We stayed here one night before heading to the airport early. I thought it was closer to the town. There is a nice botanic gardens within walking distance. You can take a bus to get to town center. It's about 2-1/2 miles from the canter berry museum. The hotel had a/c tv iron, fridge, coffee pot hairdryer, heated drying rack for towels. There is a nice place to eat 2 blocks away next to a convenience store running bull had lovely salad and pizza, burgers. We used super shuttle to get to the airport. The front desk made the booking.

Nice place in riccarton.. The hotel provides free shuttle to city centre during the day and even to the railway station if anyone is caching the transalpine train.

The facility at the hotel is good.. Though we hardly use any off them,..

Firstly, I want to dispel the fallacies and myths in regards to this hotel.

The internet is fast. In fact, it's the best deal yet...4 hours free and wifi in the rooms!!
The hotel is NOT badly damaged and broken, it's great and the construction is mostly done.
The rooms do have flat screen TVs...and YES...they DO work!

The restaurant is AWESOME. The chef is a diamond in the rough that deserves to be recognized. Marylyn at the front desk is very professional, courteous and great at what she does.

The hotel has chosen to go with a renaissance decor accented with medieval times style pieces in the lobby such as a knight in armour etc. The rooms are very simple yet, tasteful. Green carpets, thick brown mosaic pattern curtains and a nice flat panel TV.

The bathroom is a blast from the past with it's pastel pink / beige amenities, but clean, convenient and accessible none the less. It's obvious major renovations have taken place.

The beds are comfortable and the pillows don't stink (pet peeve of mine). The wooden side tables and head board along with desk and dresser add age and character to the room.

The gardens in the resort easily out perform the botanical gardens. In fact, the grounds manager should offer some classes to the Botanical Gardens of Christchurch on how to maintain a garden! Excellent grounds keeping.

The rooms have heat and AC. Elevators make it easy to get to the 3rd floor.

Room Tip: ask to be in a premium deluxe room on the 3rd floor. A room facing the restaurant/gardens is most q...

My husband and I stayed here for a few days during a trip to New Zealand. The location is good, with a lovely 20 minute walk into the city through the park and botanic gardens. The decor is a bit outdated but the rooms are very comfortable. The hotel suffered extensive earthquake damage but the ongoing repairs didn't affect our stay. The service in the hotel was excellent and the food in the restaurant was terrific and great value.

It is indeed a charming hotel from the outside, but once inside, there are a lot of problems visible to everyone. I get it that the earthquakes did damage a massive part of the hotel, but I can imagine that the hotel already looked that old and out-dated before 2010.
The room was spacious, but the decoration was done by someone with very poor taste and aesthetic feeling. I've been in motels that had better decoration. In general I wouldn’t point this out as I really don't care, but there's such hype around this place and the prices are so inflated that one expects something else. There were loose wood parts of furniture hanging around on my room – they were put by someone next to my working desk (they were maybe 2 m length x 30 cm width). I was definitely surprised with this lack of order and of care towards the guests. The bathroom had a very good size.
They delivered new sheets and towels ever day at my door because I had the “don't disturb” sign on it. I told the front desk that they didn't have to do this, but they still kept on doing it – fine, doesn’t annoy me.
The internet reminded me of my 56 Kb modem sagas. Honestly, it was as almost not having internet at all. Navigating per se was awful, and trying to connect to my company’s VPN network was a nightmare, and we have a very very fast server in Christchurch to which I could connect to – no deal, nevertheless.
You have plenty of space to park and the breakfast was very good. The food quality was very decent and the choice was also very acceptable. The personnel was nice, but nothing worth pointing out as exceptional. The location of the hotel is ok, but if there was a city centre, you wouldn’t be able to walk there in a small stretch. There's a big garden park in front of the hotel, and that’s nice for those wanting to do some sports. There's also a street full of cheap and low class restaurants and mall on the vicinity of the hotel.
Overall, the hotel is ok, but only if I were asked 75 USD/night –alright, maybe more taking into account the great quality of the breakfast. For the price I paid, amenities I got and miserable internet connection speed, I won’t be staying there again.

The hotel is in a good location opposite the park and Botantical Gardens and approx 20 mins walk from central Christchurch.
Unfortunately our first impression of the hotel wasn't great as we arrived during the hotel being evacuated following a fire alarm - the staff on duty appeared disorganised and it wasn't obvious who was taking charge of the situation (slightly worrying ! ) and when we were finally given the all clear the receptionist on duty didn't inspire much confidence.
Our room whilst 'tired' and in part of the hotel which hadn't seen any recent refurbishment, was however spacious, clean and comfortable.
The 'jewel in the crown' of this hotel is the excellent restaurant - one of the best meals during our 3 week tour of New Zealand, mateched by extremely efficient and pleasant service.
Check-out was a much better experience than check-in with the duty reception staff displaying excellent customer service skills

Lovely gardens make this otherwise ordinary hotel special. The rooms surround a fabulous garden setting in which the reception, restaurant and conference facilities nestle. Inside, the property is much more inviting than the exterior would suggest. Although a rather peculiar architectural style with lots of heavy beams, dark timber and tiled floors it is generally a comfortable place. The gardens create a feeling of space and style that it is rare to find in the middle of a city. Some minor earthquake repair and renovation is underway at the moment but this is fairly unobtrusive.

Rooms are typical and reasonably well equipped. Unfortunately my bed was made up of two singles pushed together with apparently no mattress cover so the join was very obvious and rather uncomfortable. Other than that I had no complaint - all very clean, normal amount of space, plenty of hot water and very quiet (it was a Sunday). Lovely view of the gardens.

The restaurant evening meal was very good, meeting room lunch good, but breakfast average. Service was excellent and all staff seemed to be genuinely friendly and attentive. Free wifi was welcome.
