We spent one night there. The room was well sized with a small kitchinette. The bathroom was very small as well and a little outdated. Apart from that, the bed, tv and furniture was brand new and very good. As it was our last night in New Zealand, we were really tired. Because of that we decided to have dinner in the room and watch a dvd after it. We had all we needed to do that.
People in the front desk was very helpful, as in every place we visited in NZ.

The room is small. The bed in the living room is the only other bed available. It takes up most of the living area. Bathroom very small. Kitchen small. But they did let us check in even after midnight. No free wifi. It is right on the park so that was the good part.

Hosts garaged motorcycle while on an overnight trip on the TransAlpine train to Greymouth - and included drop-off and pick-up from the Railway Station. Excellent service and the motel is in a good location - close to the City but also close to the station.

Great central location, close to Riccarton Road eating and shopping. The place looks a bit old but clean and tidy with a nice welcome. Unfortunately the Friday night hoons 'cruising' for several hours late at night made this stay unpleasant.

Room Tip: Downstairs would be bets and as far away from the road as possible.

(Note, I stayed with Julia H. during our December 2012 vacation, see pictures of our room -- #6, second floor, closest to Deans Avenue. Our room has the two queen beds, dark brown leather couches, etc.)

The hotel is very close to a bus stop on the #3 route to/from the airport. It cost us $14 or $15 for a round trip ticket for the trip from the airport and back. You can get off right before the intersection of Riccarton Road and Deans Avenue. We made the mistake of getting off at the nearest major timepoint (the Westfield mall on Riccarton) and walked the mile to the hotel and got soaked. Oops!

We arrived in the middle of an enormous rain storm, and Bruce (the owner) was there to check us in and get us settled. We got #6 on the top floor, he noticed the rain was blowing in sideways (sigh, lol, more rain) and getting under the door sill, and cleaned the door sill for us. Bruce also brought us a complimentary basket of snacks, tea, hot chocolate, maps, and brochures to get us started. He even asked if we wanted any milk!

* Pro tip -- ask for a complimentary shuttle pickup if you're taking the TranzAlpine train trip. It's not a bad walk, but if you don't know where you're going, it's much easier and faster to take the free shuttle in the morning and walk back in the evening. (Can't recommend the train enough! It's awesome.)

Our room had a main room with kitchen and adjacent bathroom, and then a separate bedroom. The main room and the separate bedroom both had queen beds with electric heating blankets as well as quilts and duvets. Both rooms also had separate televisions with cable TV. There's a small wall-mounted heater in the main room. All windows were floor to ceiling (quite nice!) with curtains and sheers, so you can choose how much privacy/light you want. The windows also slant out if you want fresh air. The windows and curtains seemed brand new.

The kitchen had an oven, gas stovetop, microwave, and mini-fridge. Pots, pans, dishes, cooking utensils, an electric hot water pot, silverware -- all included and more. You could definitely cook a meal and be set. There was even a cordless phone, it felt like being in a real home!

The toilet was separate from the shower/sink area. The shower fixtures seemed brand new, and the water pressure was good and the water heated up quickly. A hair dryer was also provided.

I was initially worried that I might be kept awake by road noise because our room was closest to the road. There seemed to always be cars on Deans Avenue, but I slept like a rock (seriously, best sleep I got the entire trip!) and didn't wake up at all. I barely even heard the cars when I was falling asleep. I slept in the separate bedroom closest to the road -- it also had a floor fan, a big closet, and an ironing board and iron.

Our second day when we arrived back at the hotel after the train trip, we were surprised by a BRAND NEW leather couch and chair! The old ones weren't even worn out, they were just outdated in style (but honestly, who cares? the old one was super comfy and clean too). But the leather, soooo comfy and soft and buttery and warm when it was cold outside!

We spoke to the other owner, Bruce's wife, Maggie when we returned -- she was nice too and cheerful! We also found out the hotel had washers and dryers for guest use, but we had already spent a while drying our wet clothes and suitcases in front of the heater. Oops.

The owners seem to be committed to spiffing up the hotel as they go along, I was pretty impressed. Some people may be put off by some of the fixtures or kitchen bits looking old, but they're all perfectly clean and in good working order. You can't honestly expect every hotel in the country to have been built or renovated in the past 5 years! It's more like staying in a sparkling clean rental apartment than a hotel.

* The hotel is across the street from Hagley Park. Go! It's huge and pretty and green.

* There are a few convenience stores on Riccarton Road very close to the hotel if you want snacks.

* If you're looking for a reasonable place for dinner (I swear, it was impossible to find dinners for the $15-20 price range!), consider Nando's (a grilled chicken restaurant) on Riccarton Road next to the railroad tracks. There were also several other restaurants in the same mini mall that looked good, I think sushi and Chinese and Indian.

Thanks Maggie and Bruce! :D

We stayed at this hotel twice while visiting South Island last year. We found the accommodation to be of an excellent standard and the location so close to the park was ideal for us to walk to the museum and see the other sites of the city. The proprietors were fantastic with helpful information and made us feel so welcome. It was really good value too!
