The museum offered some interesting material, but the layout of the museum was very confusing. A bonus though is that museum entry is upon donation.

Christchurch was being hit hard during the earthquake and most of the sites in town were being destroyed and the government is still working on rebuilding or repairing them, but the Canterbury museum wasn't being affected much and the 3 stories high building is definitely one place to visit during your stay in town. There will be different exhibits depending on the season also. Don't compare this to the auckland museum. It much smaller in scale however you will still get what life was like and the culture history of the natives.

This museum is free (donations welcome). It is just a great place to visit. The lowest floor has a moving photo exhibit of the Christchurch quake aftermath. The geological and anthropological sections are extensive. The recreated old-time Christchurch shopping street is very well done, The children's areas are large and seem to be rich in their offerings, The Paua shell house is simply a fun place to visit. The coffee shop has a great view of the Botanic Gardens. Go visit this treasure - to learn about New Zealand, South Island, and in great detail about Canterbury region.

We went to the Museum midweek and was surprised how busy it was. There is parking beside the gardens, which is a delightful walk. The museum cafe was also busy, toys for the little ones and plenty of food and drink to choose from. Service was good. We spent most of our time at the Discovery room, which charges $2 per person. There are hands on activities for children. Interesting and worth a visit. The rest of the museum is interesting, with plenty to see. Will return.

We really enjoyed this museum. Its well set out and appeals to children and adults. Lots of interactive exhibits andi really enjoyed the old fashioned street recreated with original features. The life size horse and penny farthing, both of which can be ridden by children were great hits with our girls.
