Easy to get to from Christchurch airport. Quiet location with impressive gardens. Fairly standard hotel but the décor in our room was tired and dated. Very comfortable bed though. We made the wrong decision to have the continental breakfast – it was expensive and there wasn’t much choice. Highlight of the visit was meeting Gary the resident cat who uses the lift to get around.

This is an older hotel but it is an interesting building, set in beautiful gardens. Many of the rooms open onto the gardens. My son and husband enjoyed the pool and spa and I went for a walk in the park opposite the hotel.
Breakfast was included in our package and was another highlight.
The hotel had little extras like bikes for a low rental.

Central to Hagley Park and easy access to the airport. Nice grounds although some friends found the fountain which the building is built around rather depressing on a rainy day. Breakfast OK. The same lumps of flaked paintwork were on the corridor and stair carpet after 3 days, they were just ground up more and more each day as folk walked over them.
Room jaded and in need of TLC. Filthy windows and curtains and view was to guttering on another part of the building which was full of leaves from the autumn, 8 months earlier. Only one seat in bedroom and standards varied from room to rrom that I saw. However, great bed linen and "freebies" in the bathroom. Internet was charged for.

Stayed 2 nights at start and again at end of group tour of South Island. Hotel is 20 mins walk across Hagley Park to city centre. Spacious, well equipped room; bathroom with tub; decent, reasonable restaurant. Public areas a bit of a maze and rather dated, but beautiful gardens. In summary: a decent place to stay for a good night’s sleep.

The hotel is quietly situated in a residential area 30 minutes walk to Christchurch centre.
The grounds and gardens are well stocked and looked after.
However the same effort shown with the gardens cannot be said about the interior of this hotel, I had to ask for a change of room, the original I was allocated smelled of stale tobacco, had dark oppressive scratched furniture, it was gloomy, tired and dated.
It was also near the guest laundry on the ground floor.
The receptionist grudgingly located a different room upstairs, although slightly better it appears most rooms have dated carpets, decor and fittings, the replacement room had furniture you would expect to see in a student house and an old cathode ray tube television, the bathroom too was old and dated.
Some of the upper rooms have (extremly dirty) patio doors on to a balcony, but there is no balcony furniture. The outside swimming pool was out of use.
The restaurant for buffet breakfast was nice, with a good selection, the tea and coffee is also brought to you by a server and poured out, much nicer than messing around with dried up stringy tea bags which appear to be the norm in other hotels.
The hotel reminded me of a house you might view to buy where the owners spend their time looking after the garden but completly ignore the interior which becomes a time warp.
The hotel has great potential but the rooms desperatly need updating and renovating, I think a hot tub and fitness centre for guests would be a good modern addition, especially as the hotel is away from the city centre.

This hotel was very well placed for the holiday start (1 night) and end (2 nights) of our time in the south island as it is an easy 10 minute drive Christchurch Airport. You can walk into the city centre (about 30 mins), but the hotel runs a free shuttle until about 7.45 pm.

Our rooms looked inwards, so there was no traffic noise – they were comfortable, but it was worth paying for an upgrade for our last nights as the standard room (first night) we had got little daylight and was more cramped. Room service was somewhat haphazard though – the porter was doubling as shuttle driver.

The grounds are attractive and there is a reasonable sized outdoor pool (several using it, though we didn’t). The main restaurant is good for breakfast (good buffet selection and service) but lacks atmosphere for dining in the evening. The bar, where we ate on our last night as there was heavy rain, had more atmosphere and good value meals – either from the bar or restaurant menu.
