Owner description: The TranzAlpine is a long-distance train between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. Unlike normal passenger trains, the TranzAlpine is designed to provide a window to New Zealand's best scenery, with large reclined seating and huge panoramic windows. The spectacular TranzAlpine journey begins by roaming through the vast farmsteads of the Canterbury Plains to the spectacular gorges and valleys of the Waimakariri River. The TranzAlpine then ascends into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature panoramic windows, reclined seating, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, toilets, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine is operated by The Great Journeys of New Zealand, and runs daily throughout the year.

We took this train ride as it came highly recommended. I really enjoyed the day, turned out to be sunny (which as a desert rat, I long for misty cool days) we were paying to see views. Buying a ticket on-line which guarantees you will buy the expensive ticket, we did get a table, I found a great new book, train was maybe 1/3 filled so my friend and I were able to sit across from each other instead of side by side (thank God). Of course the train food was border line, but it must be a law of the universe somewhere. If you think you might want to go to observation car see if you can get into car next to it as most likely you might want a wee break from standing up. Glad we went...

This train trip takes you through spectacular scenery in an extremely well set up comfortable train with well informed, friendly hosts. Spend some time in the open carriage too.

We took the TranzAlpine Train from Christchurch to Greymouth and it was one of the highlites of our New Zealand trip. Spectacular mountains, gorges and amazing railway bridges. Make sure you catch this train.

Fabulous trip. We did it and stopped overnight in Greymouth. Wouldn't have been as good if done in one day. Scenery is spectacular, commentary is very interesting and engaging. Staff are brilliant, and constantly coming around with rubbish bags and cleaning up. We did it in Winter so wasn't as busy as could be, but still there is plenty of room. Not your average train journey!
Best to take cash for food and drinks. Food was of excellent standard and coffee was brilliant. Would do this trip again. High recommend.

We spent two weeks touring the South Island in a camper van and this transalpine trip was my number one. Awesome awesome awesome views, a great train.....warm, clean, viewing carriage, restaurant buffet carriage with lovely food, yummy cheeses and fab coffees. Staff are very professional and the commentary is a must. We loved this and only went as far as Arthur's Pass, we wish we had taken this all the way to Greymouth. A must do!!!
