Flew into Christchurch and driving to Hokatika next day. Hotel is a bit dated in decor and fittings but everything worked well and it met our expectations. Its location meant our shopping for trip supplies was easy. Closeness to the park allowed for a great walk before having dinner at a near by venue. All in all a goog experience.

Room Tip: Maybe the definition of a suite is a little generous however we slept in the bedroom instead of the...

We were a group of 6 golfers who took 2 rooms. The place is in a great location. We could hear boy racers on the Saturday night so if you were a light sleeper that would likley upset you. The beds were really comfortable. Sure it is dated but it was clean and good value. The shower was not very good at all pressure wise but that was the only real negative. There is a nice cafe aroung the corner and up Riccarton road called Cafe Sismo - the first one you come to after the railway line - on the left hand side. The food was good and the service exceptional.

My family and I stayed here for one night after a late flight into Christchurch. The room was great for us. The service went above and beyond to accommodate our late arrival. The staff made it easy for us to just walk right up to our room without us having to check in. Highly recommend to any traveller.

Good things about Argyle:

- very attractive price;
- convenient location in the center, lots of buses, walkable distance almost anywhere in town, right by Hagley park and Botanic Gardens, infinite number of restaurants around;
- kitchen with fridge and stove, tea kettle, and all the utensils;
- our suite had another room with two single beds in addition to the queen be in the main room;
- a lot of TV channels available;
- a pint of welcome milk upon arrival;
- Bruce, the owner, was helpful, nice, patient and understanding, with great dry sense of humor. He provided tons of useful information for us. When we misunderstood the pick-up time by the free shuttle and missed it, he was nice enough to drive us to the train station so we caught our train on time.

Not so good things about Argyle:

- the place seems old (probably built in the 70s) and needs an upgrade;
- outrageously tiny bathroom and total lack of shelves, for example, there was no room whatsoever to put our toiletries or towels.
- no noise isolation;
- half of the TV channels had poor reception;
- the mattress was way too soft for us, but then it’s a matter of personal preference;
- the maid made the bed and changed towels daily, but did not vacuum the carpet, mop the floor, wash the toilet or wipe the table. Blinds were dusty. During our stay (3 nights) for the two of us we only had one (1) individual size bottle of shampoo; once used up on the first morning, it was never replaced. Trash bin in the bathroom was never emptied. Now, the trash bin in the kitchen WAS emptied. However, we were scolded profoundly by Maggie for placing broken glass in there: the cleaning lady nicked her finger, and “we were lucky, because she could have cut off her hand!” Instead, we were told we should’ve left shards on the counter. We were obviously unaware of this unique Argyle safety rule and were sad to hear we caused maid’s trauma, but shocked by embarrassing and humiliating lecture in the middle of the motel courtyard.

Our first couple of nigths in NZ. Good value for money. Easy parking, everything you need in the apartment. Good, friendly service. Easy to walk to other parts from here. Nice gardens close by.
Just be aware you pay $10pd for wifi, not accumalative hours. even if you use it for a few minutes a day, this is expensive. Also be aware of how expensive taxis are. $41+ from the airport (they don't warn you about the "airport tax")

when we stay here, it feels just like home, very friendly and awesome motel units, they r very clean and tidy and even have sky TV. Its very well situated with being right across from hagley park for a short walk and also very close to restaurants and bars.
I have stayed here many times, while im getting medical treatment in the city and I would highly recommend this place to any traveller.no 1 in my book.
thanks Maggie and Bruce your tops.

Room Tip: try rooms 3,4,5, they would be the quietest ones.no 5 has a kitchen that catches the afternoon sun...

The rooms were perfect for a short stopover to start and end a trip touring the south island.
The owners were very friendly and made sure the rooms were perfectly made up for the guests . equipment in the rooms are just enough for a family and the space was just right for 5 of us .
They have sky TV so the kids were entertained while we rested . We weregiven wifi access Bathroom was a bit cramped but we are on holiday so did not mind the small space .
The park across the road was ideal for unwinding with a walk . Eating was just around the corner and would reccomend the "running bull bar &grill" a 5 minute walk away.
Overall great value for money
