“Convenient, a bit old fashioned....”
Reviewed 1 May 2014

The Heritage, as the name says, seems to be a converted building from another era, feels a bit like a castle at times. We stayed in the 2 bedroom apartment and it was very spacious with both bedrooms on the upper floor type mezzanine overlooking the living room. It does not have a modern feel but then again is not unpleasant.

Not sure if because of the morose general atmosphere of the earthquake smitten city the hotel itself feels a little lifeless.

On the positive side, we got a friendly reception and the hotel is well situated near to Christchurch's own "Central Park" and near some pleasant bars and a very good restaurant just down the road. Personally I was very interested to see this city and did feel lots of sympathy for the unfortunate but hardy citizens of Christchurch.

Dear Martin H,
Thank you for taking the time to place feedback on TripAdvisor subsequent to your recent stay earlier in April. It is pleasing to read positive feedback about the hotel and our team. The Hotel is situated in a beautiful building and as you've correctly noted, it is from another era. The Old Government Building, in which the hotel now operates, celebrated its 100 anniversary mid last year. I was however sorry to read that you didn't like the decor and that it felt lifeless; we have tried to ensure that the decor in our Suites is in keeping with the style and look of the building as a whole, rather than being of a more contemporary look/style. I believe that the feeling of the hotel being quiet and empty is due to the size and quietness of the space available within the building. We do hope to be able to welcome you back to Heritage Christchurch the next time you visit Christchurch.

Kindest regards - Ana

We have only just returned from a 2 night stay in the Heritage Christchurch and it has been a great stay. Great location, beautiful building and fab apartment. As a family of four the Heritage had everything that we needed - Very comfy beds, TV, Ipod docking station, Fridge, dishwasher, cooker, microwave etc. There is also a pool and a spa bath - which we all enjoyed after spending the day walking around Christchurch. I found the staff at the Heritage to be very helpful, polite and friend;y - the receptionist even offering to bring our bags in from our car, to providing directions, umbrellas, to name a few. A really fab stay - would recommend to anyone.

The Heritage Christchurch is located in the City's Central Square, which was sadly devastated by the earthquakes. Now that the City Centre has reopened, the hotel is in a good location, within easy walking distance of shopping facilities and attractions. The hotel occupies a lovely historic building and our suite was beautiful and very comfortable. The room itself was accessed from a grand central staircase - which we chose to use because of its grandeur, even though there was a lift. Inside the suite, we had a spacious lounge, kitchen and dining area on the first level and the bedroom, bathroom and laundry (very useful) were located on the second level. The bedroom had a gallery so that you could look down into the lounge area. Windows were the full height of our suite. Gorgeous place to stay.

Room Tip: All rooms are beautiful.

I stayed at the Heritage Hotel in New Zealand and while the building was beautiful the management lacked in every way in creating a warm and inviting environment. It is one of those places where you feel like it is a privilege to give them your business. There are so many nice places to stay on the South Island. I would avoid all of the Heritage establishments.

Dear Matthew C,
Thank you for your feedback in Trip Advisor. I was disappointed to read your feedback in relation to your stay at Heritage Christchurch during December. I would like to thank you for your positive comments about our beautiful building. I am pleased you enjoyed the way in which we have restored the building itself.

We do appreciate receiving suggestions from guests about how we can improve the overall guest experience. I would like to highlight that we have successfully open Maddison’s restaurant for breakfast and are currently working towards reopening lunch and dinner service; we are positive this will assist in creating a warmer and more welcoming environment.

It is a shame that you didn't ask to talk with me personally while you were here, I would have loved to have taken the opportunity to talk through your concerns and maybe explain, in person, how we’re tracking in terms of your feedback – I apologize that we didn't meet your expectations during your stay.

I would again like to thank you for taking the time to place feedback on your experience at Heritage Christchurch. Kindest regards – Ana.

This hotel is one of the few remaining remnants of the beautiful historic buildings that used to line the streets of Christchurch. Thankfully it was untouched by the earthquakes, due to being 'over-engineered', but is surrounded by partially destroyed or derelict buildings. Across the road is the lovely Christchurch Cathedral, in ruins & the subject of conflict between the Church, insurance companies & local council.
This hotel was a welcome refuge from a city centre that is still like a war zone in appearance.

Room Tip: The suites are fantastic.

Dear exhostieAdelaide,

Thank you for taking the time to submit feedback on TripAdvisor, after your stay earlier this month. It is always satisfying to read such positive comments about our hotel. I agree that the building is amazing and one that we’re very proud of. Heritage Hotel Management opened the Old Government building as a luxury hotel in 1996. In its trading history it has received several accolades for its heritage value.

The Old Government Building is registered as a Category One Building on the Historic Places Trust register and was awarded the Christchurch Heritage Trust Built Heritage Award in 2010 and the New Zealand Seismic Award 2012 in the Canterbury Heritage awards.

As you would have noticed we currently have an ever changing landscape in the CBD, as work continues. 2014 is the year where we will see a strong start to the rebuilding of Christchurch meaning more facilities will be available for our visitors.

Once again thank you for your feedback and look forward to welcome you back should you return to Christchurch in a near future.

Kindest regards – Ana.
