“Accommodation far from Town.”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 29 August 2013

I have been here for my holiday on July 2013. The first thing is this one is far away from town. I need to spend $30 for the taxi fees, because I don't have many experience for bus in Christchurch. Second, I am an international traveler so my English is not very good. When the staff talk to me, I can not hear properly after a tired day. But , they did not understand that. They are not friendly to me. Third, the bus is outside the hostel so it is convenient for you to go to Town or Airport. However, the bus timetable is not very flexible. That time, I need to go to the airport at 5:00 in the morning, but they don't have any bus early in the morning. Once again, I need to spend $30 to go to the airport. The good thing of this hotel is the room is big and clean with reasonable price. The hostel also has kitchen for anyone who want to cook. Not highly recommend for anyone who want to live near town and have early flight at the morning but want to save transportation fees.

Thank you very much for leaving us a review. We are glad to read you found the lodge clean and reasonable priced. We are really sorry to hear you found the staff unfriendly however if you had mentioned to the staff you were tired we would of tried to accommodate your needs better as we strive to make our guests feel comfortable and well-cared for when staying with us. Haka Lodge is located in a suburban neighbourhood we have excellent bus services that operate frequently to/from the city and beyond and are on a set timetables which unfortunately do not operate that early in the morning when you required a public bus. Thanks for staying and we would love to see you again. Enjoy the rest of your travels! Kind regards Haka Lodge Team.

After the shock of landing in freezing Christchurch it was lovely to arrive at this cosy little *ahem* hobbit-hole of a hostel. Friendly staff, (hi Kerri-Anne!), squeaky clean bathroom, comfy double room with a tv and a balcony, and a nice warm fire in the lounge - very welcoming, just what I needed. Good value and great service. Not terribly close to the city or airport but certainly easy & cheap to get to from the latter. I only stayed for one night, before starting a Haka small group tour, but would definitely come again.

We really enjoyed our stay here - it provided everything we looked for in the kitchen; more than we expected in the common lounge room (it was winter and there was a wood fire warming the entire space), comfortable beds, and very clean bathrooms.
And it was cheaper than practically everything else we looked at on the net (and we looked a lot because price is also important to us).
Thoroughly recommended.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Haka Lodge in Christchurch. Its set in a 3 story house and has a very welcoming feel. Hostel was very clean, friendly staff, beds were excellent and the common areas were great. Loved the fireplace in the lounge room! I would highly recommend this hostel to anyone passing through Christchurch.

It felt like I was staying with my aunt or something. Our double was perfect, it even had a TV which was a first for us in a hostel. The bed was unbelievable - the bedding was nicer than what I have at home! The shared bathrooms right outside and always cleaned to perfection. The whole place is really small, and so is the kitchen and it did get crowded but mostly because some people were cooking a three course meal. You get a decent amount of free internet when you arrive and the wifi works really well. If we could've stayed there for our whole NZ trip we would've, and I'm pretty hard to please!

I travel a lot for my job, and have stayed in accomodation all over NZ and Australia, all in varying price ranges.

The Haka Lodges are now my preferred locations to stay in Christchurch and Queenstown. It's rare to find a private room for only $75 in either of these cities, with any, let alone all of the following:
a) A decent level of hygene!
b) Fresh, clean linen (that still smelled clean, unlike some questionable motels I've endured over the last six weeks)
c) Staff who love to have a chat, give advice about the area, and will take the time out of their day to seek you out, and see how you're doing.

Haka lodge ticks all of the above boxes, and that's why I'm coming back.

The only thing that irks me slightly is the fact that even with a private room, the "facilities" are shared, but that's just a minor inconvenience, my concern is completely allayed by the fact that I've seen how hard the staff work to maintain the level of cleanliness.

Four and a half stars to Haka Lodges in Christchurch and Queenstown!

While this wasn't a bad spot, there wasn't anything outstanding about it either. The room (we had a double) was adequate, though quite small; the bathrooms were very clean and just across the hall; but the kitchen was tiny, and there was only one picnic-table sized dining table. While it wasn't too much of a problem, it did mean that you essentially had to get in line to make your meal, and you really needed to hurry to eat and clean up so that the next people could make and hurriedly eat their meal. Not very functional. Not sure whether or not this location was very good. We just needed a place to crash before turning in our rental car and getting our campervan. There were quite a few "long-term" renters there - construction workers who are rebuilding Christchurch - so.......................

Thanks for your review. We are a friendly backpackers that accommodates a small amount of guests and are glad you found our bathrooms clean and handy. We have 2 kitchens at our property and because we accommodate just 20 people, normally works really well but appreciate there can be delays if guests do we want to cook at the same time - we are sorry you had to wait. Currently, we have a 3 guests who are staying with us for the rebuild of our city as there is a shortage of accommodation in the city while they find somewhere more permanent to stay. Hope you enjoyed traveling the South Island in your camper van. The Haka Lodge Team
