Owner description: The TranzAlpine is a long-distance train between Christchurch and Greymouth, from one coast of New Zealand to the other. Unlike normal passenger trains, the TranzAlpine is designed to provide a window to New Zealand's best scenery, with large reclined seating and huge panoramic windows. The spectacular TranzAlpine journey begins by roaming through the vast farmsteads of the Canterbury Plains to the spectacular gorges and valleys of the Waimakariri River. The TranzAlpine then ascends into the majestic Southern Alps to Arthurs Pass National Park, before descending through lush beech forest to the West Coast town of Greymouth - a great base for visits to Punakaiki and the always-popular glaciers. All services feature panoramic windows, reclined seating, GPS triggered at-seat commentary, a fully licensed cafe, toilets, and open air viewing decks. The TranzAlpine is operated by The Great Journeys of New Zealand, and runs daily throughout the year.

We have driven this journey a few times but decided to take the train as was going with quite a few friends and so pleased we did. The train goes places where the car cannot go and the scenery was fantastic. We did find it quite expensive but we can say we have done it now. We stayed overnight in Greymouth but find Greymouth closes when the train leaves to go back to Christchurch. Very worth while doing this train trip

We left Christchurch in bright sunshine and made our way towards the Southern Alps. Super bright carriages, great commentary. The weather closed in as we neared the mountains and we reached Arthur's Pass in mist, sleet & snow. Magnificent!!

Do not miss the opportunity to take this terrific train, well worth every penny.

We took the train from Greymouth to Christchurch. Although the spirits were down due to constant rain but as the journey progressed the scenery and the weather lifted our spirits. Taking us along the myriad landscapes of NZ across the heart of the South Island, this is a spectacular journey. The open coach invited us for taking pics and enjoying the sight and soaking in the fresh air. The staff of the train were very nice and their help made the journey even more pleasant. In NZ this journey is a must as you get to admire nature in its various forms of beauty and learn more about the history of NZ.

The train trip was one of the highlights of my trip to NZ. The scenery is truly stunning and if you are pressed for time you can take the train to Greymouth and back in one day (although I do recommend checking out the west coast if you have time). All of the employees were very friendly and the food and drink options were much better than what we often get in the US on the train. All of that pales though to the incredible scenery. Definitely recommended.

My husband and I caught the train on Saturday 7 June 2014 from Christchurch and returned the same day. The journey to Greymouth was ruined by another group of 4 sitting opposite us. They had their first drink at 11am. They were obnoxious before they started drinking and were more obnoxious afterwards. There wasn't any escape from their loud and crude behaviour. No point in complaining either as NZ rail had sold them the alcohol and there wasn't anywhere else to sit. If you are a group of more than two, make sure to request seats that are not around a table so that you won't have to "share" the journey with others. Better to have a configuration of seats 2x2. Another thing. You can't pre-book seats. You have to send an email requesting seats and they are then allocated the day before. As we were doing the return journey on the same day, we got the better viewing seats on the way home. Had i known this in advance I would have made two bookings rather than one so that we could get good seats both ways.
Apart from our journey to Greymouth, we had a pleasant day. Having said that, I probably wouldn't do the journey again or if I did, I would do it in the middle of winter (snow) or middle of summer.
