Owner description: The Great Journeys of New Zealand operate three long distance trains and three inter-island ferries that take passengers across New Zealand in comfort and style through some of the most scenic areas of the North and South Islands. The Coastal Pacific train travels between Picton & Christchurch in the South Island. It's a dramatic tour of New Zealand's coastline between the Pacific Ocean and the breath-taking Kaikoura ranges. The Coastal Pacific journeys through 22 tunnels, across 175 bridges and past spectacular wildlife and marine-life. Coastal Pacific services connect with the Interislander ferry at Picton to provide onward travel to and from the capital city, Wellington. The Great Journeys of New Zealand also operate the Northern Explorer (previously the Overlander) between Auckland and Wellington, and the TranzAlpine between Christchurch and Greymouth.

“Incredible trip through east coast”
Reviewed 4 December 2013 via mobile

Me & my husband took the train from Picton to Christchurch. The view was outstanding. The train itself was clean and comfortable. Worth to try if you are travelling in south island.

“Sit back and enjoy the scenery”
Reviewed 29 November 2013

We were fortunate to get a deal ( visit the Kiwirail website) from Wellington to Christchurch ( and 2 leg return) consisting of the Interislander ferry to Picton where we picked up the train which waits for the ferry if it is late...(which it was!) making our journey very good value and stress free as you are kept very well informed along the way. The train was comfortable, light ,clean, airy ..couldn't fault it , and the staff cheery and efficient. The only downside was that due (we think) to a raid on the buffet car by a large school party the choice of food for lunch was limited on our outward journey.Headsets were provided for the commentary which intermittently gave information about the history and natural history of the areas being passed through.Unfortunately this ' slipped' quite a lot so didn't always make sense but I'm sure this will be quickly rectified. The viewing platform was great to get some fresher air and take photos. Seats were already allocated so no problems there..As a party of 3 we had a table which gave us lots of space. Your luggage is loaded into the parcel van for you and returned to the platform at the appropriate station, a system which seemed to work very smoothly.
We booked to do our return journey in 2 stages, stopping off at Kaikoura for a few days. It is relatively easy to book a staggered journey using the website but just remember there is only one train in each direction per day so no choice of times.
As a way of seeing the scenery I don't think this way of travelling can be beaten and the area is stunningly beautiful.A definite highlight is glimpsing all the seals once you are running directly along the coast.

“Wonderful coastal view as you travel”
Reviewed 25 November 2013

Train was a little bumpy due to the poor track conditions, but otherwise a great trip and wonderful views from the windows. Good food and excellent service.

We travelled from Picton to Christchurch and absolutely enjoyed the entire journey. The staff are warm and friendly, the seating very comfortable (5 1/2 hours journey), the automated commentary informative and entertaining and the ever changing scenery just so beautiful!

“Train to Picton and ferry to Wellington.”
Reviewed 21 October 2013

Fantastic trip up the East Coast. On board commentary keeping you well informed of all the areas we passed through. This is one train ride you shouldn't miss if you like riding the train. Ferry trip was excellent as the weather was good...can be hairy when the sea is rough but we where lucky this time.
