Owner description: The TranzAlpine is a long-distance train between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. Unlike normal passenger trains, the TranzAlpine is designed to provide a window to New Zealand's best scenery, with large reclined seating and huge panoramic windows. The spectacular TranzAlpine journey begins by roaming through the vast farmsteads of the Canterbury Plains to the spectacular gorges and valleys of the Waimakariri River. The TranzAlpine then ascends into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature panoramic windows, reclined seating, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, toilets, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine is operated by The Great Journeys of New Zealand, and runs daily throughout the year.

we took the tranzalphine train from Christchurch to Greymouth.. nice scenery along the way, and we made the most of the viewing carriages.

what can be improved is on the quality of the food and coffee available for purchase at the cafe...

The train itself was fantastic with large windows and the best part was the one open coach for soaking in all of nature's beauty, the fresh mountain air and taking those once-in-a-lifetime photographs while the train itself zigzags its way through the tunnels and the fjords.

We found this really difficult to book on the website via both ipad and android devices, so we ended up driving over. Lots of buttons unresponsive, difficult to progress through screens. It is super expensive and all the discounted rates sell out almost immediately.

The train goes straight through the southern Alps. All the views are beautiful climbing from the plains of Christchurch up to Arthur's Pass and on to Greymouth. The commentary on the train is pretty good.

Our first experience of Kiwi Rail and due to me not requesting assistance for my wife's wheelchair when I originally booked online a minor glich over seat allocation. But straight away the train manager re-jigged our booking and all was well. We were to discover this CAN DO attitude ran throughout the staff we met with Kiwi Rail. We went to Greymouth and back on the same train with an hours lay over before returning to Christchurch. But if you were only travelling in one direction ensure that your seated on the more scenic side of the carriage. In addition the train is not allowed to carry passengers through one of the longest tunnels on the route so everyone is transfered to coaches for a very scenic run to the other side of the tunnel much better than umpteen kilometres of darkness.
