Owner description: KiwiRail Scenic Journeys is New Zealand's only long distance passenger train operator. We take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. It is an experience, not just a journey. The Coastal Pacific is our summer train, traveling between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island between October and April each year. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges, journeying through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander Ferry & Sounds Air Scenic flights in Picton, taking passengers to and from the capital city, Wellington. KiwiRail Scenic also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

“Somner Survives the Big Shakes of the Quakes”
Reviewed 22 October 2011

I was humbled to meet such stalwart villagers of Sumner whose Spiritual Strength transcends all negativity and great loss that Mother Nature visited on this beautiful Community. I donated NZD $100 to the Sumner Disaster Relief Appeal which found at the Underground Cafe. Debbie was a great advert for the Spirit of Sumner. The Destruction and Devastation is unthinkable

“First class Train Ride”
Reviewed 25 August 2011

Coastal Pacific is the name of the scenic train travelling daily from Christchurch to Picton. It also provides a scenic day journey between Christchurch and Wellington by taking the connecting Interislander ferry from Picton. More than a third of the 350 km rail journey is along the spectacular Kaikoura seaboard where one can spot seals basking in the sun, and occasionally, a whale.

The train has large panoramic windows, licensed buffet carriage and excellent live commentary. It is easy to include the journey in one's New Zealand travel plans.
