We traveled during one month in Australia and New Zealand and this was by far the best hostel we stayed. The hostel is really cozy and you really feel at home. The staff was really helpful and nice. Everything was really clean, room, toilets and kitchen. Definitely a place to stay again, actually we didn’t want to leave the place, since we knew that we wouldn’t find a place like that again!

Amazing staff and amazing place! There is a really nice open living area with new sofas and a flat screen tv and a wood burning fire. We were in a twin room which was small but really cozy with really nice decor and comfy beds.

The shared bathrooms are gorgeous! Really powerful showers and large mirrors.

Theres a good size kitchen and separate dinning area. The kitchen is fully stocked with plates, pans, cuterly etc.

The staff were so helpful and friendly. They can book tours and taxis for you if the reception is open.

There are 2 cats, they are not in the bedrooms or anything just around the living area incase you have allergies.

Room Tip: Twin room was nice for a bit more privacy.

I had an unplanned stay at Haka Lodge during the snow that hit Christchurch at the beginning of June when my travel plans were cancelled. When they say every cloud has a silver lining, this was definitely it! Absolutely lovely hostel. Having stayed at the Jailhouse the night before, this was a vast improvement. I elected to stay in a double room which was clean, comfy, warm and came with a TV and DVD player. Very quiet generally and very easy to have an extended lie-in the following morning. The lounge area had a fire which was kept going throughout the day and a nice community atmosphere. The staff who run the hostel are fantastic and very helpful. The cats are always around but never in the way and added to the homely feel of the place. The kitchen isn't huge but was big enough to cater for everyone's needs. Plenty of room to sit and eat, as well as to make use of the SkyTV. Several supermarkets nearby and the hostel is on a bus route so you can get into town if needed.

I can't recommend this hostel enough. I liked it so much that I stayed here again on my return to Christchurch. There aren't a large number of beds so make sure you book in advance in peak season and you'll be glad you did!

Room Tip: I stayed in two of their double rooms and both as good as each other. The dorms are also recommended, no bunk beds and partitioned off into smaller areas.

After a gruelling red-eye flight into chistchurch we found ourselves here. The rooms were warm and ultra clean. The rooms also have DVD players and good quality tvs. The beds are so comfortable that we seriously had trouble getting up in the morning. The lounge and kitchen are homely and if you've been in a string of hostels will remind you what these rooms are actually meant to look like. The staff are friendly and relaxed, and the place features a couple of cats. The only downside was one of the cats caimed our bed for a while. The place is a touch far out, but on good bus routes.

The Haka is the ritual warriors use to invoke the power of mana, spirit, when preparing for battle. it is also about hospitality in that you are gaining and sharing your strength with the land, your brothers and the sky. Haka Lodge lives up to this latter deeper part of the ritual. The lodge is only about a year old but Haka Tours its owners has been going for more than five years. I have tried the tours yet but based on the conversations I had with people who came through the lodge during my week long stay there I will probably do it later on.

The staff were knowledgeable, helpful and professional. They were full of information about things to do and the history of Christchurch and the south Island. The place was clean and well maintained. The place is a little out of the way but close to public transport, which I liked and is good if you are wanting to stay for a longer period while you are settling in for a working holiday. It has one dorm room which is well designed so that you feel like you are in a cross between twin share and dorm. There are seven beds (not stacked bunk beds) divided by walls into groups of two and three. There are three twin share rooms, two bathrooms and three toilets. Everything is thoughtfully designed, exceot they needed a few extra hooks for hanging things in the bathroom but they said they were going to fix that soon. The kitchen is a little small for more then two people cooking. Staff seemed happy to do a bit of laundry for you and kept everything clean. There is a nice big loungeroom the opens in the yard. It was defintiely a great stay and I would recommend it for anyone who wanted backpacker or bed and breakfast type accommodation. One of the nicest places I've every stayed in.

Room Tip: In the dorm room the beds towards the back a less disturbed by people coming and going if an early to bed type.
