“Rude People, Avoid this hotel”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 31 October 2008

My husband and I booked this hotel for four nights. We wish we had not. First, the room which was an "executive suite" was small, dark and lacked ventilation. Elevators stop at the 11th floor and you need to walk two flights of stairs to reach their "suite level". Internet access costs 39 dollars for "24 hours". They fail to tell you that if you exceed a certain number of megabites, you will be charged per minute. The hotel uses an outsourced internet company, which was extremely unhelpful when we called for assistance. After four days, our internet bill was equivalent to one night's stay.
On our last day we asked for an extended check out and were told we would be charged 25 dollars per hour beyond noon. When I called the manager, he tried to bargain with me for 20 dollars for two hours over. After we agreed upon a no charge, we left the hotel at 12:15 due to harassing phone calls and housekeeping disturbance despite our arrangement with the manager, as well as the "do not disturb" sign hanging from our door knob.
Also, if you are booking this hotel to use their gym; it is dirty, dark, old and smells like socks. The website fails to mention that their gym is in fact in a separate building (you walk outside to get there).
The hotel tried to charge us 17 dollars per day for parking, but when we spoke to someone behind the front desk she said that 30 dollars total for a week is their standard charge for long term stay.
This hotel is a rip off. Its like being in a flea market where you are bartering for your items. This is by no means a luxury hotel. When I spoke with the manager (David) about these problems he responded with "that's how it is in New Zealand". We stayed on in New Zealand and went to better hotels, which clearly did not share in David's philosophy.

This hotel was great . It was right in the centre of the city and was within walking distance of everything .. the decor was nice and the staff were friendly and helpful. I was on a business trip so had very little time for any sight seeing but with everything close by i managed to fit some in . The daily choc mint and the next days weather frecaste left on my bed was a nice touch and my room was cleaned twice daily . i Stayed in the self serviced apartments which were spacious. The views could have been better as my window faced a building next door. The heater was also a bit noisy but all in all i enjoyed my stay with Heritage Hotel.

  • Liked — THe Central Location and great service
  • Disliked — nothing really if i had to pick something it would be the heater was a bit noisey

Location: Located right in the middle of Christchurch the Heritage has a superb location, within walking distance of plenty of restaurants. Christchurch has one of the most complex oneway systems I've come across and I suspect finding the hotel without a satellite navigation system (luckily we had one in our rental car) would be very tough!

Ambience: A bit of a mix really! The outside of the hotel, and sister building next door makes you think it would be old world on the inside but it is anything but! The lobby area was without character, and the hallways outside our room were exceptionally drab! Our room though seemed recently refurbished and was a much more pleasant, although was lacking in character.

Room: We booked a standard room and it was a decent size, particularly the bathroom.

Facilities: We only used the hotel's internet service which had an extremely paltry download limit of around 30MB. Don't have your podcasts set to download automatically or you'll end up paying more for it than the room!

Service: Front desk and concierge were useful in helping to arrange transportation back to the airport and also with dinner recommendations.

Summary: The Heritage was certainly a pleasant hotel, but not luxury as some have hinted at. I found it interesting that the All Blacks were staying here at the same time as us so I'm guessing it is one of the better hotels in the city.

The Heritage would not be the most luxurious five star hotel I have ever stayed at but it probably had the most attentive staff.

We were in the new part of the hotel and had two double beds in a standard room which for me and my three children 22yrs, 20yrs and 16yrs was not exactly ideal (I initially wanted the apartments but they were booked out) but we all found the room spacious and for the three nights we were there it worked well for us. With the money we saved on accommodation, we had some great meals out, Christchurch has some supurb restaurants.

The room was definitely clean, spacious, quiet and great comfortable beds. I went to the gym and it was great, had all I needed, the kids used the pool and spa and enjoyed that. Location was perfect, easy access to great restaurants, shopping and transport, from what I could gather all tours picked up at hotel or close by.

Service was great. I did'nt need to do a thing, they booked all I needed for me and when we had got to the airport and forgotton a bag it was no trouble to put it in a taxi and send it to us in no time. On another occasion it appeared all buses to Mt Hutt were booked up, our concerige spent two hours phoning around ensuring we got on a bus the next morning.

Another occasion, it was late and we realised we had'nt packed toothpaste, again majically it was found. Just a few of many examples of great customer service.

This was what I needed all those little tasks which make a holiday complete, taken care of for me. Also they recommeded some great restaurants.

The hotel has great ambience in the old section and the newer section perhaps does'nt have the same character but its a comfortable hotel room, we had a standard and had plenty of room.

If I was to return to Christchurch I would definitely stay at the Heritage again.

My husband & I flew to Christchurch (from Sydney) to watch a rugby game. Only went for the weekend but really enjoyed our 2 night stay at the Heritage Hotel.
We booked a 1 bedroom apartment. This was located in a heritage building which has been well fitted out. The suite had a small kitchen & living area downstairs & upstairs the bedroom & bathroom. It was very comfortable & clean & enabled us to do our own breakfast & have space to relax.
The hotel is located right in Cathedral Square in the middle of the city so very convenient.
We booked the hotel through www.wotif.com so thought the price was reasonable.
Would also suggest if you are in Christchurch, take a drive to Akaroa. This is a little town about 1.5 hours drive from Christchurch & definitely worth a visit. Suggest you stay the night there if you have time.

Booked room directly with hotel as offered same price as many of "bargain" websites. Staying one night in Christchurch with two young children so booked two bedroom apartment in old part of hotel. Can't compare to new part as didn't see those rooms. Old buiding very attractive with many old original features retained. Apartment fully self contained and more than adequate. Fully equipped kitchen and two decent sized bedrooms and bathrooms. All at a reasonable price when you compare to many of the soul-less motels. Our room was on the ground floor at the rear which made for a reasonably quiet night but limited view out of the very high windows of a car park entrance. Maybe a first floor apartment may have slightly better outlook. All this suited us as our stay was purely functional and we weren't there for the views. Check in and out was efficient and friendly despite hotel being fully booked and a bit frantic. Pool and gym in basement of old building so handy for us but maybe a hassle for those staying in new part.
Have only one slight negative which is that we had a dirty pillowcase which housekeeping changed instantly but with no apology.
Having stayed in numerous self contained accommodations in Christchurch I can only suggest that this rates as one of the best.

We arrived very travel worn but excited to be in Christchurch and NZ for the first time. The hotel did not disappoint.
The location was very central and opposite the main square where the tourist information centre is located.
The staff were very pleasant and our room was upgraded on arrival to a split level suite, although we did not use the facilities of the kitchen it was there if required. The washing machine/tumble drier was very useful and, after a couple of nights, we set off to explore the South Island with a clean suitcase of clothes.
For 2 weary travellers after many hours at airports and travel this was a very pleasant experience and Christchurch impressed as a very friendly, clean and pretty city.
