“Just an ordinary hotel - missing an opportunity to be great”
Reviewed 16 February 2013

This is a straight forward modern build hotel. We had a "Premium Executive Room Double" which was as good as any Intercontinental and similarly priced. It had a bath which was a big plus. So far so good.

Food in the restaurant (the cheaper of the two) tries to be too pretentious by far [e.g. Cauliflower2 on the menu is intended to convery that the meal is accompanied by a tiny amount of cauiiflower prepared in two ways] but doesnt have the cuisine nor the service to deliver on it. The breakfast buffet was good though but your had to ask for your coffee cup to be refilled.

HOWEVER - my biggest gripe is that you pay for in room internet access. I havent seen that in a quality hotel for a long time. The initial 200Mb is free but only one computer can access it at a time (in our double room). Once you exceed that you are expected pay NZ$10 per 200Mb. Antedeluvian to say the least.

Dear Preposterous,

Thank you for taking the time to post your feedback. We are glad you enjoyed your room.
We will take on board your comments regarding the perception of pretentiousness of our menu and look at this for the future. We will also discuss your comments on service with our breakfast team.

We do understand that complimentary internet is increasingly becoming an expectation for many guests. We are pleased say that we are one of the few hotels in New Zealand offering any form of free internet to all guests with most major hotels charging around $30 per day.
Our average guest uses less than 200MB per day and finds this ample for general email and web-surfing. As time goes on it is likely that we will increase this limit as the data needs of our guests increase.

In the meantime, internet in New Zealand is still a considerable expense and we are charged based on the data we consume. We spend in excess of $30,000 per year to maintain a high quality fibre-optic based system and choose to pass a portion of this cost on to our high volume users. Just a slight correction also, our data packages (after the free data is used) are $10 for 500MB or $15 for 1GB.

Each guest/room should be able to use more than one device at once so we will definitely look into this.

I seldom ever write a bad review, as I would prefer to never go back than to write bad things, however, The George in Christchurch has so much potential and just does not deliver, is it because all the good hotels have been flattened by the earthquakes or remain closed? It is especially tragic as there is such a dire need for Christchurch to have good hotels for business folks and tourists at this point in time.
Here goes, this hotel is a fairly new build so why are the rooms so poorly insulated against noise? and thats a hard one to fix folks, apart from the noise the rooms are great and I mean great, all you could want and more space than you need and I was in room 309. The light switches are just plain stupid but hey every designer wants to be a little out there.
Now the human factor, the restaurant staff all look busy, they rush about to achieve very little, but they clearly have little service skills and miss all sorts of little opportunities that when added together make a ok experience a great experience.
Some of these are simple, drink your own coffee, it's bitter and deliver the food hot not left on the counter till its less than hot!
Now for the management, either get some international experience on how a hotel could be run or actually watch and advise your staff members on how to deliver the very real promise that this hotel has.
Please improve, it's a great location, easy to find, walking distance from the old CBD

We do appreciate getting feedback from our guests, as we are always striving to create the best hotel experience and such feedback helps us see whether we are on the right track. While it is never nice to hear when things have gone wrong, unfortunately they occasionally do. At least when the feedback is given in a courteous and constructive manner however, as it is 99% of the time, we can take it in the manner it is intended and work on improving the situation. We thank the guest for their feedback and work on putting things right in future.

The other 1% of the time when feedback is simply rude, it is admittedly somewhat harder to take on-board. However we filter out the rudeness, look at the underlying issues and continue to work on those, particularly if there is any trend showing.

We will therefore, start with the positive – our great rooms and location, and work on realising our true potential.

Stayed 2 nights in a parkview suite with an exception view over park lands. The room has everything from touch lighting to electric draw curtains. The double shower was beautiful. Close to the city centre and an excellent French restaurant called St Germain A truly excellent experience not to be missed.

This was the second time we have stayed at this hotel. Since our previous visit two years ago we felt that some of the service offered by the staff was perfunctionary. For example at breakfast if you asked for tea you sometimes got a single cup and sometimes a pot. If you had a single cup nobody came to check if you wanted any more. In addition staff seemed reluctant to clear used dishes from tables. The food was however good. In the evening while we were staying the hotel was catering for a large external tourist group which appeared to impact on guests who either wanted drinks or a meal and had to wait. The rooms and beds are still very good and the hotel still provides a guest laundry which is free to use. Very useful if travelling.

Room Tip: On the ground floor ask to be as far away as possible from the reception/bar area

This is the place to stay if you are headed to Christ Church! The city was devastated by an earthquake however it's impossible to destroy the charm of Christ Church and The George. The warm, friendly and extreme professional service at this hotel will capture you. You will not want to stay at any other hotel when you are in town. On arrival from the airport, my husband and I were greeted with smiles. We were also given an automatic upgrade to a Jr. Suite, which was ready for us to check into (even though we arrived early). The exterior is clean & modest however the interior and service is 5 Star! Once we arrived in our room, a member of the staff called to see if we needed anything . A beautiful and serene location across from Hagely Park and walking distance to the Botanical Gardens, restaurants, markets and downtown. The hotel offered free washer & dryers for customer use, wifi was available with some free minutes (dont recall how many) and there were two restaurants in the Hotel. Our dinner at The 50 Bistro Grill, was superb! The room itself was clean, with a view of the park, had ample bathroom toiletries, and a bed so comfortable that I slept like a baby. This is a Hotel that I look forward to returning, the next time we are in Christ Church.

Room Tip: Make sure and ask for a Park-View room.

In a city shattered by an earthquake this was a little gem in a terrific location. Right across from Headley Park. The decor and lobby is inviting. The reception is top notch and professional.
Rooms are clean and well decorated. The best surprise was a self serve free washer/dryer laundry room on each floor. Clean clothes on a long trip!!
Breakfast had a great selection and was delicious.

The wonderful luxury hotel is situated ideally in Christchurch, just within a block or so of great restaurants and close to town. The staff and service here were superb, never had better. They definitely make you feel special and on vacation. The breakfast at the restaurant on site was excellent.
