Stayed twice at The George during our honeymoon to New Zealand's south island. Booked the Premium Executive room and were delighted to be upgraded to the Park View Suite for our first stay. Our suite was large, with a bar/kitchen area, sitting room, walk-in wardrobe as well as a large bedroom. It was well decorated and had all the mod-cons. We particularly liked the fireplace and seating area looking out over the park. Received a nice card with chocolates to welcome us to the hotel. Nice flat screen LCD TVs in both the living room and bedrooms. BOSE sound system in all rooms including the bathroom was a nice touch. The bed was very comfy and overall the room was quiet with no disturbances that we noticed.

Our second stay was in a 'normal' Executive room but it was still a decent size and well appointed with a nice bathroom.

Service at the hotel was good. The welcome drinks sent up to our room were appreciated as was the efficient check in/out. The concierge was helpful in pointing out places to go/eat around Christchurch and responded to all our inquiries quickly and with a smile.

We had dinner and breakfast in their restaurant on the ground floor - food was excellent but a bit slow in arriving. Atmosphere was ok however it was a shame that you couldn't see the park very well as the car park was in the way!

We spent just one night at The George Hotel as a celebration treat. On arrival we were upgraded to a Junior Suite so things were off to a great start! Check in was quick and simple and the desk with chairs to sit at was a nice touch.
Our room was spacious but not huge. Modern decor with all the basics covered. There was local art works on the walls which is something I like to see in hotels.
Five minutes after arriving the concierge rang to check that everything was ok and offered a welcome drink, another nice touch.
Our Suite was on the top floor and had a reasonable outlook, at an angle, across to Hagley Park.
It took us just 5 minutes to walk to the top end of Worcester Blvd which is where the Museum, Gardens and Art Centre are located. Another short stroll and you are in Cathedral Square so the location cannot be faulted.
We had dinner in the fine dining restaurant, Pescatore, and loved it. Excellent food and service even if the ambiance was a little lacking. Certainly one of the best restaurants in town.
Overall this wasn't a 'wow' stay just very nice. The George would most certainly be one of the best hotels in New Zealand (keeping in mind that we really only get as good as 4 star here by international standards) so certainly worth staying at if you want good service and comfortable modern rooms.
One final note - they had decent recycling bins in the room which is a great addition, if only more hotels did this!

We were living in French Polynesia and wanted a break from the warm summer weather so we spent a month in New Zealand. The first place we landed was the George hotel and we liked the clean room and helpful service. It was across from a large park so we went on walks each day but be careful crossing the street.

It's a short walk into town and there are lots of fun restaurants to check out. We went to a handicraft place and found some interesting carved bowls. After a couple of days we picked up our camper van and were off for a trip around the island.

Fabulous boutique hotel in a good location without being in the city centre, just near Hagley Park. Staff service was excellent with particular mention for the concierge who did an outstanding job in the location and return of prescription glasses which had been left in Greymouth. Rooms were of a high standard and very comfortable.
