“Chateau on the Park Christchurch”
Reviewed 16 March 2013

I stayed for 4 nights at the Chateau on the Park and thoroughly enjoyed my time there. The staff are wonderfully friendly and helpful- nothing was too much trouble for them whether arranging car hire, printing boarding passes, chasing up phone numbers, arranging transfers- it was all done with a smile. They went beyond expectation in their willingness to be helpful. Free internet was a bonus. The grounds and gardens are superbe. I didn't have breakfast so can't comment on that but the restaurant meals in the evening were outstanding. I would highly recommend this hotel to anyone coming to Christchurch: it was a very enjoyable stay!

Like a lot of Christchurch, this hotel is being rebuilt. It wasn't devastated by the earthquake, but did suffer some damage. It's in a very nice location, across the big park from the city centre. There is lots of free parking. The staff were friendly on reception. There is free wifi, which is a great plus. The bed was OK, but it was sheets and blankets, rather than a duvet, which I found rather old fashioned. The bathroom was a little dated, but very clean. There is a free shuttle to the railway station and town, which is useful, Overall, a good choice for Christchurch, which - despite the terrible quake - remains a good city to visit

Stayed here for 3 nights after a restless night in a recommended motel. Although the hotel was busy, the staff were particularly friendly. The hotel is set in a beautiful garden. I had a room opposite the pool on the 3rd floor and it was quiet. Unfortunately the bed was uncomfortable with a ridge in the middle. It was a very basic mattress. The breakfast was excellent with plenty to choose from. One can sit in the garden and enjoy the roses. The restaurant food was also good. The location of the hotel is very good right near Hagley Park, downtown, the museum, the cathedral and the River Avon. There are many restaurants in the area to choose from and if you feel like going on a spending spree Ricarton Mall is nearby.

Room Tip: A room opposite the pool is quieter.

This hotel was one of the best I stayed in . Staff were obliging and put themselves out. Room was fine and clean and comfortable. I arrived from Brisbane after midnight having had nothing to eat and they gave me delicious homemade soup. OK so there has been some earthquake damage but they are dealing with that and I ignored it. The garden is delightful and one looks out on it at breakfast. It is quite a long way into the town but I walked through the botanical gardens and got there and to the museum. Needed a taxi back. But they have a hotel small coach which really made life simple when I had to get to the train station at 07.30 for an 8 o'clock train with my heavy baggage. And I was helped with that. Dinner at night was very good , likewise breakfast. I would certainly stay there again.

The room was a good size and clean, and the hotel is located in a quiet location. However it is a 20-30 minute walk from the hotel to the centre of town, and there is not much else in the vicinity as it is located in a suburban area.

The hotel is dated and could do with a change of carpet or something to get rid of the musty smell. The garden is lovely. We didn't try the bar/restaurant.

This hotel is ok for a night or two and if you have a car. Next time I would stay somewhere else.

We needed a base for the last 3 nights of our New Zealand trip and chose the Chateau on the Park thinking it like city centre hotels but we were wrong - it was so much better! Some tripadvisor reviews suggest it is faded and needing a makeover but not so.

The setting is lovely, a 20 minute stroll across Hagley Park and the Botanical Gardens from the Museum (which is the hub for the various tours and attractions and adjacent to the iSite information centre). The hotel itself has beautiful gardens and a tranquil feel to it. One area of the hotel is being refurbished but there was little noise and nothing that intruded on our stay. As we arrived the small outdoor pool had just been re-opened and we spent our last day sunning ourselves by it, which was a very relaxing way to end our trip.
Whilst we were there, there was a conference and celebration dinners, none of which intruded or detracted fro the great service.
The rooms were well equipped and spacious, with a good bath and shower in ours.
Perhaps the biggest surprise was how good the restaurant was. We planned to eat out but one of the two local places had poor reviews and we didn’t fancy gong back into the town centre, so we ate in the restaurant all three nights (rare for us). Not only were the prices (including wine) very good but he quality and presentation of the food was excellent - I particularly recommend the Fillet Steak and scallops.

Nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff and we would recommend a stay here very highly.

Room Tip: Some rooms have direct access to the quadrangle garden and this makes it quicker to get to the pool.

We loved this hotel as it is just next to the park, has great sized rooms, friendly staff and good restaurant for breakfast. Great place to get over jet lag and walk into Christchurch from. It also has a swimming pool, but this is tiny so not great for families. The omlettes at breakfast were delicious.

Room Tip: We had a balcony room looking over the gardens which was lovely
