“Much better than expected”
Reviewed 14 March 2012

Travel agent booked this hotel for me and family. Slightly apprehensive as reviews on trip advisor are very mixed, but pleasantly surprised. Rooms we stayed were good sized and clean, decent furnishings and comfortable - exactly what would expect at this star rating and price. I suspect we got the more recently renovated wing of the hotel. Grounds of hotel are lovely, with lots of free parking. Earthquake damage is very minimal and hardly noticed. Convenient location for town and airport, with 2 minute drive to supermarket and restaurants. Walking distance to beautiful parks. Staff were helpful. Decent breakfast with good choice of hot and cold. Christchurch is much smaller than I expected, and feels very quiet - probably a hangover from the earthquake. Given city centre options are shut down, I would certainly recommend this place.

Although this hotel is looking a bit dated the gardens are so beautiful - lovely to sit in the restaurant for breakfast looking out.
The staff are so wonderful here - very genuinely friendly.
Very cheap car hire too - saves you going out to the airport to get one!!
Not hugely central, but with everything thats gone on in CHCH maybe that doesn't matter.
I would stay here again.

Christchurch was our last stop off prior to flying back to the UK and as we got nearer and nearer we became more and more anxious about our stay here. Various people along the way talked of the earthquake and the effects it had had on the people. We nearly changed our itinary as a result but are so glad we didn't. The Chateau on the Park gave us a warm welcome and we enjoyed our stay enormously. The room was good. There was a bath as well as shower in the bathroom - always nice to have the choice. There was a good choice at breakfast with a choice of prices, a free shuttle bus into town if required and helpful information on where to eat if we didn't want to eat in the hotel. But the best thing of all was the amazing golf deal. Our flight was late on the day that we were checking out and we were wondering how to fill the time. After reading the information in the hotel we noticed the golf deal offered by the hotel. 10 dollars (just £5) bought us a round of golf in addition to golf club and trolley hire in the park right opposite the hotel. Amazing. The hotel even gave us 4 golf balls and a selection of tees. We checked out leaving our cases to be looked after by the hotel while we very happily used the day playing golf before driving to the airport. All in all a fantastic end to a great holiday.

My wife and I spent two nights here at the end of a three week tour of NZ. We came on a package and didn't pay for individual hotels so we can't comment on value.

We enjoyed our stay at the Chateau on the Park.

It was easy to find opposite a large park. There was plenty of parking although the entrance from the road into the hotel is a little tight.

On the entrance there is a certificate saying the premises have been checked and are safe. Yes, there's evidence of some earthquake damage but nothing horrendous. There's also notices about refurbishment work that's about to start.

The reception and other staff were very friendly, welcoming and helpful. Our room was to the rear of the hotel on the second floor. For some reason we received complementary bubbly and chocolates - nice touch.

Our room was very pleasant. Clean, spacious with a nice bathroom - bath and separate shower. There's a fridge but no mimi bar. Pleased to have free unlimited wifi in the room.

Bed was comfy and we slept well.

We ate in the restaurant both evenings - nice tasty, food both nights, although I had to ask for a sharper knife to cut my beef. Breakfast buffet was good too. I would not describe the food as 5* or cordon bleu but it's good, tasty with good mix of light bites and fuller meals with pleasant and friendly waiting staff.

Not perfect but absolutely fine. Nothing particularly out of the ordinary but a good service provided well (something too many hotels fail to provide).

This hotel isn't close to the centre of Christchurch, so it's away from where the main earthquake damage hit, but there are still a few signs of damage (scaffolding poles and safety notices). Compared to the rest of the city, though, it's held out well - apparently most of the hotels have had to be closed due to earthquake damage. The park close by is lovely, and there are a few nice restaurants within walking distance.
Our arrival didn't give us the best impression of the hotel - reception staff refused to help our tour guide hand out keys and point us to our rooms, even though there were no other customers waiting to be served.
Our room was lovely though, very spacious and nicely decorated.
The bar was very quaint and had a nice traditional atmosphere. Service was a little slow, but the bartender was very friendly and helpful.
Breakfast wasn't great compared to many other (cheaper) hotels we stayed at in New Zealand, but it was OK and there was an average range of choice.

Considering what Christchurch has been through and the scaffolding to hold up bits of the hotel and the ponds empty and sad looking it is still a pleasant enough hotel to spend a night in. The gardens and good breakfast make you soon forget the bad bits. Breakfast staff were lovely but not so the lady who ran the dining room at night. They were busy but she was rude and it wasn't our fault. We found a nice place to eat around the corner.

Although they try to hide the fact that the roof is supported by scaffolding(through no fault of their own), it is a bit daunting to see this as you walk into reception. Staff were very helpful, and even though they have free wifi in the lobby, it appeared to be at dial up speed. This probably has been a very nice hote and it was handy that they offered a free shuttle bus to the franz josef train
