“Very good facility, spoilt by staff stupidity.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 10 May 2014

The room and facilities were excellent, and I have reviewed the restaurant separately. We stayed two nights, a gift from our visiting Scottish friends.
However, on the Saturday morning after breakfast we were preparing to leave for some sightseeing when the fire alarms went off and we had to evacuate the buildings. Unfortunately we had left our room key and my wife's handbag in the room in our haste. Luckily the weather was clement, and all guests had to assemble outside at the front door. There was a fire board visible outside which said that the "fire" was in the reception area and that the fire brigade had NOT been informed. The receptionist on duty stayed at her post at the desk (although there was no sign of any fire and guests were barred from entry), and maintained that the brigade was on its way. The alarm message played on, and on...... After half an hour it was obvious that the brigade had not been summoned as the station was less than 10 minutes away. At this point the story changed to "The manager has been informed and is coming in, also the fire alarm service service agents" as well as the Brigade. Just before 10am the alarm was suddenly silenced, after about 45 minutes of standing outside and we were allowed back in.
We felt very sorry for an elderly Aussie couple who had arrived in the early hours of the morning and had a rude awakening when the alarms went off. They went to the dining room when we were allowed back in, and were told that breakfast finished at 10!!!

We stayed two nights whilst visiting an elderly relative in Christchurch. This was our first visit since the earthquakes and whilst there are obviously still significant issues in Christchurch we were overwhelmed by the positive spirit of the Cantabrians we met. Despite all the traumas and disruptions of the repairs, the staff at Chateau on the Park were awesome. Their attention to excellent service and focus on guest needs, coupled with a warmth and smile was uplifting. The hotel still has some issues but after a major disaster what can one expect. The room whilst a little dated was spotless and the water pressure amazing making it one of the best showers we have experienced. Will certainly return when next visiting Christchurch.

The minute the taxi drove me up to this hotel, I was immediately impressed by the outside appearance. I then went inside and was astonished at the decor. I felt as if I were in a castle and I crossed the moat to get to the reception area. I then met Melva who was so fantastic and helpful. I received my room which was a basic room, however, this place was immaculate! This place had a wonderful breakfast buffet, a beautiful courtyard garden, the location is adjacent to Hagley Park, a 10 minute walk to downtown, and of course we cannot forget Gary the cat that wonders the premises. I loved this place so much that I came back here for two nights after my journey around New Zealand. I also went to the top 5 star hotel in Christchurch, The George, to do a little comparison. I was not impressed by The George and was happy that I chose Chateau on the Park for my stay. Please give my best to Melva, Victoria, and Gary when you stay at the Chateau on the Park.

Room Tip: I had room 320 which was an upgrade from when I was there the first time.

A lovely stay, friendly staff, quiet well appointed rooms. The gardens were lovely. Great breakfast and friendly service. Do visit a red zone in town to understand the devastation on the people, unimaginable for an outsider.

We arrived in bright sunshine, (our first stop in South Island) and thought the gardens, flowers and birds were a delight. Unfortunately the weather was about to change so no chance to use the swimming pool. After using the guest laundry (2$ each for wash and dry) we had a welcome coffee in the Brasserie restaurant where we also eat in the evenings. We booked a table on each occasion as advised, which was just as well as the restaurant was full and some guests were turned away. Breakfasts were also enjoyable with plenty of choice. The staff were all friendly, plus we liked the location - a fairly easy stroll into town. Nothing could have prepared us for the sheer devastation of the town. So sad; these people have to rebuild their lives with their town centre based in containers and still some 50 buildings to be demolished because they are unsafe. We enjoyed our stay at this location, our room was comfortable, clean and adequate with a decent bathroom. The only downside was our room had a locked interconnecting door with the next room and we could hear their voices, but it didn't really detract from our experience.

This is a beautiful hotel, with a medieval theme but not at all tacky. It was very quiet despite being on a busy main road. The reception area is very nice and staff very friendly. The layout of the hotel is lovely with pools, plants, gardens and small fountains. We had a lovely ground floor room, with good lighting. The bed wasn't very comfortable as it sagged in the middle but that was the only problem. There was plenty of room with desk space, chairs, fridge, kettle etc. The bathroom was nice with a separate bath and shower. The toiletries were lovely.

Wifi was free to use and easy to access but a little slow at times.

We ate in the Brasserie restaurant. Service was OK and polite but but not as friendly as in the rest of NZ. However the food was excellent and of a high quality. Breakfast was good, we had the à la carte option as it was freshly cooked and cheaper than the buffet.

They say you can judge a good hotel by the number of buckets that they deploy to catch the rain leaking thorough the roof whenever it rains. On that basis this must be 5 star hotel. On our arrival it was raining hard and had been for most of the day. We were glad to get inside in the dry having driven for 5 hours. We were met by buckets and towels on the floor everywhere. Now I know that Christchurch was ubject to 2 large earthquakes but that was 2 years ago so there really is no excuse for having so many leaks. One room, adjacent to the bar, smelt musty and no one used it. The bar had several buckets on the floor and I noticed that the front panel (wood) of the bar was rotting and that the carpet was mouldy. There were buckets on the floor in the restaurant and we noticed that one was very close to a table laid for two people. Just before the table was used the buckets disappeared!!!

During the evening the bar resembled a waiting room in the local probation office and it was not a nice place to be.

The food in the restaurant was okay but the service left a little to be desired.

The corridors and stairs needed a good clean and we kept our eye on one piece of litter on the stairs to see if it was removed during our stay. To our surprise it was taken away after 2 days!

The electrical equipment in the rooms should have been subject to annual inspection and had labels on indicating when this was last done; they were 6 months overdue.

This was the last hotel we stayed at during our delightful 4 week tour of NZ and we were glad to leave. It was certainly the worst place we stayed at during our trip and we would not be in any hurry to return.

Unfortunately, your stay with us coinsided with our roof repairs and regrettably they were not complete through no fault of the hotel's when we experienced heavy rain. However I am delighted to announce that we have now completed those repairs.
Our bar is very popular with locals and hotel guests and I am sorry that you felt that the other guests did not meet your standards.
I am incredibly disappointed to hear your feedback regarding our cleaning levels and I can assure this is certainly not our usual standard. Both our Executive Housekeeper and Maintenance Manager have been advised of your comments are our currently addressed these issues with their teams.
Kind regards
