“good, quiet, clean and friendly homestay”
Reviewed 18 November 2013

Everything you need in a hostel. Clean kitchen, good showers, warm bedding, towels provided, 10 min walk from CBD. Friendly owners live in the same house, so more of a homestay than hostel. Free WiFi voucher too

I was passing through Christchurch on my way back from Lake Tekapo and needed a place to stay just for two nights. The hostel is basically Alan & Keiko's house which they share with backpackers. It was very clean and quiet. I only paid 45 NZD per night. The room I had was very small but the bed was pretty comfortable. It wasn't the prettiest of rooms but what can I expect for only 45NZD? I was out in the city most of the time I was there, so didn't really need a big room anyway. I saw some of the other rooms in the house and they looked quite nice and big.

The kitchen and bathrooms are very clean. They have a lovely garden, which had lots of flowers blooming, so in the summer it would make a lovely area to sit out and enjoy the fine weather. It's about 20 minutes walk to the city centre and 10 minutes walk to the two nearest supermarkets. Location-wise it's good, if you don't mind walking. The American lady who works there was very friendly and helpful. Keiko could do with improving on her hospitality I think. I found her a bit brash and fussy. I would recommend this hostel though.

Room Tip: There is a Speight's Bar and Restaurant next door to this hostel. If you're staying on a Sat...

I stayed in this backpackers for 1 night and on arrival I was greeted by the owner and taken on a tour around the house. It was very comfortable, and I was made to feel right at home. Everything was clean, and the garden was lovely too. The owner was extremely helpful and went out of his way to ensure I was alright. He even gave me some handy tips and brochures for my next location. An enjoyable stay and would highly recommend to anyone looking for somewhere comfortable.

Here, you feel like beeing at home. Alan takes time to explain everything to you : city, surroundings, country and places to stay. He is very nice (he welcomed us warmingly at 7 am when we arrived even if we had awaken him)!
However, don't be in a hurry, he is not very young and need time to arrange things and do them accordingly to his habits.

The location is not the best of you want to stay city centre. About 25 mins walk into town. Although it is handy for the intercity bus stop. Only dealt with Alan and he was very helpful. Stayed here for 1 night and had an early departure the next morning so getting a shower was not a problem. The place itself is a home, and very old fashioned which added to the quirkiness of it. Got a single room and done the job nicely. It was winter so was cold and although I didn't think much of the heater in the room the bed was very well insulated with plenty of covers. This is not a hostel to meet and party with others. It's regimented but offers a good place for a quiet night's sleep.

My partner and I stayed here for a couple of nights in Dec 2012. The location is good and is only a 20-30 minute walk to the red zone. The first thing we noticed though was that the place smelt like an old people's home, it needs all the doors and windows opening, curtains drawing and a good airing...

Alan wasn't particularly welcoming and seemed to leave all the work (except watering plants) to Keiko; who is the best bit if our stay and was very informative about the area. Alan even closed the TV lounge to us at 9pm one night as he wanted to watch something alone.

It's not the worst place we've stayed in, but there must be better hostel type accommodation in Christchurch.

Where to begin, It was the final few days of an amazing trip but this place left me wishing I never went near the South Island!!!
I felt like I was staying in somebody's home who didn't want me to be there. The Owners are really blunt and rude.
You cant shower between certain times, you cant cook at certain times, you cant use certain Kitchen Utensils, You cant talk in the kitchen past 10pm or face the fury!!!
It was winter and the heating was never on in the bedrooms (bring your thermals)
To be honest it was just the worst thing ever, horrible way to finish a holiday. But I can at least try to reach out to others, DON'T DO IT!!!! I implore you go to a proper hostel where you feel welcome it makes all the difference!!

Room Tip: Prisoners would prefer a cell!!!
