obliging about check in and check out times. We had a meal on the Saturday night. The food was universally excellent. The hotel is very honest on its website and states its limitations clearly (shared verandah and lack of en suite facilities) and we did not find this a major problem. The rooms have been done up recently and are very clean and pretty. All but room one are on the small side but the views are spectacular and even the cheapest room on the other side looks sunny and nice. Our bed was extremely comfortable. There was noise as expected with the bar underneath on the Saturday night. The downstairs garden and patio areas are very attractive for brunch/lunch and the hotel provides a simple continental breakfast which one should take and enjoy on the verandah. We got internet in our room easily.
Governors Bay is a lovely spot to spend a day or two-vist Onietahi garden, Cass Bay for a swim, eat at the hotel, maybe a snack across the road at She Chocolate which we didn't try but has good reviews.
We will come back!

Room Tip: Pay extra for the king bay view -Room one-if there are two of you.

Dear John,
Thank you so much for your time in providing your review on TripAdvisor. Our hotel is a constantly evolving thing and it is with guest feedback such as yours and others that we can endeavour to improve. We have just installed a Nespresso machine in our breakfast room so guests can enjoy better coffee in the morning. With regard to the shower pressure, in fact we have really good hot water pressure and very poor cold water pressure. we installed a instant gas hot water system recently which works off mains pressure. As I write we are in the process of diverting our gravity feed cold water system to mains pressure as well so if you come back, we'll hopefully exceed your expectations.
Kind regards,
Jeremy Dyer

Cons:

We found this hotel by chance after a long day driving through Arthur's Pass. Full of old world charm, the shared facilities and balcony were not a problem. The most comfortable bed and best food we have had in NZ.

Room Tip: Try to get one of the balcony rooms and enjoy the view of Governor's Bay!

We stayed here for 2 nights at the end of a busy 3 weeks round NZ. It was just what we needed. The room was spotless and nicely done, the view was amazing and the owners and staff couldn't have been nicer. Bathroom facilities are shared but it wasn't a problem. We also had a shared verandah. Again, not a problem. The food was some of the best we had in NZ and I definitely slept better here than anywhere else. We barely left the place it was so good, and we'd stay again without a doubt. Thanks for a lovely time!
