“Old fashioned motel style, but very comfortable”
Reviewed 21 September 2013

While the condition of this motel is quite old fashioned, the units are very spacious, very comfortable and have a full kitchen. There is a separate bedroom with a very comfortable Queen bed and quite a large flat screen TV. There is an even larger flat screen TV in the lounge area, with Sky. The unit has a full kitchen (4-ring stove plus microwave), and a small dining table. The bathroom is small, but functional. It is very good value for money.

Stayed here three times in a three week holiday and was really impressed by the hotel. The hosts, Maggie and Bruce, treated us like family and were very helpful with everything. Unfortunately there was no bath in the family rooms, so be prepared for that if your young ones do not like showers. The location was perfect for our needs, and a walk through the gardens to the Art Centre / CBD / Restart. Took us about 30 minutes to walk it, but can take longer if you are taking in the beauty of the botanic gardens, or have young children unwilling to walk. The kitchen in the room had everything you need to cook your own meals, or if you are wanting a decent meal then there are plenty of restaurants and fast food choices close by. We stayed in the room with a double in the living room and 3 singles in a separate room (Room 8 twice and Room 2), the double bed was very comfortable and we had no complaints from our 4 year old about the single bed. There is Cable TV in the main room with a fair amount of channels, and another TV in the "kids" room. This is just tuned to the free to air programmes but you could easily hook up a dvd or laptop to it.

Wireless internet was available for $10 a day and was better than the previous hotel we had stayed at by a country mile.

Only issue we had was the road noise (Boy racers) but this was only around the weekend, and did not really affect our sleep.

Thanks for the wonderful stays

We stayed at this establishment at the start (arrival) and end (departure) of our South Island trip. This place of accommodation holds an enormous amount of character and was warm and cosy for our first frosty New Zealand winter evening. The hosts were very helpful and also provided a great deal of valuable information. If needed the staff/management are easily contactable via a in-house phone service and also provide speedy internet upon request (there is a small but reasonable fee). While exploring Christchurch my partner and I encountered a few unpleasant people around the red zone. This location is far enough away to escape from the bustling chaos of the "rebuild" that is currently taking place in the city centre. While staying here you could possibly not even realise that Christchurch is undergoing major repairs to reverse the effects of a major earthquake. It is still well within distance of exploring the limited but available tourist destinations left in the area. There is also plenty of nearby food places and other stores if needed all just a five minute walk away.

All in all our experience in Christchurch was saved by the lovely owners at this establishment. If traveling or even stopping by for a night or two, I can assure you that you will be adequately taken care of!

Thankyou from Dan and Stef

Room Tip: Downstairs rooms are great as stairs can be a pain with lots of luggage.

I choose this hotel, cause of its price and its location near from the railway station. Arriving at 6 pm from tranz alpine...we came to the quiet city.. Christchurch...I had read the trip advisor who'd said it's difficult to find taxi or transportation in the station,so I had emailed Argyle on the Park whether they had shuttle to the station. Bruce was very nice person, he said he will pick up us from the station by his private car...
And after waiting till noone at the station cause we arrive earlier... Bruce came and pick up us... very friendly and warm, he welcomed us very well...
The hotel is quite old..with tiny bathroom. We booked for 5 people ..so there were 1 double bed in the living room and 3 single beds in the other room. The location is quite good, just walking to Riccarton road where you can find many restaurants and also mall..quite busy street there...
Thanks to the owner of Argyle..who welcomed us as your family...

Myself and three colleagues recently stayed while attending a conference. We had two units, each with a bedroom and a bed in the lounge. Always lovely and warm despite how cold it was outside! Staff were friendly and helpful. The location was easy to get to and was in walking distance of a variety of restaurants and a local dairy which conveniently sells wine - perfect for the byo Indian we ate at!

Stayed here twice for one night. Easy to find with parking available at hotel and centrally located for walking into the city, about 20 minutes across the park or head the other way and you get to the Westfield shopping mall at Riccarton. Hot tub was not working when we visited which was slightly disappointing, as was the additional charge for wifi access but the rooms were fine and comfortable.

I just popped in while driving by to get a room for the night. The hosts were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. Grounds were very attractive (great for families). The room was very nice, tidy, clean and very comfortable. It certainly had everything I needed. The bed was very comfortable as well. I'll certainly be back the next time.
